Alright, so I'm gonna go full pussy mode, but my first "real" girlfriend from high school and I dated for about 2 years, and she broke up with me on Valentine's Day. She came by to see me one last time and gave me a mixed cd of some really good songs (Beatles, Collective Soul, etc), but one song on there hit the hardest and it was...Mariah Carey's Forever lol. Anytime that song comes on it ALWAYS takes me back, and I don't even like Mariah Carey, nor am I into that kind of music, but it's a decent song.

Finally. I got to get this off my chest.

I had forgot about this song until I remembered it in the one hit wonder thread.  The “she” and “her” is the earth/nature and the singer might as well be me, or might as well be all of humanity.

When I walk beside her
I am the better man
When I look to leave her
I always stagger back again
Once I built an ivory tower
So I could worship from above
And when I climbed down to be set free
She took me in again

There's a big, a big hard sun
Beatin' on the big people
In the big hard world

When she comes to greet me
She is mercy at my feet
When I stay to pillage her
She just throws it back at me
Once I sought an early grave
To find a better land
She just smiled and laughed at me
And took her blues back again

There's a big, a big hard sun
Beatin' on the big people
In the big hard world

And when I go to cross that river
She is comfort by my side
When I try to understand
She just opens up her eyes

There's a big, a big hard sun (There's a big, big hard sun)
Beatin' on the big people (On the people)
In the big hard world (Hard world, yes it is)

Once I stood to lose her
When I saw what I had done
Bound down and flew away the hours
Of her garden and her sun
So I tried to warn her
I'll turn to see her weep
Forty days and forty nights
And it's still coming down on me (oh, yes it is)

There's a big, a big hard sun (Big hard sun)
Beatin' on the big people
In the big hard world...

Newell before even my dads time but that biopic for the temptations was on.  And I gotta say nothing that will make me cry as I wasn’t alive but some of that shit is touching.  Different era and to think of my grandparents or even great grandparents it’s meaningful.  Different times. Not better.  Just different

one more not a tear jerker but brings back memories. What’s going on by some chick band

one of Beach House's new songs. incredible.

There's a light going out tonight

Driving fast

Flashing lines

It's too late now to say goodbye

The stars were there

In our eyes

When you were mine

We fell across the sky

That blade up against the wall

Out there on the

But not the only one

Shadow from the sun

Somewhere out on the radio

Look up high

Now you're gone

I see it now when it's photographed

Something good

Never meant to last

I don't wanna know how the story ends

From now to then

Whеn you were mine

Wе fell across the sky

It may be out of sight but never out of mind

Up there on the run

You're not the only one

Shadow from the sun

Backlit up against the wall

Superstar, shining far

When you were mine

We fell across the sky

It may be out of sight but never out of mind

Out there on the run

You're not the only one

Shadow from the sun

Backlit up against the wall

Superstar, shining far

When you were mine

It may be out of sight but never out of mind

Backlit up against the wall

Superstar, shining far

The story of Jimmy Webb hearing this song for the first time on his green transistor radio he had with him on his tractor which he immediately wrecked along with a duck pond is a real life When You Wish Upon A Star story. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jimmy-webb/id1564119538?i=1000528963834

My mom played the shit out of Rod Stewart doing Reason to Believe after her first divorce but I prefer the original from Tim Hardin.

My dad loved booze, sports and himself. He especially liked music about booze.

My divorce song was the faces losin’ you. It was the ringtone for my ex for many years. I think I’ve shared this before but she’d call every Saturday while I coached my sons soccer game to find out what the schedule was. 5 little kids on the sidelines started moving In sync when they’d hear the guitar riff and bass and the song would go on for awhile because I wouldn’t answer the phone.

My daughter wanted to be more than a band geek in 7th grade and taught herself guitar. She played Folsom Prison Blues for me and I told her if she could play it and sing it then I’d sign her up for guitar lessons. A week later she did. Her guitar teacher was a 6’6 Arkansas good ole boy whose specialty was Spanish classical guitar. He was perfect. She learned so many songs but one of my faves was Malagueña. I have a version by Danny Gatton from a Josh Charles recording but it’s not on YouTube.

My son got to do a dj shift in college last year and his first song was…

So many powerful emotional songs out there.

Girl from the north country on Nashville skyline is duet by Dylan and Cash.

This is my favorite Dylan album and when my wife was forced out for the country for visa issues. This song and some belgian style triples could really make it dusty. Give it a listen, it might be dusty over at your house.

I love that flaming lips song. Super underrated

Anyone remember Shenandoah?  They had a great one called “somewhere in the vicinity of the heart “.  Great if your daddy or you was a truck driver

We had just dropped off my sister at the airport. We lived in a Germany at the time and she was coming to the US for college. The Elton John mix tape just happened to play Sad Songs. It was hard to not get choked up on the drive home.

In 2006, I was pursuing my now-wife. We had gone on a few dates, and I thought things were going in the right direction. Little did I know she still had some feelings for her ex, and traveled with him when he was back in the US for a business trip. I was devastated at the time, and my DMB tape was worn out because I playing Grace is Gone over and over (My wife’s name is Grace so it was more poignant).

I was an emotional wreck, and the lyrics really reflected how I was at the time (except for the heavy drinking part). Even though we've been married for 13 years, I still occasionally got back to that time and it puts me in a really dark place. It's not healthy, but that was probably the second lowest point in my life.

Neon shines through smokey eyes tonight
It's 2 a.m, I'm drunk again
And it's heavy on my mind
It's heavy on my mind

I could never love again
So much as I love you
Where you end, where I begin
Is like a river going through

Take my hands, take my heart
I need them no more
If never again I fall upon the one I so adore

Excuse me please, one more drink
Could you make it strong?
'Cause I don't need to think
She broke my heart
My grace is gone
Another drink and I'll move on

One drink to remember
Then another to forget
How could I ever dream to find
A lover like a you again, lord
One drink to remember
Then another to forget

Excuse me please, one more drink
Could you make it strong
'Cause I don't need to think
She broke my heart
My grace is gone
Another drink and I'll move on
One more drink and I'll move on

You think of things impossible
Then the sun refuse to shine
I walk with you beside me
Your cold hand lay in mine

Excuse me please, one more drink
Could you make it strong
'Cause I don't need to think
She broke my heart
My grace is gone
Another drink and I'll go

Excuse me please, one more drink
Could you make it strong
'Cause I, I don't need to think
She broke my heart
My grace is gone

Another drink and I'll move on
One more drink, my grace is gone
One more drink and my grace is gone

Like most olds on this board, I’ve probably had 10 or so true girlfriends and a few more casual relations. But my first love at the age of 16, which is mow 30 years ago, fucked me over bad.  I still don’t forgive her. I’ve lived in several of the most prominent cities in the country while she’s basically a lonely single stuck in a tiny Texas town.  Our favorite musician was George strait.  Every time he comes on I either laugh because I “won” or I get pretty angry.

as for auld Lang syne, idk why it gets me emotional.  I guess because it forces me to reflect on the hood and bad of life

That’s a really great soundtrack. I’m a big Mark Knopfler fan, and finally got to see him a few years ago at Moody Theater. He ended his encore set with Going Home. It was really great and made me choke up a bit.

I’d call you a huge pussy. But most of us have had those experiences, those that can make us cringe 30 years later when we think about how dramatically heartsick we were over teen “love,” and how the dumbest songs can transport us back in time.

I can’t hear Rod Stewart’s Broken Arrow without having some of those memories.

My wife died of a rare, virulent cancer in January of 2021. It happened so fast, and I’m still a wreck.
This Moody Blues song says what I feel every day - “Cause you’re not here.”
I don’t know why I’m even telling this to a bunch of strangers, but, there it is.
“Forever Autumn”

Sorry to hear about your wife. My condolences.

That’s a good tune.

Well my first love was a real bitch and I still have ill feelings towards her and again, I've had plenty of relationships but that one takes the cake.

You summed it up. They're so stupid and cringey, and yet I remember laying in bed heart sick over this girl. It's ridiculous
