Just got back last week from 1 night at the end of a road trip.  Had a chill dinner at Tune-in Cafe near our Airbnb.  Breakfast at Horseman's, wussed out on the level two Burrito this time, but it was still spicy as hell and delicious.  Meow Wolf is legit, and very popular. We went at 10am and there was already a long line, but it was a great way to spend 3 hours.

Left for Chaco after that and camped there for 2 nights. Star party/night photography lesson was really great, as was the entire place and experience.  Make sure you hike up the canyon from Pueblo Bonito.

I'm in Santa Fe this week. Had dinner last night at Sazon for the wife's bday. Wow, was it ever good, and the atmosphere and service were awesome. For me, top 4 in SF are Sazon, Radish & Rye, Geronimo's, and Trattoria a Mano.

Also had a burger at the Bang Bite trailer attached to the brewery/distellery Tumbleroot. I think their burgers can make you forget about Bite Cafe. Also had some excellent beer and the wife had a tasty mixed beverage there.

Finally, I need to remind you peeps to pick up a breakfast burrito at El Chile Toreado.  Get the mixed (sausage, bacon, chorizo) or just the chorizo. Cooked to perfection.

Bump. Looks like the wife's schooling is going to be taking us out to Santa Fe for at least 18 months, come August. We're going to check out the city over a long weekend over spring break. Would it be worth doing a day of skiing? I have no idea what Ski SF is like, but I've only ever skied twice so I'm not too picky. I can't wait to spend all summer hiking and all winter skiing for a couple years.

Definitely ski.  They've had good snow this year.

You'll have a good two years.  Take up fly fishing as there are dozens of great small streams within a two hour drive of Santa Fe.

We're here now and have had a great time skiing the last few days. Very small mountain but only 30 minutes from town and not too crowded especially for spring break. Snow is great right now. Have also enjoyed Pasquale's for breakfast and foundation burger for quick after ski stop. Staying at inn at Loretta which is easy and convenient and relatively cheap. Love roaming around the plaza and other areas. Have done meow wolf in the past and loved it. Hoping to hit up brewery after skiing and 10000 waves soak tomorrow. Also did easy morning trip to national park with crazy coned rock structures. It's an easy hike for kids. Santa Fe is really a great kids town. Our 6 and 7 year old love it.

I was really excited to move out here in August, but just a couple weeks before I put in my notice for work, the wife's clinical site was discontinued. So skiing, hiking and fly fishing will have to be put on hold at least til the end of next year. I'm glad we got to make the trip up there for a few days last month, but damn... time to settle back into fort worth for the next 20+ months. Hopefully the mountains await me somewhere in 2021.

Medical offices in Santa Fe seem to have a hard time recruiting and keeping medical staff. From what I've been told most don't pay all that well and a lot of staff drives in from Albuquerque. Christus in particular sucks. That drive would get old, quick.

My first and only migas sighting in Santa Fe at Cafe Fina. It's a pretty drive, about 7 miles away from downtown SF. On the weekend they have breakfast all day.

Breakfast at La Plazuela in the La Fonda, sunset drinks at the Rooftop Bar....dinner at the Bull Ring arriving by pedicab if staying near the Plaza.

Do a Loretto Line trolly tour at least once.

Question.....heading to Santa Fe this weekend sort of last minute.

The lady friend wants to treat me for my birthday on Saturday but Geronimo looks booked. Any recommendations for a nice, memorable meal but not ultra fancy and through the roof prices? Many thanks....

Posted

Well, yeah- basically any place that's been suggested in the first two pages of this thread.  Just google the menu and see if it's something you'd like.

Sometimes it's like I'm playing cards with my brother's kids.

If not ultra fancy and through the roof prices is what you're looking for, i'm not sure Geronimo would have fit the bill anyway.

Sazon is really good. I don’t remember the price, but I don’t recall it being as expensive as Geronimo.

La Choza.

I'd second Sazon. Also highly recommend Radish and Rye. If you're having trouble getting reservations, Loyal Hound would be one of my suggestions for a non-tourist destination, or their sister restaurant Arable. Both are away from the downtown area though.  You can eat at the bar at either Sazon or Radish and Rye. Or even Geronimo, for that matter, if you want to try that and have back-up plan if they're full.

edit: you might check out Pasqual's for dinner too. Or Joseph's.

This is what I was thinking also. Even though Santa Fe is pretty casual Geronimo is still a dressy kinda place and fairly expensive. Pretty sure the Elk loin is around $40. be hard to get out of there for 2 for under $300 with a couple cocktails, couple courses each and a bottle of wine. nearly impossible with tip.

FWIW, Geronimo bar menu has a flat iron steak, green chile mac&cheese, and sliders...I don't think anything is over $20. They also can sometime take walk-ins in the restaurant...it's on the fancier side but for the quality of their food and service I feel like it's a bargain relative to what you'd find at many  very average upscale restaurants in Dallas, LA or NY. (edit: and just to be clear, it's a world class restaurant. And you can order from the full menu in the bar.)

A breakfast place that we enjoyed very much is the Horseman's Haven.  Shag suggested it to me years ago.  Looks like a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, had a no-frills, no-bullshit waitress, but it was probably the best breakfast burrito I've ever had in my life.

Posted (edited)

Yeah, Tomasita's is excellent. Also very convenient location. The Shed or (its sister) La Choza are great too and they take reservations if you call. Horseman's Haven unfortunately changed ownership or maybe just management about 2 years ago right before I bought a house here. I've given it a couple chances but have been underwhelmed both times. It's one of just 2 restaurants in Santa Fe where I've been disappointed, the other being Red Enchilada (edit: Cowgirl bbq and Whole Hog Cafe are hit and miss). The service here often requires a lot of patience (except at the high-end places) but the food is generally excellent.

Well, hell.  We were there about 5 years ago, and were thinking about stopping there again later this summer.  Thanks for the heads-up.

You might give Cafe Castro a shot. It's also on Cerillos, family owned and operated, just a little closer to town. Los Amigos also. I hate to tell you that about Horseman's because it certainly remains popular.

I went to Santa Fe for Christmas and had an amazing time. The two restaurants that I would absolutely recommend to anyone are Sazon and Pasquals. Both were delicious and neither was crazy expensive. Meowwolf was also very interesting. We spent four hours there and enjoyed every minute of it. I will say that I thought Maria's was only OK, a lot of the food was pretty bland to me. Jambo was hit or miss. Their black bean curry soup was phenomenal but the goat stew was inedible.  The Drury Inn is nothing fancy, but clean and well run, and it's right off the square and the price is right. They have free breakfast and free happy hour too.

Thank yous to everyone in this thread who pointed me in the right direction.

Another extremely excellent old dive is Sunrise Cafe on St Michaels Dr. Unfortunately they're only open for breakfast and lunch. And I'd reiterate my love for a trailer, located around the corner from Whole Foods, El Chile Toreado. Unreal breakfast burritos and great tacos, and run by some really great people.

Clafoutis is amazing. Especially coming from Austin which has zero good bakeries. Clafoutis seems world class to me. There's nothing else as grand in town but other bakeries/cafes you might try are

Sage Bakehouse - owner moved here from Dallas and makes amazing breads and croissants. Coffee too. Worth it just to walk in and take in the sights and smells. Highly recommend the almond croissant.

Madame Matisse - small cafe and bakery that just opened a couple months ago. On Cerillos. Their sandwiches, onion soup and baked goods are excellent, though not a huge selection. Also, inventive salads.

Dolina - a woman who moved here from Slovakia owns this place on N. Guadalupe right next to Blakes Lotaburger. Many baked goods from her heritage, plus a modern european breakfast and lunch menu. I forget what they're called but the nut cookies with a fruit middle are amazing. So too the sour cream coffee cake.

Perhaps there’s another guy available. Does he have to be Native American?

Found more migas on the breakfast menu at Valentina's.

Also hopefully before the end of 2019 Bosque Brewery from abq is opening a tasting room at the railyard. Love their beer so this has me pretty damn excited. Right across from the Violet Crown cinema.

When you're heading out to hike, you can get tacos and burritos for cheap at El Parasol -- a couple of locations on different edges of town - there's one in Pojoaque right before the turnoff to Bandelier.

Stopped at El Parasol for lunch after Bandelier yesterday. The carne adovado burrito was fanfuckingtastic. One of my kids got the burger and that may have been the best Mexican joint burger I’ve ever tasted...and those in the know, know that’s a high goddamn bar. I took a couple of bites and almost got one to go for later.

The pictures of hot dogs in the northern europe thread seemed popular so I thought I'd post pics of Santa Fe trailer food. Burritos, tacos and hot dogs from El Chile Toreado.

First are carne deshebrada tacos (slow-cooked, braised beef). 4 to an order for $8.

Second and 3rd pics are the mixed (eggs, potato, cheese, bacon, sausage, chorizo) breakfast burrito with green chile.

4th pic is the polish dog, a spicy sausage split and charred, served with pintos, cheese, green chile, and marinated onions. You can add carne asada to it for a dollar more.

Heading here in March. What casino would someone recommend for Blackjack with the wife? Staying near the Plaza.

Buffalo Thunder is probably your best bet in SF.  It's about 15-20 minutes north of town.  It's not Vegas but it'll have all the games you would expect and it has the best facilities. Also, be aware that it's strictly no alcohol on casino floors in NM.

Tesuque Casino is right by the SF Opera, just opened within the past few months, and while I've not been I've heard good things. Unlike Buffalo Thunder, they don't have a hotel attached though.

my one and only problem with this is you're drinking a flavored soda.  wtf?   what's wrong with beer?  it'd be much cooler if you did.

I am not cool. But there was tequila and a twist of lime with the fresca. At lunch anyway lol.

Heading to SF for a few days next week. It's going to be cold so no patio weather is a bummer but we'll be hitting the slopes up mostly. Amy new spots worth mentioning?

Yes. Mampuku Ramen opened a couple months ago. They have a variety of very tasty broths and I've enjoyed 'em all, even the very non-traditional brisket with green chile was great. They have a shrimp wrapped in green chile tempura that is killer.

Uncle DT's BBQ, close to Meow Wolf, was a trailer, now he has a brick and mortar that just opened a couple weeks ago. Owner did some apprentice time at Black's. We don't have oak here though so he uses pecan, I think.

Santa Fe Brewing has a recently opened tap room they call the Brakeroom a half block from the Capitol (Roundhouse).

If you need a shitload of wings there's a new Wing Stop on the south side of town.

A greek place called Yamas Greek Rotisserie just opened a few weeks ago and while I haven't been I've heard very good things.

The mixed breakfast burrito at El Chile Toreado is still my favorite food in town. Their quesadillas are also amazing esp if you top it with condiments from their salsa bar. It's a food truck near Whole Foods.

There's a new taqueria dive place on Cerillos called La Piña Loka and their steak and shrimp tacos with green salsa are great  https://www.santafenewmexican.com/life/taste/at-new-la-pi-a-loka-small-space-delivers-big/article_ace1dc36-36ff-11ea-8636-af490dcbffb9.html

Meow Wolf has a ton of concerts on their calendar this year (listed under events on their calendar) and it's a great intimate club if you see a band you like.

Also Sazon was closed for at least 6 months due to fire and just reopened. It or Geronimo is the best in town. Need reservations.

Piccolino is an out of the way, americanized italian, that is really, really good.

Raaga To Go is a very good indian place not far from the Plaza. They have a few seats inside, too. But Paper Dosa is tough to beat.
