Lol. Tell that to all the victims of criminals out on bond.  Well, they’re dead. Tell their families.

Quote

The United States incarcerates its citizens more than any other country. Mass incarceration disproportionately impacts the poor and people of color, and does not make us safer.

Please quote the source of that statement so some fly-by poster does not think I dreamed up that chicanery.

Someone explain how bail bonds work ?

a guy out on 3 bail bonds, gets arrested again. He’s just out what he paid and the bail bondsman has no liability ?

Bond is forfeited typically only when the defendant does not appear for trial, not merely when they break conditions of bail and/or have it revoked.

I quoted a two part statement.  The first part is a fact and the second part is an opinion.  I do not disagree with the first part of the statement I quoted.  It is the last part of the statement regarding safety that I take issue with.

There was no link in your post. Just the excerpt, as far as I can tell.

Still, it had my name above it and I don't want that stuck on me like tractor grease.

(I know you didn't attribute it to me and I'm clowning you.)

My frustration with sack bringing in

d28.gif

as a means to direct blame at a political figure he doesn't like is that in Texas, our state laws (Texas Criminal Code 17.151) clearly state that defendants "must be released either on personal bond or by reducing the amount of bail required, if the state is not ready for trial of the criminal action for which he is being detained".

It's a fucking red herring. It doesn't actually address why the 17 year old was released on bond. Our courts are over-packed. We haven't opened new courts in Harris County in a loooong time - the last criminal district seat for Harris was opened in 1984 despite our population growing by 2,000,000+. There's nearly 100,000 cases on the docket. The backlogging of our criminal system will drive these sorts of absurd bail releases, because that's what our state law dictates.

But hey at least our state lege is putting in extra overtime to really address the things that matter and affect us, right???

LOL.

Alex Bregman is decent 3rd baseman that is usually an above average hitter.  He's not been that good lately and is injury prone.

Captainant:  You're anti-Semitic! Why did you bring up the fact that he's a Jew???

Everyone else:  wha?

You're leading the charge on that effort, home chicken.

Did you read what I posted? Why the 17yo was released on bail? How our states criminal code requires it due to the massive backlog of cases in Harris Co? Or do you just want a safe space to shitpost?

Blaming someone's murder on progressive bail reform policies seems pretty Cloak Roomy to me.

As to the last part, I don't think that's provable.  However, as incarceration rate has increased, crime rate has been all over the map, high, low, and in-between.

And, as incarceration is largely driven by drug crimes, I'm not sure general safety is really at issue, either way.  If you're a drug-involved person, you're less safe.

Calm down.

You clearly had a fly off the handle reaction when Soros was mentioned and then talked out your ass about Jsack and the anti-Semite posts you allege, all the while completely overlooking the fact that you either didn't read, misread or didn't understand the Texas Monthly article  about TOP, Ogg and George Soros and then proceeded to bloviate on and on.   I will concede that the TM article was poorly written and the one particular sentence could lead to confusion.  Calling you out on your knee jerk reaction must equate to shit posting in your book.  If so, you need a new book.

Nobody disagrees that there is a  problem with bail and release of criminals.  We all agree about that.   The issue folks have with you is your hysterical ad hominem attacks.  They are simple and immature.

George Soros is central to a bunch of neo-nazi and other white supremacists' propaganda. Even if you want to blame something like this on progressive bail reform efforts (again, a very CR thing to do), there's no reason to use Soros' name unless you want to also communicate "a rich Jew is pulling the strings behind this" without saying that explicitly.

So nobody can mention his name due to the fact that others use him in their conspiracy propaganda and dog whistle signals?  Then Soros has no accountability at that point.  He can do what he wants, influence, money-whip and operate as he pleases.  Wouldn't everyone like to be in that position?

What is the fascination with Soros being a Jew?  I don't get it.  He's just another rich guy that I don't know.

Further, nobody is solely blaming him for progressive bail reform gone wrong.  He did, however, contribute money to the cause and the cause has its problems like many do.  Merely pointing out his role does not merit a knee jerk and negative reaction.  How can we discuss anything with such triggers?

Again, some folks need to calm down.

Fuck me for calling out sack for "soros DA's" two weeks in a row, am I right?

Shit deadshank, if you aren't familiar with the fondness of the right and far right to use Soros as a scapegoat for anything and everything they don't like, well then you haven't been fucking paying attention. In my original post calling out sack I even linked the Anti Defamation League's info page on the growing use of the meme on the internet and at large. I'm happy to link more detail and specific examples of it happening at the state and national level, but then you'd just turn your brain off because "CR".

Only if you are blindly partisan. Having a discussion about the failure of bail reform in certain cases is above politics. Bad ideas are bad.

And again, the Texas Criminal Code combined with our massive court backlog in Houston is the cause for these early bail releases. I even cited you the specific section of the TX Criminal Code. This case was not one of broken bail reform. It was a consequence of an overloaded and broken judicial system in our state.

Something doesn't have to be a partisan issue to be political. If it's a discussion about governmental policy, it's political.

@Captainant I am fully aware of the hard right, the neo-Nazi types and other dumbasses that blame everything on some grand Soros-led conspiracy.  I think they are crazy just as many overly political animals are.  You don't need to enlighten me.

Merely mentioning Soros by name, what he contributes to and disagreeing with his political takes does not make one an anti-Semite, a neo-Nazi, racist or some other type out of the social norm.

Or does it?  If it does, then he's got a pretty nice firewall to operate behind with absolutely no accountability.

I'm more specifically talking about sack, since less than a week ago he was popping off about how "soros DA's are responsible for the train robberies in LA" and how soros is damaging law and order (another extremely politically loaded phrase in his usage).

My point is - why is a single donor relevant to this discussion, more than other donors of similar levels? Why is the entire conversation and dialogue pivoting on an antisemetic meme, rather than on the actual factors that have contributed to the huge uptick in fucked up bail releases in our state - mainly being overloaded court systems and STATE LAW THAT REQUIRES BAIL TO BE OFFERED IF COURTS ARE OVERLOADED?

But instead, you'd rather spend words on how Soros is pulling the strings behind the scenes and we need to keep an eye on him?

I'm on record in this thread stating that the legal professionals in Harris county are doing a terrible job with regards to the case backlog.

I disagree with you that the push for one size fits all bail reform has nothing to do with what we see now. Those judges are elected officials and they either agreed with the reform ideas or received political pressure.

So in that vein @wildcat09 , I guess it is political. So we can't talk about something that affects all of us without it becoming political.

Reading this morning about at least 4 deaths due to DWIs over the weekend in west Houston. Cmon people, plenty of options to not do this.

one case involved an off duty sheriffs deputy escorting a large load on the tollway around midnight. He was blocking an entrance with his motorcycle and a drunk ran him over. Horrible. However I wonder if cop motorcycles should be used at night. I can’t recall ever seeing that.

Really tough couple of days for the Houston Law Enforcement Community. Rest in Peace officers.

"Oscar Rosales" is a huge piece of shit, and I have real concerns they find him. Ugg admitted they don't know his real name, nationality, citizenship status, or criminal record. He has the most non-descript appearance that a fugitive could ask for. If he cuts his hair short, he'd look like tens of thousands of dudes in Houston. He's probably going to have to do something stupid like try to get on a plane or cross an international border to get caught.

Sgt. Gutierrez's death sounds pretty tough. He was struck by drunk driver Lavilla Spry, and dragged for over a mile, and the drunk bitch just drove off. I'm glad they caught her so quickly. I doubt she gets life, but she deserves to spend several decades in a cell without air conditioning in Huntsville.
