Texas Women's Basketball 2021-2022 - "Vic's Got It Going!!"

Poor Vic - we finally got Mulkey out of the conference and now we may have to contend with with Mulkey AND Staley.  And Johnnie Harris.

By the time we get to the SEC, I doubt Blair is still coaching at aggy.

We have the 2 open ships we didn't use for this year and with our 3 departures (JAT, Ebo, Warren) + 3 incoming 2022 recruits so far (all in the top 60 - Codio, Muhammad and Mwenentanda), we still have room for 1 or 2 more.  The 2022 class is sooooo weak in Texas (the highest ranked Texas recruit is 15 and she's committed to Duke).

I wonder if Vic will take anymore committments (maybe Littlepage-Buggs out of Oklahoma, 6'1 wing ranked #24 to replace Warren) or hold them for potential transfers.

Yeah, finding at least 1 if not two transfers to add more experience probably makes sense this year.

There's very limited 2022 recruits left I would potentially want to take, leaving 1 scholarship open for a potential transfer after the season (+ any transfers out, which always happen)

  • #24 Littlepage-Buggs (6'0 wing out of Oklahoma)
  • #26 Kyra Oldacre (6'5 post out of Ohio) - McEntire should have connections to her
  • #70 Christeen Iwula (6'3 post out of Ronald Reagan HS in SA)

Interior depth is always an issue with programs, due to transfers and injuries.  I wouldn't mind grabbing one of the two available posts on the board (Texas has Ebo, Johnson, Gaston and Moore currently).  Littlepage-Buggs would be an ideal replacement for Warren graduating.

2021 recruit Latasha Lattimore visited yesterday.  She was a Syracuse decommit after Coach Q stepped down last month.

6'4 Forward (#38 recruit recruit in the 2021 HoopGurlz)

“Athletic front court performer brings superior length, wingspan, defensive presence in the paint; rebounds and initiates the fast break, runs the floor like a guard and finishes the play in traffic; soft touch in the paint, plays near the rim; continues with a dominant interior game; a difference maker on both ends of the floor.”

Her initial list was Syracuse, Cal, UCLA, Florida, ND, Kentucky, Baylor and Tennessee.  Sounds like she's going to visit Baylor and UCLA/LSU.  A quick decision is expected due to school starting soon.

This may be why Vic was holding those extra scholarships.  Unsure of her designation (transfer or free agent if Syracuse let her out of her NLI with the coaching change) but I'm sure she'll be eligible either way for 2021-22.

Lattimore's former Syracuse teammate Amani Bartlett committed to Mulkey.  Lattimore is still Texas/Baylor and their other teammate, Shayeann Day-Wilson, is either Duke or Miss St.

Also the UTSA non-conf schedule was posted - there will not be a Vic/Aston matchup this season.  You know (and this is just me), it would be really cool if we scheduled UTSA as our home opener in 2022 at the Moody Center.  Bring Karen back for what she also had a part in for the opener of the new arena.

We still don't have a schedule yet - also assuming the Tenn game is NOT our SEC-Big 12 matchup game and our likely opponent is MSU or Alabama.

  1. We hosted A&M last year, so we are traveling this year.
  2. Alabama traveled to OSU last year, so they are hosting this year.
  3. OU traveled to Georgia last year.
  4. MSU did not play last year, so they can host or travel.
  5. A&M is out as a possible opponent - they don't do re-matches from the previous year.
  6. Ole Miss and Arky are for sure sitting out this year.  Tennessee has played 3 straight challenges, so they are likely also sitting it out.

Dec. 1, West Virginia @ Kentucky
Dec. 2, Iowa State @ LSU
Dec. 2, Georgia @ Texas Tech
Dec. 3, Kansas State @ South Carolina
Dec. 5, Oklahoma State @ Auburn
Dec. 5, Missouri @ Baylor
Dec. 5, Florida @ TCU
Dec. 5, Vanderbilt @ Kansas

Based on the above, I think we will be playing @ Alabama.

Welp, REAL SHIT home non-conf schedule:

11/9 - New Orleans
11/17 - Southeast Missouri
11/27 - Cal State Northridge
12/1 - Jackson State
12/11 - Idaho
12/29 - Alcorn State

Road games @ Tree, @ Tenn and @ SEC/Big 12 matchup (MSU or Alabama)

Vic said they were having trouble finding big name teams who wanted to come play in Austin - just wow at that home schedule.

It's not a bad OOC schedule overall - but it's really really bad for Texas fans at the FEC.

We play the 2021 champs, the 2021 runner up, and two other teams that finished in the top 20 (#10 A&M and #16 Tenn).  Baylor may not have Mulkey, but they still have top 20 talent (Egbo, Smith, Daniels, Asberry).  ISU will likely be top 25. WV is a top 25 team.  OSU might be as well.  (Both ISU and OSU finished receiving votes).   Princeton is a solid-ass Ivy League program.

Is it the strongest schedule? Nope, not even close.  But it's a good schedule for this team after losing Charli, Celeste and Kyra and bringing in 6 newbies.

Conference schedule is out.

  • Open @ OSU on Jan 2 and close versus OSU on March 5
  • Road trip to Baylor Jan 9 (3rd conf game)
  • Back to back road trips @ ISU and @ TCU Jan 19 and 22
  • OU games - @ OU on Jan 29 and at home Feb 12
  • Baylor comes to Austin Feb 6
  • Back to back road trips @ WV and @ KSU Feb 20 and 23

We open with 4 of the better teams in the first 6 games (@ OSU, Tech, @ Baylor, Kansas, WV, @ ISU).  We close with only 2 of the better teams in the final 6 games (ISU, @ WV, @ KSU, TCU, @ KU, OSU).

Our hardest back to back will probably be Feb 16 against ISU, then @ WV on Feb 20 in 4 days and the back to back road games @ WV and @ KSU in 3 games.  Ouch for those travel days.

I have no idea what to make of this team yet.  14-4 looks right.  @ ISU, @ WV are losses.  Probably drop one Baylor game and one random other game.

14-4 probably gets you first or second place in conference as there won't be a standout team (WV, Baylor, ISU and Texas will all be good).  If we can grab 8 non-conf wins (all the home games + Princeton + A&M or Tenn), that's 22-7.

I think this team is going to be a lot like last year's team based on how young they are and all the new faces. Struggles during the regular season but peaking at the right time with the amount of talent they have.

I trust Vick can maximize talent unlike some other coaches but just look at the talent Texas is adding to the roster-

Moore (#6 recruit/5 star)

Harmon (#10 recruit/5 star)

Hunter (#24 recruit)

Lattimore (#38 recruit)

King-Hawea (Top JUCO)

Matharu (Former 5 star)

Masudi (one of the top JUCO)
