I don't think Rodney was an experimental hire; most people knew his prior head coaching record suggested it was unlikely to work out. However, he performed so well in a difficult situation that he earned a chance. When he got hired, I mentally started counting down to who would be the next elite hire, as it was clear Terry wasn't the answer.

Of course. But the "replacing a successful head coach who departs unexpectedly with a well-respected staff member to keep the team together" strategy doesn't work out too often. At least Terry made a deep tournament run as HC. Earley hasn't done shit.

Exactly….Rodney was given a chance, a fair chance to get our program up and running….things don’t always work out.

I realized recently that there’s a better than decent chance that the coaches listed in Liucci’s ‘next come the championships’ tweet win more championships for Texas than for A&M

I mean, there's no chance they win more for A&M so sure.

Is aggy the only people keeping the overall makers in business? I know my PaPa wore them in the 70s working his land/small farm in Leona. I rarely see them “in the wild”today, unless they’re “painted up” by aggy. I guess because “Farmers Fight?”

I had a great uncle that rocked those and went by Bubba.  I miss him.  Great dream.

Last pair of overalls I saw in person was in 1984 - my granddad’s former employee mechanic at his rural Missouri auto repair shop.

You still see them out here in rural ETX. Stop in the Dinner Bell in Van sometime. One or two guys will have them on.

Grew up in SETX (Sour Lake) so that’s about as far in SETX as you can go. All my “coon ass” relatives grew up in China. That term was definitely NOT derogatory by any means, especially back in the 80s.

My “coon ass” family were rice growers for the Douget’s (extended family) and crop dusters, serving SETX and SWLA.

Awe shit.  I told my wife when me got married, overalls were going to be one of my first purchases as a married man, and by god they were.  Dickies overalls and red wing boots are my weekend attire around the yard/house.  When I get older, I'm moving on to the zip up seersucker ones. Never have to worry about pulling my pants up when I'm working in the yard.

My PaPa carried so much stuff in his overalls that it probably took him 15 minutes to stuff the pockets each morning, while drinking coffee for sunrise. He always had some of that 2cent bubble gum that the flavor only lasted about two- three minutes. One morning he even pulled out a derringer and shot a snake headed to the hen house! I’d spend weeks each Summer with them, as I was a “city boy” and he’d put me to age appropriate work.

He had a bumpy ass road leading off the feeder from IH-45. Once off that FM Road and on the entrance to “Bumpy,” he park and say drive us home! About a 3/4 mile stretch. At like 9-10, I could barely press the clutch all the way in order to shift the gears behind the steering wheel and with the bumps could never go from 2-3rd. He’d just say that 2nd was fine, as we’re in no hurry.

Your grandfather sounds a lot like mine. That's a great memory. Thank you for sharing.

So much angst over the dropoff in hitting from last year. It's good they're spreading it around to the fielding some.

My dad and all his business/drinking/hunting buddies wore these in the 70s.  I have no idea why.

Iron bowl is their cfb example? Slurp.

The Iron Bowl is a lot like the Texas vs ATM game in a normal cycle. Diehards watch it. Occasionally something is on the line. Mostly, no one but those two fanbases give any kind of shit.

One of the more eye-rolly things over the last decade+ was listening to talking heads wax nostalgic about the game since it had gone away. “Does everyone miss that match-up? The ratings never suggested so. “

They couldn’t name Texas vs OU for obvious reasons, and they couldn’t name Michigan vs Ohio State because they’re going to cling to the notion of SEC primacy until that is wrung from their cold, dead, tiny hands.

Most of my kin are scattered around that country. Silsbee, Devers, Raywood, etc. My maternal grandparents lived in Nome. Pop was a Cajun rice farmer (fields between there and Winnie) who preferred coveralls to overalls. Fewer openings for skeeters the size of B-52s.

My father in law has a closet full of one single set of clothes. A black v neck t shirt and dark khaki cargo shorts. He has like 10 pairs of each. He only dresses differently for weddings and funerals.

Thanks for directing me to the Texags misery. Cherry picking:

Priorities!

Earley may be an idiot. From the game article:

Sounds like the refrain in a 1978 disco tune. How do ya like it? How do ya like it?

image.png.50e8d0e6d4fdda198a07aa4ffc538604.png

It's one of them, Coach Earley.

Fuckin' offensive powerhouse. Not everybody can manage four runs on UTSA!

Earley steps up to shut down all the lies people have been telling about UTSA outhitting A&M:

image.png.01d2725d289023eb2e5e9f87cf513e83.png

Earley is struggling with his emotions about the offense. On the one hand, he loves them. On the other hand, they kinda suck. If they hadn't left nine guys on base, they would have won, no doubt.

Oops:

image.png.11ceff3f42a739e44675cfbafafadbda.png

So UTSA had a worse night and still cleaned your clock.

image.png.d3e743a3bbf3ff2b2a2d29160bd7ef6a.png

UTSA can also play with anyone. They can also beat ranked (for the moment) teams. How's winning working out for you?

image.png.9fee70464aa1ae9199324442ccb1cc9b.png

The great teams concentrate on mistakes that help you win. Victory Mistakes!

Overalls and Red Wings are still my attire for working outside. Especially in the summer. No tight waistband to keep air from circulating all the way up the pants legs, so you stay cooler, a jillion pockets to carry fencing pliers, screwdrivers, nails, etc. They are very practical. I would never paint stupid shit on them though.

Motivational jargon. The silhouette of the naked girl from 18 wheeler flaps. His favorite kind of sandwich. The usual stuff we're all into.

Yep. So far their are only two:

The Lord loves a working man

Don't Trust Whitey

I'm saving up for my Yosemite Sam "Back Off" mudflaps, so any additional paint will have to be put on lay away.
