I wish I was making that up.

Which city council member(s) own stock in or have a cousin who owns a pylon or rubber curb manufacturing company?! At least go bollards so we can get some good HOLY SHIT vids of the drunks hitting them!  Those pylons are going to be like the ones on West Gate that get mowed down by busses and trucks within the first few weeks.

And then take 10 years to repair

This--the regular violence between nomadic aging adolescent ne'er do wells from San Antonio and Killeen can go someplace else.  They aren't coming to Austin for the music, they are here for mayhem.

I mean it might work? East and West 6th don’t have the same problem and they allow traffic.

I think of a city like Chicago, and most of those streets are open to traffic with tons of bar hopping happening.

It’s Austin so I am sure we will fuck it up somehow. But I like the idea of not encouraging more people to hang out in the street.

Hear me out.  Late 80s / early 90s I remember traffic on the Dirty 6th.  Yes, it was a party street but never felt truly out of control.  I feel like 6th street truly got dirty once they made it pedestrian only and it made it easy for people to congregate... specifically randos who come down to hang out in the middle with no intention of spending any money in the clubs/bars.  So, if you make it harder for people to just show up to party in the middle, you theoretically eliminate some of the issues.  As someone else said, east 6th east of 35 and west 6th don't have the same issues and the streets are not closed.  It's not as dumb as you might think.

I don't disagree with your larger point, but I'm pretty confident that riff raff will just move to a corner/side street and there is still plenty of room where people used to be able to park. Edit ... or just block cars trying to drive down it likely with intimidation and people will just stop driving or... drive with other intentions, very, very slowly.

I think you just have to do a better job of idiot control.  That is key.  Will APD do that.  At least the crowd will not be as spread out and maybe less harder to police.

The issue I see is the 2am bar closure mass exodus of drunks from inside bars into narrower corridors to move people. Used to be you had to get to the middle of the street to move anywhere as the sidewalks were full of drunks standing right outside the door of the bar they left, foot traffic, and all the lines for pizza and bratwurst clogging up your ability to move block to block.

The other issue is bar hopping across the street during drinking hours is more difficult by funneling everyone to the intersections and those likely won't clear out between light cycles creating a traffic jam cops have to manage with police officer whistles directing traffic.

These.  It's actually a good idea.  Sure, there are plenty of ways they can fuck it up, but 6th street has turned into a no-go zone for responsible adults.  It's for out-of-town troublemakers and shit these days.  I'm supportive of trying something different, as 6th street in its present incarnation is unsustainable, pointlessly dangerous, and a drain on public resources.

Yeah, I don't know how people in every other city in the world are able to do this.

Yeah it was always open to traffic in the 80s/90s/early 2000s.  Closing it down to vehicle traffic is a relatively new thing.  It started with Halloween, then extended to a few other big party nights, and then ultimately they started doing it every weekend.  And back when, it wasn't a real issue.  It wasn't until the lurker/loiterer/troublemaker crowd with zero intention of entering the bars, started occupying the street itself, that it became a problem.

I think there will be a transition period where that crows still tries to linger, perhaps on side streets, but ultimately without the ability to mass congregate in the most interesting areas of the street, they'll find some other place where they can congregate.  Highland Mall is no longer available but Lakeline is half-empty these days...

Honest question I don't know, but do they close broadways street in Nashville weekend nights? Bourbon is closed in New Orleans or is supposed to be.

i haven't been on 6th in 15 years and really haven't partied down there in 20 so none of this actually affects me in the slightest. Was just thinking out loud the problems I could see with it, I think keeping the riff raff in the bars and not the streets during drinking hours is smart.
