We have a goalie package where Casey Thompson runs wildcat for one play so that "both will play"

That isn't wildcat.

I mean - I guess it could be if you're lining Casey up somewhere else. Not sure if that's what you meant.

I’ll eat crow if I’m wrong but I think we’re gonna skullfuck this team tbh. ULL is not as good as people are making them out to be. They had like 5 or 6 one score games last season including an overtime win over GaSt. I’m much more worried about the piggies tbh

I'm with you there. Not saying ULL can't/won't beat us because they absolutely can. But if I pick which non-con game would be our most likely to lose it would be piggy due to the fact that game is a true road game, and Arkansas has better players on paper than ULL.

I really hope the boys come ready to play. We can not over look this team. If the guys look ahead to the piggies we will be starting the season 0-1 just like the team in Ames did just last year to this squad

Yes, but how did Louisiana do against Iowa State last year? If only someone around here could give us the answer that question. It holds the key to everything.

Enough to win I guess. I really don’t want to take anything away from that win but their QB was 13/21 for like 150 yds or something like that. Iowa St was just played a horrible game.

A TEXAS WIN WOULD …

  • Be Texas' 924th victory all-time, keeping UT as the fourth-winningest program in college football history.
  • Give Steve Sarkisian his 47th victory as a head coach and first at The University of Texas.
  • Improve UT's ledger in season openers to 106-20-3.

THE SARKISIAN ERA BEGINS

  • Steve Sarkisian was named the 31st Head Football Coach at The University of Texas on January 2, 2021. In the past two seasons the as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama, Sarkisian was the architect of 24 straight games in which the Crimson Tide's offense scored 35 or more points, the longest streak in major college football history.
  • Despite coming up just short of the 35-point mark in a 31-14 win over Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinals, the victory propelled Alabama to the National Championship Game where they defeated No. 3 Ohio State, 52-24.
  • Sarkisian went on to be named the 2020 Broyles Award winner as the best assistant coach in college football.
  • Last season, Alabama's offense ranked second in the nation in scoring and led all Power 5 schools with 48.5 points per game, which set a school record and included five 50-point games against Southeastern Conference competition.
  • The Crimson Tide became the first team in SEC history to record five such games in a single season in conference play. The Tide followed that by posting 52 points against Florida in the 2020 SEC Championship to earn the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff. They later matched that total in the National Championship Game.
  • The Alabama offense under Sarkisian produced a Heisman Trophy winner, two Heisman finalists, a Doak Walker Award winner and a Joe Moore Award winning offensive line.
  • Sarkisian has previously served as the head coach at Washington and USC.

CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE

  • All totaled among the 10 assistant coaches and director of football performance who were hired to form Steve Sarkisian's staff, there are a combined 234 years of coaching experience, including 200 years in collegiate coaching, 101 bowl games, 11 CFP playoff games and seven National Championship Games, and they have won six of those.

WHAT RETURNS IN 2021

  • The Longhorns will have a new starting quarterback this season with redshirt freshman getting the start on Saturday against the Ragin' Cajuns. Card appeared in two games as a true freshman last season, seeing action in the season-opening win against UTEP while also taking snaps in the Alamo Bowl victory over Colorado.
  • Texas returns its top two rushers from 2020 with the duo of Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson combining for 1,121 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns on 166 carries (6.75 ypc). The 1,121 yards represent 57.4 percent of the team's rushing output last season.
  • Joshua Moore returns as the Longhorns leading receiver last year in receptions (30), yards (472), touchdowns (9). Despite playing in only five games last year, Jordan Whittington collected 21 receptions for 206 yards. When healthy, his 4.2 receptions per game led the team.
  • The tight end position will return its top two pass catchers in Cade Brewer (15-169-2) and Jared Wiley (9-166-1). Wiley's 18.4 yards per reception were second on the team among receivers with more than five receptions.
  • Texas loses four of its top five tacklers from a year ago, with LB DeMarvion Overshown being the leading returner with 60 tackles, however the next seven leading tacklers outside of the top five all return, included as part of 11 of the next 12.
  • Overshown is also the leading returner in tackles for loss with eight, quarterback pressures with four, interceptions with two, forced fumbles with two and pass breakups with seven.
  • Five other players who intercepted a pass last season return, including Chris Adimora, Jerrin Thompson, Alfred Collins, David Gbenda and Josh Thompson.
  • Six players are back who had at least three pass breakups including DeMarvion Overshown (7), D'Shawn Jamison (6), Chris Adimora (3), Josh Thompson (3), B.J. Foster (3) and Alfred Collins (3).
  • Along the defensive line, five players come back who had at least 2.5 tackles for loss last year with Keondre Coburn and T'Vondre Sweat leading the way with 3.5 each, followed by Moro Ojomo, Alfred Collins and Jacoby Jones with 2.5.
  • The Longhorns return their primary kicker in Cameron Dicker (15-21 FG), primary punter in Ryan Bujcevski, deep snapper Justin Mader and return specialist D'Shawn Jamison. Dicker also took over the punting duties following a late season injury to Bujcevski.

CAMPBELL-WILLIAMS FIELD RECOGNIATION

  • At the request of the Jamail family, Joe Jamail Field was renamed in 2020 in honor of Longhorn Legends and Heisman Trophy winners Earl Campbell (1974-77) and Ricky Williams (1995-98).
  • Campbell, the famed "Tyler Rose," holds a special place in The University of Texas and state of Texas' football history. As a senior at UT in 1977, Campbell became the first Longhorn to win the Heisman Trophy after he rushed for 1,744 yards – a Southwest Conference record that stood for 16 years – and 19 touchdowns. He led the nation in rushing and scoring, and posted a pair of 200-yard games on the road against Texas A&M (222 yards) and SMU (213 yards). Campbell also set a Texas record for 100-yard rushing games that season (10).
  • Williams, a San Diego native, completed his UT career with 21 NCAA and 46 school records under his name en route to becoming Texas' second Heisman Trophy winner in 1998. He was a three-time first-team all-conference pick, a two-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and only the second player to twice win the Doak Walker Award (nation's top running back). Williams' career culminated in his final home game, on the field now named in his honor, when he surpassed Tony Dorsett's 22-year-old NCAA rushing record.
  • The field at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium was originally named after Joe Jamail in 1997 to honor the lifelong Longhorn's immense contributions to The University of Texas' athletic department.
  • An on-field ceremony will take place during pregame at approximately 3:25 p.m. with Campbell, Williams, UT President Jay Hartezll and UT Vice President and Athletic Director Chris Del Conte.

I keep thinking of what Scipio has been going on about all offseason, that ULL beat ISU last year by press man coverage on the outside. Our receivers under Herman were terrible about getting off the jam at the line. I expect them to have better coaching and Sark to scheme them away from jams through motion, but combined with the new QB it gives me pause about how effective out offense will be on Saturday.

You answered your own question, imo.

Herman wanted to run our offense down their throats, which too often meant not taking easy solutions to what defenses were trying to do (oddly, the notable exception is the Georgia bowl where he pretty brilliantly punished their early aggression on the line).

If you've watched Sark's clinic that has been posted here a few times, you know he's responsive to how a defense is trying to stop us, and will use whatever the best offensive approach is rather than trying to overpower defenses by running right at them.

That doesn't guarantee success, but it makes me feel a lot better than Herman's stubborn approach.

I agree with all that and that’s why I ultimately predicted a 2 TD win for us. If their upset over ISU last year hadn’t happened and Herman was still the coach, this game would be much more of a trap, but I am confident Sark will figure them out and put our better talent in position to win. There should be a bunch of trendy upset picks going into this game that will give the staff bulletin board material that keeps the players from getting overconfident and playing with a chip on their shoulders.

Yeah, this would be a nightmare matchup if Herman were still here. Press man corners and a 350 lb NT to clog up inside zone. We’d be looking at a likely loss because Herman would play right into their hands.  This game is going to be a great opportunity for PK and Sark to show us they’re actual coaches, unlike the various shit stews we’ve been served over the last ten years.

So Herman was Mensa smart but too stubborn to make rational decisions.  Seriously devalues the whole I’m smarter than everyone else thing.  I’ll take the coach that can make timely in game decisions not some dork that quotes Of Mice and Men during his press conference.

This game will hinge on Card and the WRs. They are going to put 8 in the box every play and try and limit our running. They have a legit coach as well. I dont see us winning by more than 7-8 points.

If they do that,  Sarks play calling,  and the rest of out offense are good enough to punish them.

Does Louisiana DB's have the speed/ability to cover guys like Moore/Worthy?

Their DBs are a team strength, perhaps their best position group, but yes this is a major question that we probably won't find out until the game starts, and probably depends more on our wr's abilities than their DBs

Main things I'm looking for:

1) We feed a RB if they are on a roll and don't swap him out, unless the guy taps himself out

2) Passes the ball over the middle to a WR who is actually moving (open would be nice too, but baby steps)

3) Defensive that limits the number of wide open WRs running across the middle (subjective number, but we'll know it when we see it)

4) a blitz that actually works

I'll consider 3 of 4 to personally be a "we're heading in the right direction with the right guys" first game

I think he's behind Davis too. 5th string. Though it might be different considering Texas is likely in 12 personnel. I think Wiley and Helm are the Y's, with Brewer, Davis, and Sanders at the H. I see all 5 guys playing on Saturday.

I think they are going to be good in the sense that will likely run the table after we beat the brakes off of them. I think they could beat the lower half of the Big 12 teams like Tech, Baylor, KU, and give KSU everything they wanted in a close game. If Texas is a Top 3 team in the Big12 then this game should be over sometime in the 3Q.

If they do this, we better gouge them for 7 yards per run until they start dropping their safeties. If we can’t, then it’s gonna be a loooooong season.

They are a good, solid team and return iirc 10 starters. This isn't Nicholls.

This is a ranked team that played Coastal well and beat Iowa State handily last year. Billy Napier will be a first call for open positions next year. They will punch our lights out if we let them.

Hence, let them. They know how to finish games but the talent isn't there. If we are tuned up we shouldn't worry too much but any slop and its gonna get messy.

The only team Louisiana Lafayette 'punched the lights out' on last year was Louisiana Monroe.  They had 6 wins by one score or less.  They beat Iowa St off of two special teams scores and two turnovers - they had 270 total yards of offense against Iowa St.  They couldn't stop the run last year and that is by far Texas biggest strength on offense.

Napier deserves respect for the job he has done - but this is Louisiana Lafayette.

Sorry, I should have worded more clear. We have a tendency to play sloppy. Hopefully Sark has that clamped and there nothing there to worry. If not ULL, while being talent wise inferior, seems to have a decent ability off profiting off opponents mistakes.

IMO, we win with a C game. B game = 10pt+ victory, and A game is a blowout
