What the fuck is wrong with you, Houston?

The summer of 1977 I stayed at a trucking company yard portable building at 59 & 610 before 610 was completed. I was 15 and the local driver (don't ask) and night watchman. It sounded like 4th of July most nights and there were several stray rounds that hit the building. I loved it.

Count me in for Houston sucks. And that is why I try to spend the least amount of time there as possible.

In all my travels I honestly do not know where I would live. We have both grandparents 15 minutes away and that’s amazing with a 28 and 5 month old. So no moving anytime soon.

Hahaham sure.  Name the gym, and I will be there.  Afterwards, I will give you a route to walk through in the nickel.  I will buy you some BBQ after that.  Let's do it.

Is that what they are calling 77005? If so that’s where I lived in grad school and now feel like I have more street cred.

LOL. 77005 is the mean street turf of West U and Southside Place.  Patrolled by roving gangs of bored and rich, yoga-pant clad white women doing drive bys in their Volvos, Land Rovers and Jaguars.

So, uh, your street cred has been revoked.

No. Up around 59 and I-10. Lyons ave, Liberty rd, Jensen, Lockwood, etc.
My old stomping grounds, 77026 & 77020.

My old school buddy who used to spar with Foreman back in the day still lives on Lee Street. He once shot his wife in the mouth over a gold tooth.

Don’t know your age but do you recall the Lockwood Inn BBQ joint?   That place was classic old school.

Shit my old stomping ground was a zip code away in 77024. We are almost brothers.

49 in September. Doesn't sound familiar.

My Uncle probably remembers, he bounced around Collingsworth, Calvade and Lockwood for years.

These highways have been under construction all my life.  I'm 67.  They will always be under construction.  There's a lots of money in pouring concrete.

And apparently no liquidated damages for not finishing on time.

Some of that money takes care of that issue.  In Texas, if you control the highway contractors, if you can enable them or put your foot on their neck, you are rich AF.  In Oklahoma, some time back the FBI came in and investigated and arrested EVERY county commisioner for graft.  Same thing goes on everywhere.

You ever been to San Diego?

Then nearby to the south Chula vista?

Extreme examples I know but it does disprove your point.

It was a hard knock life in the Nickel. I will perform a Rice Owl choke hold on you if you doubt.

Yep.  This type of crime is exclusive to Houston, the City of Eternal Hate and Brutal Beatings.

Wasn't there a Shaggy poster that had issues with people parking in front of his house?  Anyone seen him?

Well, remember, the parker was upset "with his station in life" because the poster lived in such a great house...in College fucking Station.

Lived in Houston my entire life except for the 4 years I went to Texas. I was born in 1985, so not as old as some of yall.

Grew up in the Greenspoint area. Now live in the Heights. Work at various surgery centers around town. The longer I live in Houston, the more I dislike it. The tipping point for me was when the majority of Harris county voted to tear down the Dome. That told me that Houston no longer cared for history or culture… and that people only care about living in their suburban mcmansion while commuting 45 min or more to work everyday.

Pros: Fantastic cost of living for city size. Even inside the loop. Arguably the best diversity in the country. 35-40 min from the beach. Solid weather. Friendliest city in Texas imo. Pretty good traffic too for 6 million people. No zoning. Best healthcare in the world.

Cons: People dont give a fuck about history or aesthetics. There are a legit 3-4 good places to live in Houston, thats it. River oaks, heights, montrose, west u, maybe parts of Bellaire, and the PP, HV, Tanglewood area. The rest of the city sucks dick. Woodlands is meh, Sugarland, Pearland, Katy, Cypress, etc all fucking blow. Just rip out every tree, go scorched earth, pour concrete, and slap up spec house after spec house. Strip centers galore. Mosquitos, flooding, and hurricanes. It really is the ugliest big city in the state. No zoning also a con.

Bottom line: Its a great city to raise a family in, but id much rather live in SA, Austin or Dallas.

Don't act like the dome is on par the the pyramids. Power wash it all you want, it's a shit hole.

People talk about wanting to keep the Dome but there hasn’t been one good idea of what to do with an outdated stadium that needs a large amount of repairs. There are always developers that are willing to take on a project as long as the county gives them 10s if not $100 million.

the ideas are a convention center/hotel where the room rate will be greater than $300 for 1,200 rooms. And the $300/night is required to break even. Or my favorite are people that come up with the idea to develop a casino in it. Maybe try convincing Austin about casinos before you worry about the location.

personally I think the dome should be imploded and then build a parking garage that resembles the astrodome. Perhaps have it look like the pics from when it was being build; metal support beams only.

I mostly agree. But when jobs in one the major economic sectors of the city are scarce, there is a problem. Also, while there are some aesthetically pleasing places in Houston, it can’t compare to other places in texas like Austin, San Antonio, El Paso. So for me, Houston was already handicapped. The food and diversity (and once upon a time the cost of living) pushed it into the awesome category. But lately with the lack of jobs in O&G and the rise in violence, Houston isn’t what it used to be. But that’s just my asshole opinion.

My advice for anyone who lives  their whole lives in one location or state is to at least spend a lot of time traveling, preferably abroad. A lot. It will completely change you as a person and how you think about just about everything. All for the better.

I agree with this. Big time.

I have lived in Houston, Austin, DC and Campinas, Brazil. I think my opinion is fairly informed.

Despite it's crazy rise in COL, I think Houston is still one of the least expensive major cities in the US.

That's because Houston sucks hairy sweaty balls and no one wants to live there.

I grew up in a nameless, soul-less Houston burb. In my early 20s lived over by Shepard and Richmond. Moved away at 26 and have NEVER EVER wanted to move back. Have family in Houston area. Every time I drive into the city, my reaction is the same. Houston fucking sucks. No one ever wants to live in Houston. They just do out of situation. If people had a choice, they'd move the fuck out.

Life is too short to live in Houston. Move.

Find my wife a job and company she likes as much as the place she is at now. Fund me a job while you’re at it.

Mid july-mid sept is hot as balls, but other than that the weather is pretty great. Also, dont really have to worry about snow, ice, or earthquakes. There are wayyy worse places for weather in the US

Houston notoriously has some of the worst weather in the US. Most people in the northern hemisphere don’t consider 80 degrees on Christmas “pretty great”.

The bond thing is straight bullshit. I understood the need for bail reform, but they lost their damn minds.

I know it’s always been in certain parts of Houston but it is absolutely getting crazier.

Outside of Murder, Houston has made it basically impossible to hold someone on bail.

The cashless bonds need to stop. I didn’t even know that was a thing. They literally have no incentive to show up for court.

Cashless bond is not a thing for felonies.

These fuckers are all out on bond, not cashless bond, but bond.  You can see how well that's working.

Making criminal justice policy for everyone based on psychopath outliers is one of the several things wrong with our system.

Anyone’s opinion of Austin should be discounted if they only lived there 4 years while in undergrad. Same goes for people acting as if they have perspective outside their hometown if they lived their whole life in one city minus the 4 years at UT.

That's because people in the Northern Hemisphere are idiots when it comes to Christmas. Where does it say in the Bible it was snowing on lil JC's birthday? Why would it be? Bethlehem is at the same fucking latitude as Lufkin.

I spent a Christmas in the Galilee and the weather was enormously Houston-like, and I was about an hour north of Bethlehem. If you expect a White Christmas you've been sold a bill of goods by Yankees and Euros.
