Welp, I pulled the trigger yesterday.  These pictures are shit, but this watch is a stunner.  I had an isofrane on my SKX and didn't fully appreciate how much larger that made the watch wear.  This feels very comfortable and doesn't seem to wear as big as the 007.  The guy from WUS was very nice and knowledgeable about everything on this watch and just watches in general.  Totally painless process that allowed me to purchase much more watch than if I'd been buying new.

Thanks for all of the advice and thoughts.

Right before the crash of '07 I was getting ready to pull the trigger on pretty much that very watch. After everything went down, I just couldn't bring myself to drop the bucks for one (college tuition for the daughter seemed the more prudent thing at the time).   I'd just bought a Chopard Gran Tourismo XL in Vegas in early '07 though, that was fun....

I'd been averaging a new watch every 6-8 months for about 3-4 years running. I kinda changed my perspective. If I get a watch in that price category again it'll be that very watch or a Glaschutte original.  I've been looking at watches in the $1,000 range since then, but only pulled the trigger 2 x .

From what I have been reading on other forums there is a distinct shortage of Rolex sports models. Apparently most dealers have Datejusts and other similar. On the other hand I haven't liked many of the Rolex line in last few years - too big and too much added bling. Very happy with my older Sub

I would like to see the new Sea dweller in person...there’s no way I “upgrade” from my 2016 ceramic that I like better, but I want to see it.

Still haven’t found a dealer with one and Bernard is still getting a couple grand over retail when they find one.

The new Seadweller is fantastic in person.  But the 4000 is no slouch either.  That one will only appreciate after it was in production for such a relatively short time.

I’ll tell you what you will see. If you’re a long time owner of Sub’s, SD and/or the DSSD you will ask yourself WTF.

I have examples of all of these and some of the changes are nothing more then “what the fuck Rolex?” marketing ploys. Which I have knowingly gone along with for years because I like the brand (so much so I dropped the $20 on the black face Daytona simply because it looks like a Sub). And as a collector I enjoy having an example of each model. But, with this release it is getting to the point where it feels like I’m literally buying the same damn watch. Here are just a few of my complaints of this “new” model.

Installing the caliber 3235 into the housing. Though this may be technically an improvement. It suggests that either the 3135 was in some way inferior (it was not, based on my own experience). Or they changed it just to change it (this sounds about right). Then they enlarged the case to make closer in size to that of the DSSD (again, WTF, just buy the fucking DS). Increased its depth by a few meters (yet ironically keeps its depth limit closer to that of the older (by what four years?) SD then the DSSD) so again WTF? And raised the MSRP to $11, which again brings it closer to the DSSD (at $12) then its brother the DS at $8. And widened the bracelet. Which they had to do because it would have looked fucked up with the loggerhead case on the thin bracelet.

And lastly they changed the lettering from the standard white to red logo on the face, which screams money grab. Because anyone who collects vintage Rolex’s is familiar with the premium the seldom seen cross color ID (i.e. A Sub with red letters opposed to white) can bring if they have provenance.

All of this appears to be nothing more then a shell game of components to increase the number of models in their line that ultimately have their DNA tied directly back to the oringnal 1953 Sub. And as someone who has examples going back to the days when one could simply walk in the door and commission a watch directly from the factory. This new approach, along with holding inventory back from their AD’s to artificially impact availability (like how they handled the release of the Daytona) is a poor move made by a company who traditionally did not do business this way.

So I have an old Omega "Pie Pan" Constellation I might end up selling since it just sits in my closet with my cufflinks, collar stays, etc.

What's typically the best way to sell something like this? Enthusiast forums? Ebay? Watch store/pawn shop? TYIA.

Thanks, I think this could cut two ways for me. On one hand, they can be utter geek headed tools that might be a PITA to deal with. On the other hand, the watch was refurbished by a well-known refurbisher of old Omegas and has paperwork on what was touched up, how the vast majority of it is original, how the numbers match, etc. and I could ride to coattails of the refurbisher...

Like I said they're uber geeks, but the most knowledgeable watch uber geeks out there. The mods are super uber geeks, but again they know their shit. Each watch brand room has its own mod so some are a bit more loose than others, but it's a serious site for serious collectors.

If ya know the rules don't break em. A guy named Michael used to be the head mod, he's a stuff shirt I wouldn't ever wanna have a beer with, but his personal collection is one of the finest I've ever seen.

Took my submariner in for a regulation yesterday.  I hate it when ADs say they don’t do anything to Rolex. They send it off to Rolex to have anything whatsoever done to it.

if you’re in Houston, I highly highly recommend Valobra’s fine jewelry for anything and everything watches. The guy is a badass and they will take care of you.

rolex is unashamedly and unabashedly a luxury goods company and as thus pricing is no longer tied to engineering, innovation, manufacturing, etc but purely scarcity and brand equity.  old game.. like AP... why bother designing new watches when you can re-release another royal oak variant

Ok how did you feel about the older SD being essentially a Sub without a cyclops?

Also I’m related to your handle.

I preferred it. The 116600 is my favorite of the SD line (and the version I own).

On the new one, I agree that the red lettering is pretty egregious, but it’s fine aesthetically.

it was $350 last week and I was about to buy it but decided to wait until I got back from vacation. Checked when I was on vacation and it was this price.

First time visiting the Houston store. I fought the urge and just had them clean mine. They told me they will have a tech full time by end of the year. They would be able to do in-house service (to an extent). Gasket replacements are free though.

Today is our 15th anniversary (watch, so say the keepers of anniversary gift rules), and my wife completely surprised me with this Sinn 910. I'd never seriously considering adding another nice watch to the 203 Arktis she got me several years ago, but she decided that our two boys need at least one watch each when I am dead.

Yes, dear.
