Jimbo 2019: The Only Tail Getting Busted is Candi's

Aggy has the #3 class right now. It will probably fall anywhere from #6 to #8 from people passing them up.

Texas is #9, but we will likely fall as well, but what if we don't?

If there any scenario on the roller coaster where we finish with a higher class?

I like how looch gushed over carter’s football abilities, which is all accurate from what I’ve read. But he omitted the off the field stuff that’s been floating ethereally around his recruitment, and may have affected how strongly some schools pursued him. I’m pretty sure I read here that he tried to commit to bama and they declined. Looch is saying the opposite has happened. Neither statement has any facts supporting it.

Doubtful, but we may end up a spot or two behind them. A difference without a distinction to them if it was them a couple places behind us, but they’ll scream it loud and proud while simultaneously claiming their guys are underrated and ours are overrated so really it’s a huge chasm.

Perroni on the Jeffery Carter saga:

Texas A&M had long been either the top school or among the top schools four national top-100 cornerback Jeffery Carter of Mansfield Legacy. In fact, while he was seemingly close to committing to other schools multiple times, the Aggies were the one constant. In fact, he came closer to committing to A&M numerous times as well.

Just as with Oregon and Alabama in the past few months, Oklahoma had seemingly gained momentum with the 6-foot, 186-pound defender this past week. Though most of the Crystal Ball predictions for the nation's No. 84 prospect had been on A&M, there were many that were switched to the Sooners over the course of the week.

A lot of that optimism was built on the fact that Carter was planning to attend Oklahoma's big barbecue recruiting event on Saturday. His visit had been built up by the media and most fans thought the Sooners were about to land one of the top overall prospects from the Lone Star State.

The day before his scheduled trip to Norman, Carter and his family decided to make a last-minute trip to College Station as Texas A&M was holding a big recruiting event of its own. Though he was still scheduled to visit Norman the next day, he and his family ran into car trouble. On Saturday morning, Carter said he would not be able to make it to Oklahoma due to his dad's car having a flat tire.

That allowed him to spend more time in Aggieland, somewhere Carter had been comfortable for some time. Each time he visited previously, he had come close to pulling the trigger on a commitment to A&M. Now, despite many believing he was close to pledging to the Sooners, Carter decided to publicly commit to the Aggies late Saturday afternoon.

Oklahoma fans were obviously none-too-thrilled. They went from expecting a commitment from Carter to seeing him visit another school instead and commit to them. Apparently, the Sooner coaches were not happy either.

On Sunday evening, Oklahoma defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks decided to take a not-so-subtle jab at Carter via Twitter. The NCAA does not allow coaches to comment on specific players, but it is pretty easy to read between the lines.

"Real Richness is when you are so expensive that no one can buy your character!," he tweeted.

Instead of realizing that he likely typed while in a heated moment and deleting it, Cooks doubled down.

"Honesty is an expensive gift! Do not expect it from CHEAP PEOPLE!," Cooks tweeted.

For his part, Carter took the high road. On Monday morning, he tweeted, "Good day to be a Aggie #gigem"

While fans were bashing Carter for his supposed immaturity while making the biggest decision of his life to this point, it is somewhat ironic that he was the one that showed maturity when compared to a 44-year-old college football coach

The state of Texas is a hotbed for college recruiters. Pretty much every school in the country makes its way to the Lone Star State to try and pick up at least one or two prospects in every class. That means there is a ton of competition for the in-state schools.

Texas A&M has long had some familiar foes that it has battled on the recruiting trail. The most obvious would be Texas as the Aggies and the Longhorns go head-to-head for numerous prospects every year. Oklahoma also dips into the state a lot as do both LSU and Alabama from the SEC.

Still, despite all that competition, A&M has always done well on the recruiting trail. The Aggies are pretty much always in the Top 25 of the team recruiting rankings, with many top 15 and top 10 finishes as well.

But, the lifeblood of the team's recruiting efforts as of late has seemed to be the Greater Houston area. On the roster, there are quite a few key players that hail from Houston and the surrounding suburbs. It makes sense as pretty much all parts of the city are less than two hours from College Station. The program has also had multiple area recruiters assigned to the territory as well.

Where A&M has seemingly struggled over the past 15 years or so has been Dallas/Fort Worth. Up until the 2018 class, D/FW has pretty much always had more top-end talent than Greater Houston. The Aggies, though, have in general failed to land that talent, though. Texas and Oklahoma have both won national championships in the not-too-distant past by relying very heavily on DFW prospects.

In the five full classes that former head coach Kevin Sumlin was responsible for from 2013 to 2017, A&M signed a total of five national top-100 prospects from D/FW. Arlington Martin defensive end Myles Garrett was the biggest fish, ranked as the No. 2 player in the the country in the class of 2014. The other five-star was Allen quarterback Kyler Murray. An Aggie legacy, A&M might very well have lost him to Texas in the class of 2015 had his father not suited up in the Maroon and White. In fact, he still came very close to switching late in the process, regardless.

The other top-100 prospects signed were Plano East linebacker Anthony Hines, the No. 65 player in the class of 2017, McKinney North defensive lineman Justin Madubuike, the No. 56 player in 2016, and Dallas Kimball defensive tackle Justin Manning, the No. 73 overall prospect in 2013.

All were solid wins for A&M but the list of players that the Aggies were not able to land in that time, despite having a shot, is pretty damning. At one point, Plano Prestonwood linebacker Mike Mitchell seemed like he would end up at A&M in the class of 2013. The same goes for Mesquite Poteet five-star linebacker Malik Jefferson and five-star Plano West running back Soso Jamabo in 2015. In that same class, A&M could not hold onto the commitment of Cedar Hill wide receiver Damarkus Lodge. The Aggies also could not quite reel in McKinney North running back Ronald Jones II. In 2016, A&M had the state's top player committed before Allen five-star offensive tackle Greg Little eventually went to Ole Miss. In 2017, A&M did not get a ton of attention late from five-star South Grand Prairie safety Jeffrey Okudah or five-star Kennedale linebacker Baron Browning, both of whom signed with Ohio State.

There were plenty of other top targets that went elsewhere, but those at least made visits to Aggieland and showed interest. However, A&M could not get over the hump.

While the class of 2019 is dominated a bit more by Houston-area prospects in the top of the rankings, there is still plenty of talent in D/FW. And, unlike in the past, A&M is landing that talent.

Dallas Bishop Dunne safety Brian Williams was a five-star prospect and the No. 2 player in the state when he made a somewhat surprising commitment to A&M in January. Prior to the arrival of head coach Jimbo Fisher and defensive coordinator Mike Elko, the Aggies were not even players in his recruitment. Williams' Crystal Ball had the majority of predictions for him to end up in Austin. However, he chose A&M and has become one of the vocal leaders of the class.

Like with Williams, A&M was not really a player for Waxahachie safety Demani Richardson prior to Fisher and Elko's arrival. In fact, the former staff had not even offered the No. 70 player in the nation. Richardson made two junior day visits to Aggieland in February, committing while at the second one. He was another player that had multiple Crystal Ball predictions to end up as a Longhorn.

The Aggies just landed another top-100 prospect from DFW over the weekend in Mansfield Legacy cornerback Jeffery Carter. A former Oklahoma pledge, the nation's No. 84 player had a top four of A&M, Alabama, Oklahoma and Texas before announcing for the Aggies. At one point after decommitting from the Sooners, he was assumed to be a virtual lock to Texas.

Though not in the top-100 at this point in the composite rankings, it would not be a surprise to see Brock tight end Baylor Cupp end up there when all is said and done. He is already ranked there by two services and comes in at No. 131 overall. A&M and several other schools have him as the nation's top tight end and that's where he is ranked by 247. Cupp had offers from pretty much every national powerhouse but it came down to the Aggies and Longhorns as his final two before he committed to A&M in April.

Colleyville Heritage four-star wide receiver Kam Brown never showed a ton of interest in A&M under the old staff, despite having been offered. He made an early commitment to UCLA and seemed content with it. However, the new staff made him a priority and the speedster decommitted from the Bruins. Not long later, Brown made a pledge to the Aggies in early February.

A&M and Texas are also currently doing battle for four-star West Mesquite wide receiver Dylan Wright in the Metroplex. The Aggies have had him on campus multiple times recently and he has a very strong rapport with the coaching staff as well as the A&M pledges. It would not be a huge surprise to see him eventually end up in Maroon and White.

COMMENTS
This one year is obviously a small sample size but, to close out the 2018 class, A&M did get Arlington Lamar four-star defensive lineman Bobby Brown to switch from Alabama to the Aggies on Signing Day. Maurice Linguist and Terry Price have been key recruiters in DFW with other coaches making their way up there as well.

If A&M can continue to recruit Houston well - the Aggies currently have the state's top prospect in Atascocita five-star offensive tackle Kenyon Green as well as national top-100 cornerback Erick Young of Fort Bend Bush both committed - the surge in DFW bodes very well for the future of a program that has not recruited both places well at the same time in quite a few years

Aggy has the #3 class right now. It will probably fall anywhere from #6 to #8 from people passing them up.

Texas is #9, but we will likely fall as well, but what if we don't?

If there any scenario on the roller coaster where we finish with a higher class?

Why is it "likely" we fall, we only have 15 commits.

Aggies can't just be happy that they're doing well recruiting and the future has possibilities. They have to spin the fall of tu and the inevitable ascendance of their sleeping giantness. In their minds, they've already arrived.

Anybody around here proclaiming that Texas is back, baby? Nope. We've brought in good players and we got the coach we wanted, but nothing has been proved where it counts. We know the difference between gold and fool's gold. Most programs do.

Not the Aggies. "We're bad! You're scared! Poor t-sips, Sooners and Swamp Kittens!" And they ain't done nuthin'.

I punched in 10 3 stars and 2 low 4 stars in the calculator and got a score that would've put us 9th last cycle, so I don't think it's likely we finish outside the top 10.

What is so special about their class?  It's a good class.  It isn't elite by any means.  It's no better than multiple Sumlin classes, and worse on paper than at least one of them.  I don't understand the "we've never recruited like this until Jimbo" narrative.

You have a new coach.  And he brought in a bunch of really strong recruiters with questionable coaching acumen.  This is below what I expected.  Way too much bread.

To make this story thread related, the bully’s name is Billy and he was wearing a Johnny douche nozzle jersey during the corndog incident.  #makin’daddyproud.

It's amazing they haven't figured this out.

The '19 class is likely going to finish in the 6th to 10th range. Their current composite average is .9057. They will likely end up with one 5 star commit.

The '14 class finished 5th, with a composite average of .9099 and they landed three 5 star commits. A&M's '14 class will almost certainly be better than this '19 class in terms of recruiting class ranking ,quality (composite average), and # of 5 star signees. If aggy took 26 or so commits in the '14 class it would have ranked in the top 3 range.

The '15 class finished 11th, with a composite average of .8903 and they landed three 5 star commits. The '19 class won't be much better if at all than the '14 class. The '19 class will likely be ranked higher but there won't be much difference in the quality (composite average).

The aggys obviously squandered good classes under Rumlin. The more pertinent question is what Jimbo did with even higher rated players. What’s he done without famous Jameis? Not a damn thing.

It wasn't just Jameis.  His recruiting competition (Miami and Florida) both sucked when he got the job.  And the ACC when he started was awful as Miami was down, Clemson was down, Va Tech was nothing special, and Louisville was in the Big East.  He got lucky he did not have to face a great team in the BCS title game too,

Generation player + very high recruiting classes compared to the competition + easy competition = a lot of wins

We'll see what happens when the competition talent level increases dramatically, especially if there is no Winston in the fold.

It's cute that they're comparing their supposed "best class ever" to what will likely be a down year in recruiting for us (but still probably close to a top 10 class) inbetween stacked 2018 and 2020 classes.

They need to be put on suicide watch ahead of us landing Evans, Demas, Lindberg, George, and Garth next year.

If we land all those 2020 guys then Jordan Jefferson stands a good chance to be #1 in the Liucci top 44 for next year.
