Have been reflecting on my comments lately re: Houston drivers from Austin drivers

So, yes, Houston drivers are trying to kill you.  They will cut you off at 80 mph, make sure you never ever enter in their lane, drive like absolute maniacs anywhere, everywhere and across all 250 lanes of I-10.

The more I pay attention, the more I realize Austin drivers will sometimes decide its OK to drive 55 on Mopac... or to stop in the middle of the road and wait to cut across two lanes of traffic to turn somewhere... or drive along Walsh Tarlton, stop in the road and F'ing hit reverse to back into a street.  People act lost or stoned (likely) or both and subsequently will throw you the weirdest driving move possible.  Baffling.

white woman privilege.

The exact speech I’ve given for 30 years. I’ll take Houston drivers all day, because aggressive and homicidal is predictable. Austin drivers being stupid and pulling crazy ivans can’t be bothered predicted or planned for.

I watched a white woman in her Mercedes pull out of the light at Pascal Ln at 360, buried in her phone, IN FRONT OF a TCSO marked Explorer (which had to brake heavily to avoid hitting her), text some more, swerve a bit, then decided she wanted to change lanes to make a U-Turn at the next left-turn turnout.  She was 3 feet into the left lane before realizing there was someone RIGHT next to her.  So she swerved back to the right lane, braked, then took a hard left across the left lane AND the left turn lane into the turn-around, all with the Sheriff RIGHT behind her.  Worst part was the sheriff just let her go about her day nearly causing 4 wrecks in half a mile.

To this day I can't figure out how they managed to get a light there. It's an entrance into a gated subdivision (and therefore a private road). Someone had some $troke to get TxDOT approval for that.

it wasn't always private.  The neighborhood voted to make the streets private a number of years ago, but well after the light was installed.

I could swear the gates went up years before the light, but now you have me scratching my head.  Used to cut through Rob Roy to shave a minute or two off my drive, so the gates always felt a little personal.

I think I was driving an 88? red Mazda B2200 w/ a camper shell at the time - very lesbian.  I wouldn't want my poor ass cutting through that rich neighborhood at higher than posted limits either.

Lakeway, but...

These fellas get the wrong guy?

Quote

According to an affidavit obtained by KXAN, that’s how Lakeway Police found a man who was assaulted by a group of five men. Police said the men filmed the attack at an H-E-B on Ranch Road 620.

That group of men are now being investigated, and charged with organized criminal activity, Lakeway PD said.

One of the men identified as a suspect in the affidavit is affiliated with a proclaimed online vigilante group called, “Dad’s Against Predators” (DAP). This group, founded in Ohio, operates in several states, according to Lakeway PD.

The affidavit said Lakeway PD got a call on Sept. 27, in which witnesses said, several men chased a man “in the store and into the parking lot where there was a physical altercation.”

The men called the man they attacked a pedophile. Lakeway police have since identified that man as a victim.

The developer of the neighborhood paid for the light to be put in and got it in the contract it wouldn't be removed.

Txdot has tried to remove it a few times but the residents threatened to sue and txdot backed off.

I hope they enjoy having no intersection at all, because that's what is coming.   Maybe they'll keep the light on the frontage road for them. :)

Good.

I want the hours of my life back that I've spent at that light with no cars coming from the neighborhood

What is the overall plan for 360?  I don't hit it going N of 2244 much anymore, but I've been surprised at just how much dirt has been moved and lanes added just south of the bridge so far.  Link to any plans?

Sorry, I don't have the link, but they're out there.  They're making it a proper highway with frontage roads and overpasses at the major intersections (essentially only the roads that travel both east and west from 360 will get an overpass).  The clearing work you're seeing is for the frontage roads.   They started at Westlake, and I believe the Lakewood area is next, as they've already done some utility work at Lakewood along with some at Spicewood, although could have been part of the Spicewood expansion project.  There are zero plans to widen the bridge (somewhat understandable) and last I checked no plans to do anything about that major interchange at 360 and 183, so essentially everyone will be able to head north really fast only to wait through the light at 183 4000 times before going on their way.

Having to make the commute daily, I for one welcome the expansion.  The lights along 360 are a PITA and should look like 360 and Bee Cave Rd.

Westlake Dr, Cedar St, and Pascal can go F themselves with the amount of times those lights have been out of sync and hosed traffic.

Supposedly the end result will be only one light between 183/360 (Capital of TX Hwy) and Bastrop after all the work is done. Only remaining light will be at Mopac/360. And sadly this is one of those projects that YGIFS would be able to post several paragraphs on.

Local crime syndicate steals $57K of lingerie and a handgun

Spoiler

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Four people were arrested and face charges in connection with what police said was more than a dozen “high-value thefts” of lingerie in Austin.

Investigators with the Austin Police Department in early September started an “organized retail theft investigation,” according to a release from APD.

According to police, an Organized Retail Crime Investigator with Victoria’s Secret identified three suspects who were connected to more than a dozen high-value thefts in the Austin area that “resulted in significant losses to the company,” the release said.

Four people were arrested as a result of the investigation, and two residential search warrants were executed. Police seized approximately 2,000 pieces of suspected stolen retail merchandise belonging to more than 40 different retailers, with an approximate value of $57,000, as well as a stolen handgun, according to the release.

Anyone with any information may submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477.

As part of Project Connect, Cap Metro purchased 46 electric buses from a company that went bankrupt ... and the buses evidently suck ... so Cap Metro is parking them for at least a year:

Which is worse, empty diesel buses actual making rounds or electric buses purchased and parked?

I’m sure in January cops are gonna be so pumped to be writing bullshit tickets left and right. I feel like once COVID hit, the cops just stopped pulling people over. Now they’re fired up and ready to get back out there like the pre-COVID days.

Or maybe they could use CNG-powered buses that cost less, weigh less (don't tear up roads), have greater range, and have way less emissions than diesel?

Why are they suddenly getting fired up about issuing tickets in January?  What did I miss?

Part of me is looking forward to the possibility of some control over the multitudes of dumbass drivers out there, and the other part of me really enjoys never seeing cops around.  The part of me that enjoys riding motorcycles really, really, really enjoys never seeing cops around, as they love to harass riders for no reason all the damn time.  I've been pulled over before just because a dumbass wanted to check out my bike.  He couldn't understand why I was not happy about it and didn't want to hang out and answer all his questions.

Impressive rap sheet - 40 charges and counting. Not shocking the guy's out and about and an innocent woman paid the price with her life.

Quote

AUSTIN, Texas - The man at the center of a North Austin homicide investigation this week has an extensive criminal history, court records revealed.

Noah Mata, 36, has a criminal history dating back to at least 2006. Mata has been charged with about 40 crimes in Travis County including driving while intoxicated, assault, possession, fleeing from police, driving with a suspended license, burglary, and theft.

Police said Mata was inside his apartment with three other people. He claims he didn’t know their names. Mata said one of them had a gun, and he planned on taking it from him. Mata said he took pictures of it and then put it in his pocket. He said the man tried to get it back and they wrestled. Eventually, the other man was able to get it. He fired a shot at Mata and that bullet went through the wall and hit a woman, killing her.

Mata was charged with aggravated robbery. Court documents revealed Mata had an active warrant at the time for driving with an invalid license.

I doubt it'll go back to pre-Covid conditions.  You forget, without a competent DA / CA in office, the police aren't going to deal with the paperwork if the DA / CA is just going to toss it.  Until Garza is gone, it's going to be reactive policing.

Yeah, COVID is still around, but it hasn't been a big deal for quite a while, so why do you think something changes in January that will cause more cops on the roads to write tickets?  I still hear how APD is understaffed, so I don't think an increase in cops is what will change the level of traffic patrol.

This is where you should be able to sue the DA for gross negligence in the failures to prosecute scum like this asshole.  He (Jose Garza) should be held liable for the woman's life.

While I'm sure this Mata guy should've been locked up long ago, he didn't shoot the woman. He might have started the events, but the guy who fought him to get the gun back decided to shoot at an apparently now-unarmed guy inside an apt, miss, and that miss went through a wall and killed a woman.

Now, you can argue that it never would've happened if Mata was in jail and not there, or even that he started it (even if he had never been arrested before) and therefore had some culpability for the results, but we don't give cops a pass if they shoot at a bad guy and miss when there is a large group of little kids behind him.

Mata definitely should be in jail, but the woman's death should be on the shooter.

This is like the myth that Austin’s infrastructure issues are caused by neighborhood groups and environmental regulations. It’s based on some reality but ignores core factors.

But core issues for APD’s lack of productivity:
> Rampant trend of quietly quitting across the country in law enforcement
> Leverage for union negotiations
> Actual resource strain from Austin’s special events
> Resistance to citizen accountability
> Political resistance vs liberal elected officials and populace
> Countrywide trend of racism and lack of leadership
> Lack of community engagement since less and leas officers can afford to live here
> Shortage of well-trained police cadets and retention issues for good police
> Shortage of well-trained 911 operators
> Austin as a long-term homeless hub and lack of places to put people who cant or wont take care of themselves
> The list goes on…

But yes, the disconnect between the DA and APD and the citizenry is real.

The Austin homicide map is crazy when you look at groupings of murders, especially when you consider the Sunset Valley one was one guy killing his grandparents (so not random crime but some nutbag) and the one near Far West was vehicular homicide...

image.png.9806b0d8c85855a9f0a23e6d0eabdf8b.png

When you dig in the homicides in Austin, I sometimes wonder if the raw numbers tell the whole story and there's maybe less random crime than some thing, especially compared to other cities.

https://www.kxan.com/news/crime/austin-homicide-map-2024/

January 1st - man kills girlfriend

March 27th - child abuse

April 13th - fentanyl death.

June 19th - murder suicide

June 25th - child killed by a family member

July 1st - son kills father

July 3rd - murder suicide

August 7th - vehicular homicide

September 21st - grandson kills 2 grandparents

September 24th - murder suicide

October 14th - man kills mother of his children

November 18th - domestic violence (weird rationale on this one... https://www.kxan.com/news/crime/apd-84-year-old-man-accused-of-murdering-woman-dog-in-east-austin-home/)

I did not count self-defense in the above because someone still may have died.  Anyway that's 13 deaths that are certainly not random.  Not that any death is good.

Other things I learned:

A 13-year old can be a one-man crime machine

Don't wear a $100,000 watch around town

Don't slash someone's tires unless you want to die

Sure sure... Riverside is gentrifying but...

Not all Rainey deaths float

Some people die of "apparent gunshot wounds"

If you are homeless and you brandish a machete, you and a buddy might die

If you're not homeless but steal a homeless man's drugs, you might die

Like game rooms and throwing dice?  You might die.

If you provoke someone who is on his way to anger management meeting, it may not end well
