What the fuck is wrong with you, Austin?

I was on the feeder at 7:15 this morning at 183 and Anderson Mill and there was a guy jogging in the far right lane (not on the sidewalk). I was looking to change lanes to enter the freeway so I didn't see him until pretty late. I'll be surprised if the guy doesn't end up on the news pretty soon if it is a regular thing he does. Who would do that?

Daughter snapped this pic this morning:

What is that?  Some dude on his Rascal-ish scooter.....in a primary traffic lane.  Is there a sidewalk in that area?  Yes.  Is there even a bike lane?  Also yes.  Does Boomer give a fuck?  NO.  He'll just hold up an entire lane of traffic using his Rascal as if it was a freaking car, except it goes about 5 mph.

Everyone has lost their fucking minds. It's a race to the bottom for who can be the most selfish dipship. Old, young, black, white, male, female, rich, poor, doesn't matter. The entire world has gone full idiot mode.

Popular Austin restaurant Easy Tiger is in hot water for allegedly withholding tips from employees.

The situation prompted at least one employee to file a report with the Wage and Hour Division of the United States Department of Labor (DOL). That person alleged to KXAN that hourly managers and back of house staff received tips.

A plot to murder a rapper at a show in downtown Austin has led to the arrests of two men, according to court paperwork.

39-year-old Don Lee Bennett and 38-year-old Pierre Laday Jones were arrested on March 10.

Jones told police that Bennett and the other associate were planning to attend the rap show near East Sixth Street, and made preparations with Jones to use his VIP access credentials for SXSW to attend, says the affidavit. According to Jones, the VIP access would exempt the two men from being searched at the door and allowing them to sneak in concealed weapons.

SXSW has contacted FOX 7 Austin and clarified that there is no such thing as VIP Access credentials at SXSW and Jones couldn't have used any SXSW credentials to get in to a non-SXSW show.

Jones said the two men wanted to kill the performer in order to prevent him from testifying in a court case. Bennett was allegedly going to pay Jones $450 to deliver the handgun to him at the concert venue.

Jones also told police he believed the two men were coming to downtown from Killeen, that they were armed and dangerous and had at least six firearms, including an AK-47.

For those that don't know the story, local weather guy Avery Tomasco was in a small wreck a few months ago. Guy got out of his car and took a swing at him, narrowly missing him. It's all on camera.

Tomasco just got word that because the guy missed, the county attorney's office (Delia Garza, I believe) is dropping the case.

That....is fucking stupid.  Seriously.  First and foremost, because the assailant DID strike him (see the shove after the punch), so the DA's story doesn't even make sense.  But reason 1A...."assault" is a crime that does not require that the fist make contact ("threatening another with bodily harm" -- which throwing a punch is a bullseye) (contact causing injury is "battery").

Our DA sucks.

Not that it justifies the attempted punch, but it seemed to me that Mike Tyson had the right of way.

How so? He's supposed to yield to the car exiting the freeway, right?

I thought the exiting car was driven by the guy who threw the punch?  The other guy came up after parking and took photos, right?

But you don't see no bruises or marks up on Tomasco.  Because he's a Weather Man.  Weathermen bruise on the inside.  But you don't know that 'cause you an ignorant muthafucka

I wouldn't Trade Places with Tomasco.

Re: Tomasco -- Someone posted the story on Austin Reddit yesterday and he chimed in. He said that a new DA lawyer fresh out of law school had his case and told him there wouldn't be charges because it was hard to prove (?!).

Mysteriously, that entire thread is nowhere to be seen now.

Now the thread is there? The mystery deepens. Are nefarious forces deleting and then repopulating r/Austin threads? For what purpose? We have to get to the bottom of this.

Scrolled through and didn't see it. Searched his name and didn't see it. Thought it had been removed.

Also, the West Campus stabbing, well one of the West Campus stabbings, the stabber was also found incompetent.

Probably sent to Austin State Hospital for a few months of minimum security detention.

The problems that these cases point to are NOT that our DA is awful (he is) or that our system of justice is "soft on crime" (it really isn't).  It's that...for the millionth fucking time.....we have SO fucked up the issue of mental health in this country it's beyond belief.  It's a disservice to the public -- there's fucking dangerous people who are utterly disconnected from reality just walking around, ready to cause tremendous harm/death.  And it's even a disservice to the dangerous people themselves -- when they are not psychotic, they generally very very much want what most of us want: to live their lives without being hurt or hurting anyone else.

But, having a mental healthcare apparatus worth a shit would be pussy communism socialism, and these crazy people should just pull themselves up by their bootstraps and if they fail in that we should execute them.

Just so. Fucking.  Stupid.  It's maddening.

What the fuck with car dealers getting involved in homicide, murder-for-hire, domestic violence, and now arson?  And now a Nate Paul connection.  I don't have to tell you what leads to...Mexico and certain statewide officials.  And yes, Frank Stallone.  Well at least Nicole has an alibi from all of this.

But it is apparently more of a disservice to everyone involved to force them into help. We have to think of their rights.

In a sense we do- the largest provider of mental health services in Central Texas, by far, is the Travis County Jail. That’s probably cost effective, right?

Yeah incompetent to stand trial means generally put in a facility and force-fed drugs until sufficiently competent to stand trial.  Not sure how that works exactly in the state system, but in federal means incarceration in one of the handful of prisons with hospital facilities indefinitely until "sane."   See, e. g. Kellye SoRelle.

I don't get this, but I'm not sure that I have the answer. Generally, mental health patients don't like taking their medications for life. So, they aren't a risk to society when they are on their medications but are a risk when they are off of them. They just stated that the guy who took a machete to a jogger here in Austin is incompetent to stand trial. Knowing Austin, he probably will never stand trial. That might be okay if he stays on medication but the likelihood of that happening is slim to none. A mental health facility would work but keeping someone in a mental health facility for life when he is "okay" on medication isn't appropriate in today's society.
