Agree to disagree.  For a part of the watch you don't see much, I like being able to see the working of the guts when taking on/off.  Is one of the things I don't like about my Datejust and my Breitling - the others have sapphire casebacks which i love.

I guess this attitude is why they do it, but it's a cheap trend IMHO and sentiments like this essentially let companies off the hook for charging more and providing less.

It's like seeing a Porsche 911 with a transparent hood and expecting Honda Civics to have them as well.

Especially since there's nothing under the 911's hood 🤷‍♂️

I was supposed to inherit one of these from my uncle. This is a pre Tag model Heuer.  I remember my uncle keeping time on soccer matches with one of these while I was still in school in Germany in the mid 60’s. Fell in love with it the minute I saw it. Drunk ass aunt sent me a fucking Seiko when he passed.
I was going to just go out and buy one for myself, but passed when I saw what they go for.

I was probably about 30 years old at the time. And for reasons I can’t explain It was one of those times in life where something disappoints you to such a degree it sort of numbs you. Only later do you go through the “I should have said” exercise. It floored me that she pulled that shit. I was the only nephew he had. And we were great friends as well. She would pass a few years later and I have no idea what came of the watch. I did get some of his war memorabilia, and his war time bible. Which I hold in high regard. But, I would be lying if I didn’t admit I wanted that watch more than anything.

Whats the backstory of Snoopy on the dial?

Timex makes a lot of Snoopy watches, they (along with Seiko, Swatch, and a few other brands) have a marketing collaboration with the Peanuts comic: https://timex.com/collections/timex-x-peanuts-watches

Quote

Since 1950, Snoopy and the rest of Charles Schulz’s iconic Peanuts characters have graced newspaper pages across the nation. And for almost as long, the gang has teamed up with Timex for special-edition Timex x Peanuts watch collaborations, bringing a playfulness to the wrist like few brands can.

Our first Peanuts watches were introduced back in 1969, and in the decades since, Woodstock, Charlie Brown, and everyone’s favorite beagle have all found their way across numerous Timex x Peanuts watches. To mark the platinum anniversary of this treasured franchise hitting the papers some 70 years prior, we even celebrated Snoopy and the Peanuts gang with the special release of some of our most iconic modern watches—the Q Timex 1979 Reissue, the Marlin Automatic, and two iterations of our Timex Standard.

Nostalgic, cheerful, and beloved by casual wearers and knowledgeable collectors alike, our Timex x Peanuts watches have been worn throughout the decades. Whether you grew up reading the Sunday funnies or watching the holiday-themed specials on TV, our collaborative collection is guaranteed to have a fun and functional style you’ll love for years to come.

Picked this up to celebrate the arrival of my newborn 🙂 The Citizen Chronomaster AQ1000-58A. It's a feature-rich high-accuracy quartz watch that is Citizen's answer to the Grand Seiko SBGX line. Inside is Citizen's Calibre A010 Eco-Drive movement, accurate to ±5 sec./year (Grand Seiko's 9F movement is rated at ±10 sec./year). Up until a few years ago this was the most intrinsically accurate wristwatch on Earth, not counting radio/GPS/Bluetooth sync-ing watches that display time from an external source. Citizen recently released a newer 0100 calibre with ±1 sec./year accuracy that is significantly outside of my current budget 😅

It also has a perpetual calendar and independently-adjustable hour hand for time zone changes and DST. And it's a looker; Citizen uses the same sallaz polishing on the case, bezel, hands and indices as Grand Seiko does (and Casio for its MR-G line). This watch is stainless steel with Citizen's own scratch-resistant hardening coating on the case and bezel; some of the newer models in this line use Super Titanium instead. The Chronomaster line is JDM-only, but I got lucky with a Yahoo! Japan auction and managed to snag this at a great price.

Update: After 16 weeks, the watch finally gained one second. With extrapolation on track for +3.25 sec./year, well within spec. No major fluctuations.

For comparison, my Seiko Prospex Speedtimer gained 19 seconds in that same time frame (+5.15 sec./month)

Carl F. Bucherer is gone. Rolex bought the 137-year old company in 2023 and shut it down just over a year later.

Tim Jeffreys: Rolex Is Shutting Down Carl F. Bucherer

Quote

Today, news broke via Bilanz and Handelszeitung that Rolex is shutting down the Carl F. Bucherer brand. This follows the 2023 acquisition of Bucherer AG by Rolex, and it comes as a sudden end for the longstanding brand. Rolex's decision to shutter the less-than-profitable brand, despite the company's considerable 137–year history, comes as a shock for many (perhaps aside from those with an eye on the balance sheet) and underlines Rolex's focus on the functioning elements of the Bucherer business.

From its founding in 1888 until its sale to Rolex in 2023, the company was owned by the Bucherer family, making it one of the oldest luxury Swiss watchmakers continuously held by the founding family. Business metrics and forecasting aside, for the landscape of legacy Swiss watch brands – it's the end of an era. Carl F. Bucherer is a brand we at Hodinkee have certainly enjoyed over the years, and we even made a lovely (and perhaps now even more collectible) limited edition Worltimer with the brand just last summer. Employees were informed of the decision this morning. As for the product and retail environments, Carl F. Bucherer was present in around 250 stores, 50 operated by Bucherer or its US subsidiary Tourneau, which will slowly be phased out or swapped with other brands.

Lulz.  Nobody over the age of 16 should wear a timepiece with your college logo on it.  That shit is for shirts and caps, not fine timepieces worn by gentlemen.

Morgan Stanley Swiss Watch Industry Report for 2024 was just released, and the numbers do not look good: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/fashion/watch-prices-increase-patek-philippe.html

ROLEX

Rolex sales dropped from 1.24 million units in 2023 to 1.18 million in 2024.

Tudor sales dropped from 255K in 2023 to just 160K in 2024. Their sales have dropped 44% since 2021.

SWATCH

Omega sales dropped from 570K units to 505K in 2024. Longines sales dropped from 1.6 million units to just 950K in 2024, a major 40% drop.

Blancpain, Rado, Breguet, Hamilton and Mido all suffered sharp sales declines. The NYT article speculates that Swatch Group has been hit the hardest by the rise of Chinese brands in the entry-level luxury watch market. This is after Swatch had seen a sharp rise in sales in 2023 due to the Moonswatch, which they couldn't maintain in 2024 with the Blancpain collab. Tissot saw sales drop from 3.1 million units to 2.5 million.

RICHEMONT

Cartier was one of the few brands that enjoyed increased sales in 2024, from 660K to 680K. VC, IWC and JLC all saw sales drops.

INDEPENDENTS

...did pretty well actually. AP, Patek, F.P. Journe and Richard Mille all saw sales increases last year.

Recommend me some watches that scratch the luxury itch - vintage is okay too - that fly under the radar and are reasonable. Thinking a watch as a primary in a place like Mexico. Pretty sure my Rolex yacht master may collect dust if we move.  Previously I was eyeing vintage omegas with a simple white or eggshell linen face. I lean gender neutral / tomboy on watches though I’ll eventually get at least one feminine style for special occasions.

Go for a King Seiko. Vintage watches with gender-neutral sizing (36-39mm) at less than $2K.

If you want a busier dial look at the Tudor 1926 in 36mm

Cartier Tank?

Have you considered older Cartier? Something like a Santos Galbée would fly under radar and has a quartz movement that should be relatively easy to service.

older Cartier is definitely the kind of feminine watch I'm talking about!  and quite frankly a cartier and flannel - that's my style!!! but I do need that gender neutral look. or maybe just say fuck it and go all in with a chick watch. nah, I have a better solution.... why not both?

y'all really think a cartier tank with a gold or silver/gold bracelet flies under the radar?

I think I need a leather band understated watch and a cartier tank I've decided - maybe the latter will make me appear to be 25-30 years old, haha.

this one is only $3k

Neg on the Cartier Tank if only because it seems like every woman I know has one, save for Mrs. Laz who refuses to give up the c.1997 Quartz Guess watch.

My vote is for a birth year Tudor Princess

but for real my Mexican friends said to leave the watches at home

Yeah my wife is like “I keep telling you an Apple Watch at most, otherwise you’re a target.” And she’s not even sure about that. No jewelry, trade down the engagement / wedding ring, no bling at all.  I has a sad.
