Our favorite junior college on the Brazos is only getting outpaced by faux-religious grifters (Liberty), a couple of podunk ag schools (Oregon State and Utah State), and weirdly enough Georgia Tech, which seems to be doing a full realignment of what kind of college experience they want to provide.

The Rice numbers are pretty stunning to me along with GaTech. Wow. I have a nephew applying early to Rice today or yesterday and, even though he's a direct descent of 3 Rice alumni, has great scores and grades, I'd thought "you're a white kid from the middle class burbs of Houston, man, you have no chance." Maybe I was wrong.

Pardon the wormhole, but the Georgia Tech enrollment increase is so wild I had to take a little dive. Looks like they're absolutely terrified of the upcoming student population cliff and are trying to make hay while the sun shines (and cover it up with "ooo access/diversity/equity")

I'm somewhat surprised to see USC opening the floodgates on enrollment, along with Rice. I wouldn't have pegged that on my list. It actually looks like Texas approach of standing pat becuase we're good at actually creating succesful alumni seems like the big outlier there.

I'm curious if GT numbers are inflated by their online comp sci masters program.

Admission rates are getting tougher. His best shot is probably via transfer.

Intentionally inflating enrollment at the expense of admissions standards isn't new by any means, but it's getting ridiculous. My brother in law is a consultant that works (usually) with sub 10k enrollment, private universities on aligning their initiatives/priorities with current and future realities of enrollment and resource acquisition. Some of his stories are absolutely wild, but the common thread is that the old guy who has always done things one way and will never adopt anything new is literally every guy in ed admin. They've pushed back so hard, for so long, that compromising academics in the pursuit of tuition is the only option remaining, and the inevitable outcome for most schools in this category.

Frankly, it's sad and makes me pretty angry, but the reality is that major universities will close entirely, or be stripped back to unrecognizable, exclusively online diploma machines built more on software than anything else. The "open the flood gates" approach is a short term measure, often used for short term gains that end up re-funding "the way we've always done it". Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Really curious what options my kids will have in 10 years.

Yeah, I understood that they want to be a big school because they don't think small tech schools in the "upper" but not "upper upper" tier are going to survive.  If only my kids liked math...

Our favorite Aggie ghoul posted this on the Ag board - it's quite the rant from Dabo.

Here's the rant.  The question is in the tweet below.

And a few replies, for the lulz.

I have a wealthy, very-well connected Aggie friend who, along with some others, is trying to put a deal together for Kiffin to replace Jimbo. Per my friend, it would require Jimbo accepting a very large, one-time payment to step down, but not the entire amount he's owed.

I would not like to see Kiffen at aggie.

I don't know if Saxton would let him do that. Why would he take less than owed?

oh yeah aggy delusion

First, it's Sexton. Jimmy Sexton.

Second, there's this concept you have have heard of...

Time Value of Money

All that being said, I don't think dude's going to punt on some huge chunk of money.

Sexton and Kiffin misspelled in the last few posts. Impressive.

Sexton probably views Jimbo as damaged goods and might want to hide him in a lower profile job and repair his reputation.

Dumb shit like an ego and legacy might not mean a lot to working stiffs like us, but it means a great deal to long time head coaches like Jimbo or Mack. They don’t want to be mercilessly ridiculed no matter their compensation. Sexton doesn’t want his client embarrassed. I’ve said it before, Jimbo would walk for mid $50 million.

Here's the whole press conference. He spends half the time making backhanded compliments about how much talent A&M has accumulated. Love Kiffin taking over the reins from Leach as Aggie tormentor.

Love the part where he says "Now they are harder to beat because they have Bobby Petrino running the offense."

Hello, Coach. Just came by to drop off your $9,500,000.00 check for the year.

Okaythatsoundsgood. Youcangonow.

First, we've got this idea that we think you will love.

[Jimbo puts his boots on the edge of the desk where they barely reach.] Shoot.

Well, instead of us giving--

Paying.

Uh, right. Paying you a check like that every year for the next 7 years, what about we give- sorry, pay you the equivalent of five of those checks right now.

WhywouldIdothat? Tellme. That's 20 million you're talking about me giving up.

But look at all the money you'd get right now!  You'd be rich! You could buy whatever you want!

[Jimbo lifts the check he just got and runs it under his nose. He laughs.] Get out of my office.

But-

You think I'd a come to this dump for less money? There's the door, dumbass. Out you go.

[Man pauses. Unsure.]

Scoot!

According to the comments below it, GT’s numbers are heavily inflated due to their computer science online program. Those students don’t pay athletic fees.

That said, someone posted that there is a lot of construction for student housing that is currently underway as well.

“What is that?!”  So cute!  I think he handled it well.  We’ve all been there.  Someone shows us a pic of their misshapen, jaundiced, alien-looking newborn, and expects us to fawn over the baby.  The only appropriate response is exactly what Freshwater did here

Def gonna see more of the Freshwater girl in the future. Mom is a smoke show and you know the girl’s gonna have daddy issues.

Apparently she’s 18 now and a Kappa at Ole Miss: https://www.sportskeeda.com/college-football/news-in-photos-lane-kiffin-s-daughter-landry-shares-ole-miss-kappa-gamma-pictures#

This is why we keep it simple and to one thing, that way we never have to come up with a bunch of tropes like aggy.

Well that and the fact that the words "aggy" and "simple" are just a perfect match.

Jimbo is a leader in his field, coming in hot at +600.

Screenshot 2023-11-01 133632.png

Locksley's on the hot seat?  He has had Maryland over .500 for two, going on three years.  He was historically bad at UNM, and drove that miserable program further into the ground than it had ever been before, but he actually hasn't been bad at MD.  What the hell does Maryland expect?

Danny Gonzales on the hot seat also.  UNM is what it is.  They will never, ever, ever be a decent program.  Every once in a while they'll jump up and get a bowl game or something, but they'll never be decent.  Rocky Long was their best coach of all time, and got them as far as they'll ever go, and they wanted more.  Well, they FAFO.

Are you saying that because he's sneaky fast?  Deceptively athletic?  A coach on the field?  Lunchpail kind of kid?  Kind of kid you'd like your daughter to date?
