The Watch Fanatic Thread

Picked this up to celebrate the arrival of my newborn 🙂 The Citizen Chronomaster AQ1000-58A. It's a feature-rich high-accuracy quartz watch that is Citizen's answer to the Grand Seiko SBGX line. Inside is Citizen's Calibre A010 Eco-Drive movement, accurate to ±5 sec./year (Grand Seiko's 9F movement is rated at ±10 sec./year). Up until a few years ago this was the most intrinsically accurate wristwatch on Earth, not counting radio/GPS/Bluetooth sync-ing watches that display time from an external source. Citizen recently released a newer 0100 calibre with ±1 sec./year accuracy that is significantly outside of my current budget 😅

It also has a perpetual calendar and independently-adjustable hour hand for time zone changes and DST. And it's a looker; Citizen uses the same sallaz polishing on the case, bezel, hands and indices as Grand Seiko does (and Casio for its MR-G line). This watch is stainless steel with Citizen's own scratch-resistant hardening coating on the case and bezel; some of the newer models in this line use Super Titanium instead. The Chronomaster line is JDM-only, but I got lucky with a Yahoo! Japan auction and managed to snag this at a great price.

Is that a power reserve indicator on a quartz watch?

Eco-Drive, so it's a solar quartz (one of the advantages of Citizen's A010 over Grand Seiko's 9F, in my opinion). The power reserve indicator shows the level of charge. The movement lasts 7 months on a full charge and has a power-saving function that can extend it to 1½ years.

Citizen has two versions of their ±5 sec./year solar HAQ movement, the A010 (with power reserve indicator) and A060 (without power reserve indicator). Both are used across the Chronomaster line.

So basically, you're a vampire who goes 7 months without seeing the sun?

I mean it LOOKS cool, but seriously, how long will it take to fully charge a solar-quartz battery/capacitor? 5 minutes in direct sunlight?

If you wear it outdoor for at least a few minutes a week, that power reserve will be stuck at full. Might as well just make it an appliqué on the dial.

Interesting I got a notification on this thread. So I sent it in to get serviced and they called me about it today. The guy said “you have a fan favorite with this watch.” I said ok so it’s just common and everyone has one? He said “no no one here has ever seen this face before so it’s very rare”. Pretty cool to hear. It was a gift from my dad and I’ll never get rid of it

I live up north so it's good for the fall/winter months, when we don't get much sunlight and I'm usually wearing the watch under long sleeves. When the watch first came it needed several hours of direct sunlight to get to full charge. Having said that, it very much is an aesthetic choice in the end. The A060 movement lets you check the power reserve with a hidden recessed button instead of always displaying it on the dial.

Lots of Citizen, Seiko and Orient watches have power reserve indicators for their solar as well as automatic watches, so I can only guess it's considered more fashionable in Japan than elsewhere.

I'm kidding. Yeah, Citizen pioneered the solar watch. It's an attractive watch :).

I put this up over on the gun lovers thread but I am also a watch fanatic.

Cartier Santos - Stacatto CS24

President 118208 - custom 1911

Citizen Pro Diver- custom Gen 5 19

Love that two tone Santos. Kicking around the idea of going grey and picking one up.

I spend at least an hour or two a day scouring watch websites, forums, and dealers. I’ve seen no fewer than 1000 DJs in the last year since I got into watches, and I’ve never seen that dial

I wonder what it appeases at

Can someone tell me why 80s and 90s presidential’s are cheaper? Like 14-19k on bobs watches. Is it the movement?

I’m not an expert but they are less expensive because of bracelets/cases were not solid gold.  When Rolex  changed to 118 series there is a noticeable difference in weight.  Not sure about movement.  It may have been updated.  I have both and can only tell the difference in weight.

Quickset (early 80's) are a PITA to set the day/date if you aren't going to be wearing it regularly. The Double quick are a bit easier as you can adjust the date/day separately from adjusting the time so you aren't spending 5 minutes cranking through the days to set it after it's been sitting for a bit.

I looked at this and man it’s cool. I understand what I’m buying and I know that the value isn’t what a Rolex is or will become. I feel if you buy right you won’t lose too much. They made me a great offer and I called them back an hour later and they sold it 15 mins before I called. Another will come and I think I’m going after it. They had the older presidential and I wasn’t a fan

SēL Instrument Watches. Just incredible engineering. Hopefully if you went to Hours + Minutes, you stopped by and talked with Andrew. Not sure there a better engineered watch out there. Seriously, badass.

The Omni Diver MkII is pretty giant at 46mm, but is tested to 10,000 meters. The new Xos 42 is a more manageable size at 42mm, and probably the one I'll end up getting. The FTX field watch is great as well, but that Xos has my name on it.2024_1117_13335700.jpg2024_1117_13255000.jpg2024_1117_13363200.jpg2024_1117_13260200.jpg

My 60s oyster perpetual manual wind died.

The seconds hand wont move if the crown is in screwed position.  Itll move if crown is in adjustment position and theres slight pressure in the forward direction.

Is this common mode of failure? Easy fix or am i looking at $1k for this?
