I feel like the best in no particular order were something like:

Belushi, Gilda, Eddie Murphy, Hartman, Farley, Ferrell, Molly Shannon, Kate McKinnon, Bill Murray, Dana Carvey, Jan Hooks and maybe throw in Hader, Samberg and Sandler plus Norm for Update.

Would be an interesting exercise to pick which singular skit is the best for each of the above. Not sure it would be possible. Hell, even agreeing on the best character for most would be futile.

My favorite Farley sketch was one I don't think I've seen since it aired in 1993. It was called Relapse Guy, and Lorne made sure all traces of it were erased from existence. Farley kept relapsing, causing increasingly terrible damage to himself and others. Now that I type it out, it probably hasn't aged well at all.

Another one like that, and maybe from the same episode, was a game show called Date Rape, where contestants had to judge whether date rape had happened or not. It was a different time.

The Relapse Guy

Is It Date Rape?

Hartman is the SNL GOAT for me - as multiple people have said, he elevated every skit he was involved with, either performing or writing.

He was also stellar on late-night appearances, especially Letterman. The 1994 appearance at 1h18m in this vid is my favorite. I am still legitimately sad we were deprived of many more years of him doing his thing.

Another good one that rarely gets replayed is the Tales of Little Women sketch where Farley falls through some ice

It’s hard. It’s either Belushi or Eddie.

I think it’s Eddie.

- Better movie career.

- One of the best stand ups of all time.

- More memorable sketches on SNL.

- Saved SNL at 19 years old without much help.

Arguable on the better dancer. Belushi had the better music career. The Blues Brothers started as a gag, but that was a real band by the time the movie came out.

Belushi has had the benefit of going out young.

The Farley-Belushi anecdotes are haunting. What a tortured kid.

yikes. Shannen Doherty was in both... were both those sketches in the same ep?? wow. that was some writer's room that week

Early 90s. When addiction and date rape were funny.

I think Eddie is the number 1.  He has to be. When he hosted in 2019, before COVID, it was so great. They should have him host once a year.

Without Eddie, the show would have ended in the 80s.

I tend to agree, if we're only going on what they contributed while on the cast. But I recognize that I'm more biased towards Hartman's work because I've seen more of it than I've seen of Eddie Murphy's, so I'm ready to admit that I'm wrong once I've sat down and seen as much of Murphy's SNL work as I've seen of Hartman's.
