Sorry but the Elizabet Ney is a gem...  maybe it is incorporating the art and cleaning up the grounds.  I've seen that they try to keep them relatively wild and full of native plants throughout the year.  It could certainly look better.

$5k to a landscaping crew would be a much better use of tax payer money.

Why in the fuck would you want to drive down Sixth Street at night? Don't get shot at enough during your normal day?

I guess it makes it easier for kids from Killeen to do drive bys .

Dude, early 80s, saturday night, me and my bud in his sweet 1972 (iirc) z28 camaro rolling down 6th, blasting Metallica, high on Mexican ditch weed.

Doesn't get any better than that.

No, we were not from Killeen.

Watching state leadership work to turn UT into the world's leading right-wing university is fascinating.  I guess they were getting jealous of the folks down the road in College Station.  By comparison to those two, Texas Tech is starting to look like a den of liberals with its leading wind energy research and functioning fine arts departments.   The world is genuinely turning upside down.

Is the University allowed to say no to them?

I don't think so - but the university is actively suppressing one form of speech while welcoming its opposite. That is not freedom of speech either.

Crackpots always come to campus - there's a wealth of young brilliant minds to evangelize to your cause. But the people putting on this conference are no kidding, mask-off eugenicists. Jordan Lasker describes himself as a "scientific racist" (quoted from the linked Guardian article).

Why is he welcomed to campus to say that one race is superior to another, while any mention of diversity and equality is banned from campus?

I mean....you know exactly why.

White supremacy = a-ok, it's the official platform of the regime.

Racial equality = COMMUNISM FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL AND MUST BE BANNED AND IS A FIREABLE OFFENSE AND YOU SHOULD DIE.

Let me guess, our DA refused or will refuse to prosecute any of them.

He'll likely fuck up several of them.

But it's okay.  If any of the accused are MAGA-adjacent and our DA happens to get a conviction, our governor will immediately pardon them.  It's all good.

Yeah, that's not what I was asking.  Just wanted to understand if the data was accurate since it looks like we're off to a better year than 2024.  But thanks to both of y'all for taking it in a completely different direction.

For comparative purposes, the past 4 years, we were at 11-16 homicides by now.

The protests were different in organization than this group reserving the ATT Center and the hotel.  Whether that's the reason or just the political cover being used is up for interpretation but I'm sure that's what they'd say.

Glass half full of what is NOT wrong. I read today that prices for real estate and especially rent have dropped drastically (22+% YoY) and that a ton of new supply and housing has been built. Austin is no longer the most expensive city but now it's DFW. +1 point Austin!

All those new apartments built on present day dollars that are financed at higher rates, on top of peak valuations from TCAD with ever-increasing property tax rates.  You can't drop rent and increase costs for much longer until the new units aren't profitable and the rates are adjusted accordingly.  Again, voters approving EVERY... SINGLE... TAX... INCREASE is going to dick punch every renter and property owner in town if it hasn't already.  Now if you'd excuse me, I'm waiting on the green line subway to arrive at the station so I can get from downtown to wherever the hell this thing runs in south Austin.

I'm sure he bragged to his aggy friends how he put some woman in a Fiat in her place. "I done showed her my glock. Bitch didn't want that smoke."

Then they probably bonded by jizzing in a jar together.

I'm sure this is a problem in every major city, or at least I tell myself that. But got damned if the revolving door on releasing shitheads isn't getting real fucking old.

TLDR: In 2023, a recidivist dude terrorizes a neighborhood. Gets released. Feb 2025, he is caught stealing laptops from the DAs office. They are so in-fucking-competent that they can't even enforce security at the building/office.

https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/repeat-offender-steals-laptops-from-district-attorneys-office-court-documents-say/

Investigators believe Austin Wayne Mullins, 31, stole 9 laptops from the Travis County District Attorney’s Office last week, according to an arrest warrant filed.

On Thursday, Feb. 27, an employee with the office told a courthouse deputy the building was burglarized the day before just after 4 a.m. The total estimated value for the nine laptops is $14,550.75.

Online court records show Mullins was due in court on the 26th for a hearing related to a burglary case from early February, although that hearing ended up getting re-set. That hearing was set for 9:30 a.m., which was about 5 hours after Mullins’ warrant said the crime occurred.

Mullins’ records also show multiple drug and burglary arrests, including two jail sentences.

In 2023, Mullins was charged with disorderly conduct after police say he tried to break into homes in an east Austin neighborhood, threatening people with what turned out to be an air rifle.

Over the last two weeks, an Austin Police arrest affidavit states a man tried to break into homes in an east Austin neighborhood, and threatened people with what turned out to be an air rifle, according to court records.

Austin Mullins, 29, was charged with disorderly conduct. Police said this isn’t the first time he’s done something like this.

Records state Mullins was roaming the streets with his weapon days before his arrest.

Now neighbors said they were worried about what could happen next.

“We were driving to school, and I saw him walking down the street carrying what looks like a very large rifle,” a woman who called 911 said. She asked not to be identified for safety.

“He was wearing tactical gear… my little boy was so scared that this man was going to follow him to school and shoot up his school,” the 911 caller said.

The woman said around 8 a.m. on May 1, she saw Mullins carrying what turned out to be an air rifle.

“I just saw a man who looked very erratic carrying something that looked to my eyes just like an AK-47,” the woman who called 911 said. “It didn’t have an orange tip or anything.”

According to court records, neighbors spotted him toting his gun near these schools:

Thomas G. Harris elementary

Bertha Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy

Andrews Elementary School

Neighbors said Mullins was pointing his weapon at homes, according to a court affidavit.

“Just seemed like maybe he was having a bad day,” Nina Leonard, a neighbor, said. “And yeah… was not being conservative about how he was holding his gun.”

Days before Mullins’ arrest, neighbors reported seeing Mullins trying to break into homes while carrying his rifle. According to court records, police said the manufacturer’s warning label for the air rifle stated “Misuse or careless use may cause serious injury or death. May be dangerous up to 250 yards/229 meters.”

Court documents stated police arrested Mullins for something similar in December 2022. Records said Mullins was walking with a gun near Austin Achieve Elementary School while kids were outside during a physical education class.

Neighbors are questioning whether Mullins should be released from jail anytime soon.

“Being released is certainly something that’s going to happen in the future,” Logan Campbell, a criminal defense attorney with Gergen, Hale & Campbell (GHC) Law Firm, said. “On a Class B misdemeanor, you can only hold them in jail for so long.”

Campbell said a judge could decide Mullins isn’t allowed to have firearms anymore, or even put other restrictions in place limiting where Mullins can go when out on bond.

“I think he would absolutely be a threat to the community if he was released without some major treatment,” the 911 caller said.

So no-neck flashes a gun. Is there stand your ground case law about what happens if the other person pulls their gun out and starts blasting?

I mean flashing a gun is a pretty obvious threat. Stand your ground means you don't have to back down from that threat, right?
