KSU #15 in NET (home)
OU #31 in NET (road and home)
Baylor #21 in NET (road and home)
Texas Tech #74 in NET (road)

Oh what fun the next 6 games will be!

Vic needs to figure out how to slow down Lee at KSU on Wednesday. At 6'6" we don't have the length to throw at her, hopefully Gaston, Ebo and Moore can get her in foul trouble. She's a shot blocker so let's work on those pump fakes ladies. Lattimore may get some time on defensive at 6'4".  Lee shoots .597% from the field .759% from the line and averages 25.9 ppg. (Sweet Jesus) Averages 10.9 rebounds, 3.5 blocks with 3 fouls per game.  I'm just looking to slow her down and let Matharu bury them in threes. Some well timed health and safety protocol issues for the cats would not be unwelcome.

She’s too slow to keep up with our guards but KSU will likely play zone on us

Don’t worry Audrey Warren will guard Lee by taking several charges. We thank her for the sacrifice

Let's look at it realistically -

Lee is 6'6.  She's a force down low.  OU started out small with 4 guards and a 6'2 forward (Scott).  Scott was so overmatched, she fouled out and only played 9 minutes.  Lampkin (6'3 forward) managed 8 minutes.  Emma Svoboda (6'3 center) played more than those 2 combined, only committing 1 foul and pulling down a game high 7 rebounds in 18 minutes.

So OU's counter to 6'6 Lee was 6'2, 6'3, 6'3.  Texas will be able to throw 6'4 Ebo, 6'2 Gaston, 6'1 Moore, 6'4 Lattimore (if she's not sick anymore) and if you gotta give away some fouls, 6'5 Masudi.  Like @texasstrong12says, we are going to full court press, make her run and tire her out and commit fouls.  Some combo of Ebo/Lattimore and Moore/Gaston constantly doubling her should help.  We also will probably deny the post entry passes better than OU's defense.  Their strategy of scoring 80+ per game and hoping the other team only scores 79 is interesting, but not going to work against the Texas and KSU's of the conference who hang their hat on holding you to 60% of your typical scoring average.

And we've all seen Ebo - smaller, more mobile post players can get by/around her.  Ebo just gotta use that big ole body to get in Lee's way.

This game is going to be won or lost by how we handle what is likely to be a zone defense by KSU - if Matharu/Harmon/Hunter/Holle can shoot them out of it, that helps a lot as our speedy guards should be able to blow by Lee's slow cement pole ass.

Tech's zone absolutely befuddled us, but we broke down ISU's zone.

Our rescheduled game in Waco has for February 4 has been given a time and channel - 7pm on ESPN2.   Both Baylor games will be on ESPN2 (Fri/Sun).  Nice exposure for Texas, since we only have 1 more non-LHN or ESPN+ regular season game left after Baylor (@ WV on ESPNU).  Everything but the OU game in Norman (wtf is Bally Sports?) is on something accessible (ESPN2/ESPNU/LHN/ESPN+)

Great analysis thanks. Extra rep for "slow cement pole ass".  😁

Would she play right away or has to sit out until next year?

Should be her one time free transfer.

Should be a no brained if she wants to reunite with Vic. A 6’2 wing/forward type? God yes.   We lost Chevalier and we lose Ebo, JAT and Warren.   Matharu will be the only senior on this roster.  Rickea's leadership would be an asset.

The only question is if she wants to go back home to Michigan. UM is a good program too

2021-2022: 41% from the field, 24% from three (17-70), 73% FT, 20.3 ppg, 6.8 prg, 23 blocks, 13 steals
2020-2021: 42% from the field, 30% from three (18-61), 55% FT, 14.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 7 blocks, 14 steals
2019-2020: 48% from the field, 42% from three (13-31), 72% FT, 15.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 20 blocks, 25 steals

Her freshman season with Vic was so good.  She thrived under him shooting the ball and playing defense with those blocks and steals.

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State women's basketball forward Rickea Jackson plans to enter the transfer portal, she announced Monday, leaving the Bulldogs without their top scorer for the rest of the season.

"She just wants out for mental health reasons," Caryn Jackson, the player's mother, said in a text message to the Clarion Ledger.

Rickea Jackson has averaged 20.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in 15 games this season. Mississippi State (11-7, 2-4 SEC) has been ravaged by change since the end of last season, when a flurry of coaching adjustments struck.

Coach Nikki McCray-Penson stepped down from her position before the season, and  Doug Novak, who joined the staff in September, was promoted into the interim role.

Her decision to enter the portal also comes amidst tension between several players on the team, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation.

A confrontation involving Jackson occurred during halftime of a loss to Ole Miss on Jan. 16 that resulted in Anastasia Hayes' late arrival to the bench in the third quarter. A source said more dissension occurred after the loss to Arkansas on Sunday.

Jackson, a Detroit native, was building on a 2020-21 season in which she averaged 14.9 points. As a freshman, Jackson made the All-SEC second team. She was playing for her third coach in three years, after joining the program under Vic Schaefer.

Jackson, 20, isn't eligible to immediately enter the WNBA draft, leaving her to play a final season elsewhere.

Had Jackson returned to Starkville, she would've been a centerpiece in Mississippi State's lineup next season. Guard Myah Taylor was granted a sixth season of eligibility, meaning she could return to Mississippi State, part of a core that includes JerKaila Jordan. Plus, highly touted forward Debreasha Powe is an incoming freshman.

Rickea will be the top player in the portal. Everyone will be after her.

Yup.  Couple of thoughts:

  • She didn't really look anywhere west of the state of Texas, so I'd say there's not a lot of concern about any Pac 12 schools being a threat to land her
  • Her statement saying it was always her dream to play in the SEC makes me feel like she accomplished that dream, so it is not going to be a factor in her decision of where to play her final season of ball
  • Michigan is a solid program close to home if she desires to play near family for a year
  • Texas is a very logical choice with the coach she committed to and had her best season under and she'd start immediately
  • Schools I'd keep an eye on: Michigan, LSU, Tennessee, South Carolina

I wondered the same thing but you don't hear of anyone getting a player mid-season that plays. Otherwise it would be big news -  "Texas adds ______ which should help against Baylor next week".  Always makes me wonder why players like Chevalier don't just wait to declare they're in the portal until after the season. Gives them more practice and playing time. Things might turn around for them where they are, could easily happen.

Vic confirmed today Lattimore is back at practice (non-COVID illness caused her to miss TCU game) and Rori was back at practice (exited the TCU game in the 3rd Q with what looked like a back injury).

Good news, we should be at full strength tomorrow.

Frank Erwin Center (16,540) – Austin, Texas

• SERIES: Texas leads, 25-17. Last meeting: Texas 59-48 (Feb, 21, 2021; Austin, Texas).

Notables:

OPENING TIP: The No. 9/10 Texas Women's Basketball team will look to capture its fourth-straight Big 12 victory Wednesday evening (7 p.m. CT) as they play host to No. 25/RV Kansas State inside the Frank Erwin Center. The Longhorns are coming off a 2-0 week in which they captured a pair of road victories over, then-No. 7/7, Iowa State (66-48) last Wednesday and TCU (68-47) on Saturday.

THE SERIES: Texas and KSU will meet for the 43rd time overall on Wednesday evening. The Longhorns own a 25-17 advantage over the Wildcats in the all-time series and have won three of their last four meetings include both matchup during the 2020-21 season.

ROAD WARRIORS: Throughout the first half of the 2021-22 season, Texas has found a way to play some of their best basketball on the road. The Longhorns are 6-1 on the road this season with 4-of-6 wins coming against ranked opponents. Texas defeated No.3 Stanford (Nov. 14) and No. 17 Texas A&M (Dec. 5) and No. 7 Iowa State. Their only road defeat of the season was a 74-70 overtime loss at No.16 Tennessee (Nov. 21).

THE SCHAEFER FORMULA: Longhorn head coach Vic Schaefer makes no secret in the way his teams have found success over the years. Relentless full court defensive pressure, attention to detail, and limiting turnovers and mistakes have been built in to the identity of his programs. The 2021-22 Longhorns are no different ranking among the best in the country in several defensive categories.  UT currently ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 25 in the NCAA holding opponents to just 55.2 points per game. They also lead the league and rank No. 8 nationally in turnovers forced at 23.3 per contest.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS:  The Longhorns will run into a dangerous KSU squad that currently sits in a tie for first-place in the Big 12 standings. The Wildcats are coming off a dominant  94-65 victory over No. 18/21 Oklahoma on Sunday at home.

Junior center Ayoka Lee made history in Sunday's victory over the Sooners as she erupted for 61 points to break the NCAA Division I single-game scoring record. On the season, Lee leads the Big 12 and ranks No. 2 in the NCAA in scoring averaging 25.5 point per contest. She ranks No. 2 in the league and No. 20 nationally in rebounding averaging 10.9 per game.

Freshman guard Serena Sundell is the other double-digit scorer for K-State at 10.6 points per game. As a team, the Wildcats lead the conference in blocked shot per game (6.0), assist/turnover ratio (1.48) and field goal percent defense (.352).

NEXT: Following Wednesday's matchup, the Longhorns will hit the road as they travel to Norman to take on No.18/21 Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 29. Tip is slated for 2:00 p.m. CT and will air nationally on Bally Sports Oklahoma.

This is exactly what Schaefer want. Ugly this game up and don't let Lee have anything easy in the half court.

Going to have to keep shooters on the court if K-State stays in the zone.

They will. It’s what Mitte is known for
