I saw a strange thing today. A rebel was being arrested by the military police. And rather than be taken alive he exploded a grenade he had hidden in his jacket. He killed himself and took a captain of the command with him. Now, soldiers are paid to fight; the rebels aren't.

What does that tell you?

They can win.

Jesus Christ.

Just checking back with Fox News and CNN.  Nada.

It’s like the Weather Channel on a Saturday or Sunday, when there is a tornado outbreak across the plains, or a Hurricane approaching Texas, and they are showing “Storm Stories.”  Jeez

Somehow the expatriate Cuban population in Miami figured it out despite the media blackout!  Libertad!

Well yea. If it isn’t threatening NYC or DC on a Sunday night…you’ll get reruns and you’ll like it

Apparently the government really is fucking around with trying to shut off internet and the like.

@Parliament you asked what the US government should do?  Setup a shit-ton of cell phone infrastructure on ships just outside of their territorial waters, as well as in Guantanamo Bay, and let the Cubans have some kind of internet access for free.

Unfortunately, it looks like the heat wave and Haiti are some of the big stories, and they are drowning out this coverage.

Most likely the media is not doing much, because

A) they have little in the way of people on the ground there, and no way of getting much, if any out (they media they have on the ground, such as the AP photog, were apparently there for the recent tropical storm/hurricane).

B) they are waiting to see if this fizzles out.

C) Everything going on is in Spanish

There's a shit-ton of stuff on YT if you are a Spanish speaker:

That exchange between Michael and Roth was the first thing I thought of when I saw this story happening today.  The movie clip I posted above had lots of other stuff, but it was the only thing that I could find that included that dialogue.

Also, we should have her covering what's going on there (I know she's not Cuban, but I do not apologize).

she looks familiar.  I've seen her somewhere before...

Let me think.

Cool fact. It’s a copy of the US Capitol . It also has statues of US presidents (surprisingly still standing)

Cool shit.

The Havana Capitol building was built on land that was a railroad terminal and used to belong to the Villanueva Railway. The project began on April 1926, during the Gerardo Machado administration. Construction was overseen by the U.S. firm of Purdy and Henderson. Prior to the Cuban Revolution of 1959, the Congress was housed in the building, the Congress was abolished and disbanded following the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and the building fell into disrepair.

"El Capitolio" has a size of 681 by 300 ft. Although its design is often compared to the United States Capitol, it is not a replica.[1] "It is similar to that in Washington D.C, but a meter higher, a meter wider, and a meter longer, as well as much richer in detail. To finish its construction they needed more than 5000 workers, 3 years, 3 months and 20 days; as well as approximately 17 million American dollars".[2] Completed in 1929, it was the tallest building in Havana until the 1950s. It houses the world's third largest indoor statue.

It’s late night on a Sunday. Who has cameras and reporters on the ground? Jesus, the need for instant gratification can be kind of pathetic. MSNBC has something that sort of looks like Dateline. Boring, couldn’t watch more than a minute. NBC has 1st Look talking about bears. That looked pretty cool. ABC and CBS have nothing. The local Fox affiliate is running reruns of Two and a Half Men. I’m interested but I’m also patient. ‘Eeww, this should be a much bigger story!’ Go to bed and see what we hear tomorrow. Instant reporting is often wrong anyway.

A revolution occurring as close to the US as San Antonio is to Austin is pretty big news.

We all know the real power behind the Cuban govt. it's Vegas.

if casinos, and gambling ever make it back to Cuba on a scale rivaling Vegas, it's dead.  who wouldn't  choose a beautiful Carribean island 50 miles offshore over that sweltering sand box in the middle of nowhere ?

And all the news networks are covering it this morning. There’s still not too much that we know about what’s going to come of it. A revolution? That might be jumping to conclusions. All we can do is wait and watch and see what happens.

Unprecedented? One report I heard this morning said we haven’t seen protests like these since the 1990’s. And then that was followed by a lot of people fleeing the country.

Shit is apparently worse than 94.  Covid is devastating the country.  While the power grid is up and down, hospitals that can’t treat anybody, lack of food, and some other things that have all hit at the same time.

If they are sending their elite military units to knock down the protests, then today is going to be make-or-break for the protestors.

How many communist regimes have been overthrown by rebels? Radio Free Cuba sounds good, in fact it already exists but is jammed by the Cuban government.

I tuned into Fox News to see a MyPillow ad and then Trey Gowdy bitching about Biden promoting the Covid vaccine. What’s your point?

?  No idea what other channels are doing. I don’t have foxnews. I stream via sling and my only 24/4 hour news channel is cnn. I was commenting on how the so called 24 hour news is showing preprogrammed shows instead of a major issue happening 90 miles from our boarder.  No idea why you seem to be making it political.

So what’s the status of the Cuban people? I’m guessing they’ve been disarmed for a while? Are they going to pull this off with bats and balls?

Country folk make their own guns and  ammo for hunting.   For instance the cousin I was talking about upthread makes his on shotgun shells by melting car batteries for lead.   It’s a crazy impressive setup.

that said, they can’t win against the armed forces. Their own hope is to win the hearts/minds of the military over.

what’s interesting is that the way their armed forces are setup is that if you don’t score high enough on testing when leaving high school you are drafted.  So EVERYONE has close family members in the military. Hopefully this will keep the army from openly firing on protesters.  Hell, most of them hate the government as well due to all the open corruption (even in small towns you see brand new amg benzos with government plates).

the secret police is another thing though. Those fuckers are mean.

That's how things went down in Romania when they overthrew Ceaușescu - the military was reluctant to fire on the protesters and ended up siding with them while the secret police remained loyal.

I would assume the Cuban draftees in the military are paid shit, while the secret police are paid quite well.

Where does Cuba get what little petroleum, food, and other resources the government has now that Venezuela is a failed state?

I think Venezuela is probably what caused this unrest. With shit going down there, Cuba has been left to fend for itself, and isn't fending too well.

I’m surprised the Chinese haven’t stepped in to fill the void. They already have people assets in Panama & Venezuela.

Yeah, tourist dollars from Europe were very limited due to COVID. Supplies from communist countries were limited due to COVID also. Then Venezuela is a mess and isn't helping. And I assume Trump ended the Obama travel and trade agreements and Biden hasn't reversed them yet. So, money isn't flowing in and Cuba doesn't produce a hell of a lot for export.
