What the fuck is wrong with you, Austin?

It will pass easily. Because we’re stupid fear based creatures.

Prop A will pass because you can’t get the police to come out for anything less than a felony with video evidence.

Prop A is dumb and goes way overboard, but the city’s reimagined policing bullshit and canceling the last 4 cadet classes brought this on themselves.

Responsible leaders would have said, you know we fucked up here and this is our plan to make it right, don’t vote Prop A because it’s too much/unnecessary but we’re committed to fixing these issues of great concern for a large portion of our voters, but instead we get what amounts to a bureaucratic temper tantrum where they are threatening firefighter/EMS budgets and using Chicago style politics claiming nothing is wrong and Republicans are just lying to you while they try to line their own pockets with city funds by buying more hotels.

Sounds like a battle between having your house burn down vs having your shit stolen.

The odds of needing police versus needing firefighters is significantly higher so if just based on that I would think it passes. It is quite interesting to see the different by neighborhood that are all opposed or for.

I bet it fails 53-47. It’s not like APD is some beloved institution and enough people will see this as the dumb solution that it is whether they thinks it’s a problem needing fixin or not.

Is there a thread that is going deep on discussing Prop A? I'd love to learn a bit more than what I see on the campaign signs. There is no doubt the police have their issues but it's also not even a question that crime in this city has risen dramatically and the fact that everyone is now told to just call 311 and expect a wait for anything that's not an active felony in process is insane.

You can say that about both sides. Are we really supposed to believe that we will lose our libraries and parks if Prop A passes. We can spend 175K per homeless person or 10B on light rails that do nothing, but if the police get a few extra hundred mill everything will collapse?

Yes, the clowns running the city brought in on themselves. It's going to be close but I don't think the prop passes. Mackowiak overplayed his hand on this one.

One of the more comical things is opponents using "budgetary concerns" as a cornerstone when our city continues to manically spend like lunatics on homelessness. You can't be fiscally conscious, and unconscious, at the same time.

Part of the non Prop A issue is having the lead spokesperson as Spellman. Appears to be a nice enough guy with a long history in the city. But age has gotten the best of him and plus his demeanor makes it apparent that he went to Adler's funeral director summer camp. Maybe more than once. A young and more vibrant spokesperson could turn Mackowiak upside down.

Will be interesting as I can't imagine we'll see more than 5% turnout.

What pisses me off is that, when it doesn't pass (and I agree that it will fail in a close vote), those clowns will take it as the majority's approving their asinine decisions.

Then you should be for it. The opposition ignores the context of the proposition and instead peddles fear porn about lost parks (lol, been to town lake recently) and libraries. Like the $125 million dollar homeless shelter (err Library) on prime real estate downtown.

It’s not a compelling argument.

They didn’t come out before the budget cuts. Real world isn’t like TV. They aren’t taking prints and looking for your stolen shit. They take a report and may remember to file it when they get back to station. That’s the end of police work for about 90% of crimes.

I’ve had my shit broken into, I know what they do.  Still previously if you had multiple burglaries in the area the cops would come by more often on patrol and would respond to suspicious person calls.  Now you get nothing.

Have you ever tried to submit a theft claim to insurance without a police report?  I have it’s extremely difficult.  Basic services that are provided in every major city in the US are no longer being done here in Austin.  It’s sad.

Prop A sucks, but it’s a sad state that something like it is even necessary.

we need better neighborhood policing. you should know your cops. they should walk around on foot. you notice more when you take a walk to the mailbox than you do when you drive to the mailbox. so would cops. but they stay in their tinted cruisers and seek intimidation over real police work and neighborhood engagement.

Not going to argue with you at all about the conditions that you describe.  Just one big question, though.....Prop A is 100% a response to the "defund the police" debate.  A movement that in Austin, did not start in earnest until mid 2020.

When did crime in Austin begin its current climb?  Was it AFTER the "defund the police" movement, or before?  And a follow-up question.....if it happened BEFORE, I'm curious how we blame the "defund the police" movement for it.

For extra credit -- has violent crime increased NATIONWIDE?  And for that matter, what do we mean by "violent crime?"  Because we have seen an increase in homicides....but an actual decrease in other violent crimes, like rape.

The reaction on this is based on a feeling.  AND, it's based on a feeling that APD is HAPPY to stoke.  Think about whether you are being played.  There is an enterprise that would like to massively increase its budget.  It is working in concert with the people who have a political interest in leading a petition drive to do so.  Shortly before that petition drive launches in earnest.....the enterprise -- very publicly and visibly -- announces that it just won't be providing some expected services anymore, goshdarnit, we're spread to thin and just don't have the resources.

You are being played.

I definitely don't have this data nor do I plan on crunching the numbers. Based solely on Murders the biggest increased happened in 2020 and even more in 2021 so it does seem to support that.

Is there a lot more to Prop A then requiring a certain number of officers per residents? That by itself seems reasonable in pushing the city to at least increase it's presence. There are likely way better options but it's not like anyone else on the council or mayor is out there trying to fix things. Instead they are lying to use through fake crime number using (per capita or only counting crimes prosecuted versus reporting) Plus since you no longer can call 911 how would you even accurately count reported?

No one knows why crime increases and anyone that tells you it correlates to any one thing, like increased/decreased police presence is selling a bill of goods.

One thing you can bet, though.  In times of social unrest, crime increases.

But yeah, about 90% of police work happens after the fact of crime.

It’s been noticeably worse since 2020. Ring neighborhood alerts has a theft or gunshot reported daily. Three families with small children on my street have all sold and moved this month alone. It sucks to lose good neighbors but you can’t blame them. You can’t leave your garage door up in broad daylight anymore.

DING DING DING.

We have a murder problem in the United States (again, the whole country -- in plenty of places that did NOT see any appreciable reduction in police numbers).  Otherwise, most crime has continued to decline.  But murder....we've got a problem.  And it's across-the-board.  It's tied to a shitload more than "how many cops are driving through a neighborhood and how many times a day."

But sure, toss more cops at it, at the costs of hundreds of millions of dollars.  I'm sure the cops won't abuse their power anymore, won't seek to increase their budgets even more, won't ask for more and more expensive toys, and it will all work out just as well as the "tough on crime" "war on drugs" has worked.

I love how the "small government" types LOVE them some gigantic, huge, massive budget government.....when it's wearing black boots and carrying multiple weapons.  Enjoy.  Just don't EVER come bitching to us about "fiscal responsibility" and "small government."  You "done lost your L.A. privileges" in that respect.

Murder rate per 100,000 in Austin from the data provided at the KXAN link above.

image.png.d2dbd0a6936b7bf19e85d5d635d45333.png

Yeah, it's gone up the last few years, but it's not like murder is running rampant. Yes, 2021 will be higher, but I still feel very safe in this town, especially in comparison to other big metros.

Quote

“This number is certainly alarming,” Roberts said. “But, you know, we are seeing a national trend around violent crime due to gun violence, pandemic instability, economic strain, things that traditionally lead to upticks in crime.”

In 1984, Roberts says there were 59 homicides in Austin. For reference, the homicide rate was much higher that year, because the population was a lot lower. Roberts says that year, there were 13.2 homicides per 100,000 people, while Austin’s homicide rate so far this year is 6.2 per 100,000.

For reference, the homicide rate was five per 100,000 last year.

With it only being September, however, it’s not a precise comparison. Interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon says compared to this time last year, homicides are up 74%.

The chief held a press conference late Monday afternoon naming what he believes are several contributing factors.

Chacon says gun crimes are on the rise, and he stresses the need to get more illegal firearms off the streets. He also says staffing issues that prevent officers from doing proactive policing are contributing.

“The fewer officers I have on patrol, it is going to impact that,” Chacon said. “And I think that has played a part in this overall increase we’re seeing in the numbers of murders and aggravated assaults.”

Chacon added his detectives are finding a number of criminals committing violent crimes like aggravated assault and robbery are out on personal recognizance bonds and reoffending.

“I think that’s something that we as a community and as a criminal justice system overall really have to look at and determine whether we’re making the most appropriate choices in individuals and how can we reform that, if necessary, to keep our community safe,” Chacon said.

To help with this year’s influx of murders citywide, Chacon has added two detectives to the APD Homicide Unit in the past month. That brings the total number of detectives working murder cases to 14.

Chacon says 49 of this year’s homicides have been solved, while 11 are still under investigation. He says detectives have solid leads in several of those open cases.

Both Chacon and Roberts agree the rise in homicide and other violent crimes is not unique to Austin.

Roberts points out a number of other large cities are not only facing their highest number of homicides like Austin, but also their highest-ever homicide rates by the end of the year.
