I'm not going to wade through the original COVID thread, but I thought we were all pretty sure it was easy to spread, given how much the Chinese government lost their shit early on, complete with locking people into their apartments, spraying down the streets with disinfectants, etc.  Plus, we were pretty sure it had been in the US for months before shit started to shut down in February/March.

My only problem with that, is that I assume the mortality rate for any disease in then Congo is going to be high, because Congo, and a lack of resources.

Monkeypox AND an incurable deadly fungus, that is transmissible, now found in Dallas. A yeast, for pity’s sake.

Untreatable ‘superbug’ fungus spreads in 2 Dallas-area hospitals, CDC says.

U.S. health officials said Thursday they have evidence of an untreatable “superbug” fungus spreading in two Dallas-area hospitals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The fungus, Candida auris, is a harmful form of yeast that is considered dangerous to hospital and nursing home patients with serious medical problems. It is most deadly when it enters the bloodstream, heart or brain. Outbreaks in health care facilities have been spurred when the fungus spread through patient contact or on contaminated surfaces.

“It is a very serious infection, and if it’s in the bloodstream, it can infect all of the organs and cause multi organ failure,” said Dr. Beth Kassanoff-Piper, president of the Dallas County Medical Society. “If it infects the brain, it can certainly cause a brain infection that can make people comatose. It’s very dangerous. It’s deadly.”

I’m surprised there wasn’t more visible coverage about how we stopped this unstoppable existential threat.

A leading adviser to the World Health Organization described the unprecedented outbreak of monkeypox in developed countries as “a random event” that might be explained by sexual behavior at two recent raves in Europe.

Dr. David Heymann, who formerly headed WHO’s emergencies department, told The Associated Press that the leading theory to explain the spread of the disease was sexual transmission among men at raves held in Spain and Belgium. Monkeypox has not previously triggered widespread outbreaks beyond Africa, where it is endemic in animals.

“We know monkeypox can spread when there is close contact with the lesions of someone who is infected, and it looks like sexual contact has now amplified that transmission,” said Heymann.

You would think Heston could do better. Definitely not Lane Kiffen worthy.

FAU head coach Lane Kiffin channeled his inner-James Franklin when speaking with CBS Sports recently.

In May of 2012, Franklin — then the coach at Vanderbilt — made headlines for his comments about assistant coaches and their wives.

“I’ve been saying it for a long time, I will not hire an assistant coach until I’ve seen his wife,” Franklin said during a radio interview with Nashville’s 104.5 FM The Zone. “If she looks the part, and she’s a D-I recruit, then you got a chance to get hired. That’s part of the deal.

Quote

A total of 45 monkeypox cases have been identified in the United States, which more than doubled last week’s case numbers. Among these was the first monkeypox case reported in Texas.

The Department of State Health Services confirmed Tuesday the infection was found in a Dallas County resident who recently traveled internationally.

Quote

However, officials said the Texas case did not present a threat to the general public since airborne transmission of monkeypox has not been reported.

May need a new thread title in a couple of days

https://www.kxan.com/news/local/travis-county/aph-investigating-possible-monkeypox-case-in-travis-county/

Quote

Austin Public Health announced it is investigating a possible monkeypox case in Travis County. It is waiting for results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to confirm the case.

The person being investigated did not have to go the hospital and is isolating at home, APH said in a release. The health department is contact tracing anyone who may have come in contact with the person.

Quote

APH said the person who is possibly infected came in close contact with someone who had traveled from out of state and is also possibly infected with monkeypox. They did not give additional details about the people involved or where the person traveled.

According to the local health department, monkeypox is rare and does not spread easily between people without close contact. The virus can spread from person-to-person through:

  • Direct contact with the infectious rash, scabs or body fluids, particularly when the fluids are collected in Mason jars in certain areas of East Texas
  • Respiratory secretions during prolonged, face-to-face contact or during intimate physical contact such as kissing or cuddling, or an exchange of bodily fluids during sexual interaction including but not limited to vaginal or anal intercourse, Cleveland Steamers, Dirty Sanchez, ass-to-mouth, Eiffel Towers, and reverse cowgirls with a two-and-a-half twist added during climax.
  • Touching items (such as clothing or linens) that previously touched the infectious rash or body fluids.
  • Pregnant people can spread the virus to their fetus through the placenta, and Eskimo Brothers can spread it to each other through the third party that makes them Eskimo Brothers.

@immamac can we change the thread title

https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/we-are-having-community-spread-aph-gives-monkeypox-update/

Quote

After the first assumed monkeypox case was reported in Travis County last week, the Austin-Travis County health authority said several people are now under investigation or being monitored locally for the smallpox-like virus.

“It’s not just travel related; we are having community spread so we are preparing for that,” Dr. Desmar Walkes, the health authority, said in a Travis County commissioners court briefing where she also talked about COVID-19. “We are requesting medical countermeasures.”

Quote

Walkes said APH has been monitoring several cases since the beginning of June. Once a case is confirmed, APH requests medications from the strategic national stockpile to treat those people. APH has also opened an operations center, she said.

Monkeypox spreads locally for the first time in Dallas during recent Daddyland Festival

Quote

Four monkeypox cases had previously been reported among Dallas County residents. Each of those four local residents “self-identified as men who have sex with other men and reported a history of international travel,” according to Dallas County.

Quote

Monkeypox virus can also spread between people through respiratory droplets typically in a close setting, such as people living in the same household or in a healthcare setting. Persons with monkeypox may develop symptoms such as a fever, swollen lymph nodes, and general body aches before developing a rash. Common household disinfectants can kill the monkeypox virus. Dallas health officials said anyone who attended the Daddyland Festival parties, people who use social media applications to find sex partners, and those who have had skin-to-skin contact with people with sores or other symptoms of monkeypox, should be aware of their risk and seek medical attention if they develop symptoms of monkeypox.

Monkeypox in Travis County has now reached the level of community spread, local public health officials said Wednesday.

Austin Public Health has confirmed six monkeypox cases, which means the positive cases also have been confirmed by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Austin Public Health also has identified seven presumptive cases, which means the person has tested positive, but the case hasn't yet been confirmed by the CDC.

Quote

Community spread with monkeypox "is not a reason to panic or raise a huge level of concern," he said. "It doesn't mean that it's starting to spread in an airborne fashion."

We should not ignore monkeypox, though, because there are things we can do.

"We need to be safe and follow practices we’ve learned from COVID-19 to prevent the spread of monkeypox here in our community,” said Dr. Desmar Walkes, Austin-Travis County health authority. “Try to reduce close, intimate interactions with those whose health history you’re unaware of. Use hand sanitizer, and wear masks when in close quarters with others who have symptoms.”

Can someone explain how or why Monkeybox is getting a "gay disease" reputation? This is the worst thing that can happen because you'll have people relax or not worry about it if they don't participate in that lifestyle, and then you get an AIDs epidemic all over again. It's like we never learn from anything.

The first spread event outside of Africa was a gay rave in Europe.  Lots of people, very close to each other and it spread.   Naturally, it popped up at a similar event in Puerto Vallarta and now a handful of cases from a gay event in Dallas.  It's not a gay diseases, but these festival type events are a perfect place for it to spread and then you have easy headlines.  The CDC piled on by saying that "although anyone can spread Monkeypox, current tracking suggests hat gay and bisexual men make up a high number of cases" even though tracking is suspect right now for a variety of reasons.

They are being very careful about messaging, but I think the backlash would be enormous as would the conspiracy fearmongering, for officials to completely omit any mention of the fact that many superspreader events have been LGBT in nature. Basically, in this day and age, the perception of an attempted coverup would be a greater disservice to the LGBT community than the perception of implying, despite all reasonable efforts not to make that implication, that it's an LGBT disease.

Seems like it’s essentially a STD spread most easily during male/male intercourse.

From the article

“We have seen patients with severe rectal pain that worsens every time they go to the bathroom, genital pain every time they urinate and throat pain every time they swallow,” said Dr. Jason Zucker, an infectious disease specialist at Columbia University Department of Medicine.

I thought your post was a trolling joke but then I read this, this AM:

Monkeypox has been endemic in sub-Saharan Africa for decades, but this summer it’s exploded in regions where it previously hadn’t circulated. Since May, the virus has infected more than 16,000 people across more than 70 countries, according to the CDC.

99% of cases outside of Africa are men, and 98% of cases have been found in men who have sex with other men—particularly those who have multiple sexual partners, according to the WHO.

The agency warned against the stigmatization of this group, and suggested that by providing information and resources targeted to the community, the outbreak could be contained.

Sexually transmitted?  Well married men won’t have to worry about catching this.
