Basically what everyone else said but also that you don't double 11 versus an ace if dealer stands on 17 (if you can still find those games).  While dealer hitting soft 17 is generally bad for player it does increase the odds the dealer eventually busts, so doubling 11 vs A is a very slight favorite over just hitting (EV of .11 versus .10).

https://wizardofodds.com/games/blackjack/hand-calculator/

Here's a good site that gives you EV of each move depending on applicable table rules, your cards and the dealer's. Basically if you typed in every scenario and wrote down the highest ev under each scenario you'd have the basic strategy chart.

Note that there are a couple of weird situations where how you get your total (i.e. 6-5 versus 9-2) slightly affects your ev due to there being less remaining good cards because you already ate one with your hand.  It's miniscule and usually only comes up in single or double deck games.

But if you're going to get that deep in the weeds start counting cards and changing the strategy table based on count (e.g. with any positive count the table rec switches to stand from hit when you have 16 versus 10).  Of course, one of the tells of a counter is they don't hit 16 vs 10 when they have a big bet.

If you are sitting down to play a 2 hour session just have fun and assume you've lost everything you have bet. Double down on 13 and do fun shit for the rush. Split 10s. Live a little.

For the love of all things holy, please don't do this. Just don't.

I’d assume if you double down on a hand that can bust, house won’t let you take your card face down.

Why not? They still have to deal the table and you can't take another card.

Because if you can bust they’ll process that before the dealer processes their hand - if player busts first, house wins even if dealer eventually busts against another player.

I can’t see the house allowing dealer to bust then turn over the face down card to show a bust on the player double down.

Oh when it got to the dealers action you'd have to show for sure, they can deal it face down though and just flip it.

There's some casinos that deal all cards face down.

I would suspect a dealer wouldn't be allowed to deal a double down card face down to a potentially bustable double.   That's not to say that it couldn't happen in a one off dealer screw up.

CSB:  I once was at a table where a drunk as hell hooker hit to something like 30 on a BJ hand dealt initial two cards down.  Pit boss came over and paid the rest of the table as she had taken a couple of cards she shouldn't have been allowed to and it fucked everything up.

You can hit/ double a blackjack.  The hand is not over because of being dealt a natural 21.  You can still take insurance/ even money.  You can hit.  You can double.

Getting to 30, while insane, is not a misdeal if the 3rd card was a 10 value and the 4th card was a nine. She drew until she busted.

What other people do doesn't make a shit. Every card has an EV regardless of who does what. It doesn't matter if everyone plays the book or not at a table.

This is true. But most nice casinos require the dealer to call over a pit boss to approve some moronic move like doubling a 13. It kills the flow of the game.

That's if you are doing erratic bets and stuff that advantage players do.

There is no flow of the game its a casino and none if these games are skill games, they are about minimizing your exposure, but every single game has a negative EV on your individual bet. Advantage players just get lucky or are straight up cheating like Phil Ivey.

It’s not just when it’s erratic bets. I’ve seen it happen multiple times with people betting 100% consistently. I always assumed it’s so the pit boss can make sure the player isn’t overly intoxicated and understands what they are doing, but I admittedly don’t know.

And I don’t mean disrupting the flow of the game has any effect on my EV, it doesn’t. But it’s annoying when I’m sitting with 3-4 friends having fun and every 5th hand the dealer has to call the pit boss over to ok the move. My EV is unaffected but my buzz is.

I was referencing the game Blackjack with "BJ", not that she was dealt blackjack originally.

The game was cards dealt face down, player handles the cards.  She kept hitting and when she reached over 21 on cards face up she flipped over something like 12 or 13 in her original 2 cards.  Everyone assumed she would have something like 2, 2 on her original  face down cards, but she was busted on a card before she flipped over, so it screwed up the deck.
