QBs are gonna have a learning curve in a new offense. Especially unexperienced guys. Not surprising there is work to be done there.

I also think it's possible he's more critical of QBs since that's his baby

Turnovers on what sound like a late throw over the middle from the more experienced guy is a bad data point IMO

Given Sark’s coaching expertise and the experience level of our two QBs, anyone expecting a glowing review of the QBs after the first scrimmage is not living in reality.

Turnovers and touchdowns are the key. Give me the guy who doesn’t turn it over and throws for TDs

You should feel bad about not understanding that most OT’s have a preferred side and that every single practice report has listed the depth chart for the right side as an injured Hookfin and walk-ons, not Karic. Feel free to go argue with the staff about why they aren’t listing Karic over there too.

Does that mean he can’t move over? Of course not. OL are always moved around when injuries occur and he can move over.  No one ever said he couldn’t.

But what’s really dumb about your whole focus on whether Karic is a possible RT is that you’ve missed the more important point. One proven guy to backup two starters, one of whom is coming off a major injury, and saying this is more than enough depth is just dumb. You then say Hookfin is solid but there has been no proof yet he’s solid. Maybe he is. Maybe he isn’t. You don’t know that.

Those aren’t staff depth charts where they’re listing players, they’re just observations by media guys about who takes drills in what order. It shouldn’t be surprising that the same (true backup) player doesn’t play both LT and RT in the same drill and therefore the walkons end up getting reps.

Seems like a lot of posters here would prefer their first year coach to talk about how some position groups are better than ones that he won a national championship with.

I personally would love that, in the unlikely event that it were actually... you know... true.

IT scrimmage notes

By: Justin and Eric

The usual caveats apply: zero sum, it’s early in camp, the defense is typically ahead of the offense at this juncture, and the defense should be better and more experienced anyways

Read that again, please.

Also, different sources see different things.

Quarterback

Casey Thompson threw two picks, and had his share of check downs, but he also made some nice passes including one to Jared Wiley when he stepped up in the pocket. He also found Bijan on a scramble for a TD but that may have been called back. Not sure. Sounds like Casey made a play in any event. Casey did scramble for a touchdown run of his own. Thompson also had another nice throw to Troy Omeire like he did in practice recently, but too often plays with his arm are outliers.

Hudson Card should have had thrown one pick, maybe two himself. Kitan Crawford dropped one and another pass was dangerously thrown into double coverage down the field. He also missed a couple of throws on the few occasions he had time in the pocket (same goes for Thompson). He did hit Jordan Whittington on a shorter touchdown throw. He used his legs, one on a called read for 15 yards and another on a scramble. He didn’t look very comfortable back there.

These guys have a couple of things in common: the d-line physically whipped the offensive line (goes for 1st and 2nd team) and it doesn’t sound like the WRs are doing enough to get open.

Wide Receivers

Simply put, the DB’s are better. There were too many drops, even in warmups.

Focusing on the good…Whittington had the lone TD reception of the day (assuming Bijan’s was called back) on a short route where he broke a couple tackles; Omeire had that nice grab; Kai Money had a nice pick-up with the offense simulating being backed up on its own 1. Xavier Worthy had a nice reception that sounds more like great play design than pitch and catch. Marcus Washington had a couple of grabs.

Bubble screens weren’t working which tells us the blocking wasn’t good. The more things change…

These guys need to step it up overall or the running game needs to get going. Whynotboth.gif

Running Backs

Tough sledding for sure. Bijan had a short touchdown run where he created it himself. He also had the aforementioned reception over the middle. He didn’t have a ton of carries, not that we should expect different.

Roschon had a good drive that was capped off by Bijan’s TD. He also ran hard and might have had a short TD of his own.

Keilan Robinson flashed as a receiver and as a returner where he ”broke” the first wave of coverage personnel. Didn’t here anything about him running the ball.

Jonathon Brooks showed well in his carries. A couple people noted how he belongs.

Gabe Watson had a TD but probably versus the threes.

Tight Ends

Obviously they didn’t block really well. Wiley had a nice grab. Brewer had a couple of receptions and looked more athletic. Freshman Gunnar Helm had a big “move the pile” play after his reception. That got people excited.

It sounds like Sark can scheme these guys into space, at least somewhat.

Offensive/Defensive Line

Writing about one is writing about the other. There was way too much interior pressure from Keondre Coburn, T’Vondre Sweat, and Moro Ojomo. Ojomo and Coburn had sacks but sometimes the play was blown dead because most of the d-line was in the backfield. The second team d-line did well, too.

The DB’s assisted with a couple of coverage sacks. We think Ray Thornton got home once.

There were a few times they created a clean pocket but weren’t aided by their teammates.

OL is usually the longest to get hitting on all cylinders and right now they’re not getting help from green quarterbacks who aren’t getting help from the wide receivers. Team sport, imo.

Linebackers

David Gbenda timed a beautiful delayed blitz for a sack up the gut.

Luke Keuchlymeyer had yet another interception.

Devin Richardson and Jaylan Ford played a considerable amount but we didn’t hear anything good or bad.

Defensive Backs

New first team nickel Anthony Cook had a big day. He split doubles on a couple of occasions to blow up screens. We think he also had a PBU. Cook also played safety in base when nickel comes out.

Jerrin Thompson had a pick.

With Josh Thompson sitting out to rest his hamstring, Jahdae Barron played a lot with the ones along with Crawford.

We didn‘t hear much about the safeties but that’s to be expected given offensive struggles.

*****

We’ll give special teams a little more time to round into form. Dicker hit a FG or two but punter is a bit of a mystery at this time.

*****

A lot of today, but not all, was red zone simulation with limited space to operate in. That benefits the defense.

If you liked the offensive staff a month ago this is no time to worry. They’re here to develop and improve these players. These coaches will develop them, but so too will playing this defense.

Listening to Sark’s media availability you get an entirely different context on the QB play than reading one tweet. Anyone freaking out over that one line without the rest of the interview deserves the anxiety they bring on themselves.

Our TEs and WRs can't block?  Can that get coached up?

I really hope the report about next Saturday is that the QBs have really turned it around, and that the offense is really starting to make sense for them. I hope the OLine gets at least slightly better, and our wide receivers learn how to catch. For fucks sake

Don't give a shit about reports...

Just get'em ready, and kick Cajuns asses on Sept 4th
