Texas wins 73-57. God damn we needed that.

Yes we did. Fewer turnovers and shot much better but I though Kansas and Tech had much tougher inside D.

Matharu with at least 4 fouls in all 4 B12 games, we need her to stay on the floor, wasn't an issue tonight the game was decided by the time she picked up her 4th but something to watch. Glad she got the start like TS12 wanted but we still started slow.

Warren and Harmon with much better games.

Stat of the night: They shot 4-7 from the line and we shot 26-33. Dang. We shot 26 more free throws than them and at a blistering rate for us of 79%. If those stats were reversed I would have been pissed.

Nice to get a win.

These refs are not calling this game both ways. That body contact on that Allen-Taylor drive has been called a foul all night in the favor of Kansas.

The refs didn’t miss those shots, the refs didn’t hack the KU shooters, the refs didn’t make bad passes nor did they pass up wide open shots. We didn’t lose because of the refs, we lost because Kansas played better

I can acknowledge that a) we played like a late Gail/early Karen team against both Tech and KU, turning it over, fouling and missing layups and also b) the reffing sucked and has continue to suck at both men and woman’s NCAABB and especially the ones hired by this conference

Wow. Compared to the rest of the nation this team might be very good, just doesn't feel that way in conference.

WV isn’t great, but they did beat Tech by 11, something we didn’t do. Felt like Vic really got up their asses after the back to back losses.

I don’t have the highest confidence going to Ames - ISU is very good.  Warren guarding Joens should be fun. They feel untested - they beat Iowa but they don’t seem as good as they were ranked (currently in the 30s by NET), but lost to LSU. And they beat OU. I think our schedule has been tougher (Stanford, Tenn, Princeton, aggy)

This year is this year and last year is last year, but we did win 3 versus ISU last year.  We scored 74, 70 and 84 (OT).

Ugh I don’t know I’d start Moore over EBo honestly. . . Idk what Ebo brings to the floor honestly

With the way Iowa State plays,  Harmon, JAT, Matharu, Warren, Moore (even Lattimore) is a good lineup.  Ebo is a liability defending those stretch post players (Collier could, which is probably why we beat them 3 times last year).  Iowa State isn’t an inside oriented team, which is Ebo’s traditional strength.

I would like to see Kendall and Moore get more PT also

Seemed Vic was intent on barking at Hunter when she was in for her defense. It’s why she isn’t getting time.  She has to buy in and commit to playing defense

Game 16: #15/14 Texas (12-3, 2-2 Big 12) vs #7/7 Iowa State (16-0, 5-0 Big 12)

Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022 – 6:30 p.m. Central
Hilton Coliseum (14,356) – Ames, Iowa

GameDay Quick Facts:
• TELEVISION: The game will be televised nationally on ESPN+. BJ Schaben (pxp) and Molly Parrott (analyst) will call the action.
• RADIO: 105.3 The Bat broadcasts every UT game on the statewide network. David Garrett (pxp) and Kathy Harston (analyst) will call the action. Check TexasSports.com for a listing of affiliates carrying the game.
• SERIES: Texas leads, 21-20. Last meeting: Texas 84-82 OT (March 12, 2021; Kansas City, Mo.).

SETTING THE STAGE: The No. 15/14 Texas Women's Basketball team will gear up for its biggest test of Big 12 Conference season thus far Wednesday evening as they travel to Ames to square off with first-place and No. 7/7-ranked Iowa State inside the Cyclones' Hilton Coliseum. ISU (16-1, 5-0 Big 12) is off to their best start in program history and their No. 7 Associated Press ranking is their highest mark since January of 2002.

THE SERIES: The Longhorns own a slim 21-20 advantage in the all-time series with the Cyclones. Texas went 3-0 over ISU during the 2020-21 season. UT is 7-3 over their last 10 meeting with the Cyclones.

BACK ON TRACK: After dropping consecutive conference games to Texas Tech and Kansas, the Longhorns regained their footing with an emphatic 73-57 victory over West Virginia on Saturday inside the Frank Erwin Center.

THE SCHAEFER FORMULA: Longhorn head coach Vic Schaefer makes no secret in the way his teams have found success over the years. Relentless full court defensive pressure, attention to detail, and limiting turnovers and mistakes have been built in to the identity of his programs. The 2021-22 Longhorns are no different ranking among the best in the country in several defensive categories.  UT currently ranks No. 2 in the Big 12 and No. 39 in the NCAA holding opponents to just 56.2 points per game. They also lead the league and rank No. 6 nationally in turnovers forced at 24.1 per contest.

SCOUTING THE CYCLONES:  Iowa State presents one of the most dangerous offenses in the country as they rank No. 2 in the Big 12 and No. 12 in the NCAA averaging 81.2 points per contest. They rank No.2 in the country in three-point field goals per game averaging 10.9 per game.

Big 12 Player of the Year candidate Ashley Joens leads the team offensively and ranks No. 16 in the NCAA averaging 20.3 points per contest. Lexi Donarski is averaging 15.6 points per game and ranks No. 19 in the country in three-pointers per game at 2.9. Joens also leads the team on the glass bringing down 9.5 rebounds per game. Emily Ryan paces the conference and ranks No. 2 in the NCAA in assists with 120 on the season.

NEXT: Following Wednesday's tilt in Ames, the Longhorns will head to Forth Worth on Saturday to battle in-state rival TCU. Tip is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT and will air nationally on ESPN+.

ISU usually runs a 4 guard, 1 forward lineup with JR Morgan Kane getting the start inside (72% from the field).  She's 6'3 and only has shot 3 threes all year (2-3).

It's the same as ever playing ISU - we have to guard both Joens sisters (37% from three for Ashley and 47% from three for Aubrey), Donarksi (39% from three) and Espenmiller-McGraw (53%).

They also hit their FTs because good shooters always do - 82% from the stripe.

We need to play Harmon, JAT, Matharu, Warren and Ebo/Gaston/Moore.  Going with more than one big forces at least one of them to defend against a guard all the way to the three point line.  Gaston probably can, Ebo is too slow/stiff and that's putting a lot on Moore as she's still getting into game shape.  Last year, we could play Ebo and Collier because Collier was able to guard someone all the way from the arc to the rim, leaving Ebo down low to handle the paint.

Looking at the box scores last year from our 3 wins versus ISU:

  • ISU 4-14 on threes (30.8% shooting overall for the game) and we won the turnover battle by 2 (17-15) and outrebounded them 41-31
  • ISU 8-24 on threes (39.6% shooting overall for the game) and we won the turnover battle by 4 (15-11) and outrebounded them 35-32
  • ISU 8-17 on threes (57% overall shooting for the game), got outrebounded by 3 (34-37) BUT we won the turnover battle by 12 (18-6)

The better they shoot, the closer the game - the third game in the Big 12 championship was a 2 point Texas win in OT.  The other two were comfortable Texas wins - 74-59 in Austin and 70-59 in Ames.

I don’t have a good feeling about this one. Good shooting teams hardly ever have their off day against us. We need to hope one of our girls gets hot to answer their scoring attacks otherwise it will be a long night. Getting production from Ebo in the paint would be a bonus but we can’t rely on her
