I don't think I saw Darrell Hammond at all, which surprised me.

My favorite sketches:

  1. Scared Straight (Eddie Murphy had this sketch at a 10, then bringing in Will Ferrell? We're not worthy)
  2. Alien Abductees (Tons of guest talent but nobody upstaged anyone else)
  3. Robert Goulet (One of my all time favorite Ferrell characters)

Meryl Streep as the mom openly flirting with Pedro Pascal was great.

I thought the show was excellent. There were jokes early that the audience didn't laugh at but I definitely did. So great seeing all the old cast. Sir Paul closing things out was just fucking gold. I wasn't crying, it was that damned Mountain Cedar!

I really enjoyed it overall.  Some of the sketches dragged a bit, but overall thought the did a great job bringing them back at the end.  Tough to cram 50 years and 500 people into 1 show.

Interesting choice for Miley Cyrus to cover Nothing Compares To You.

ngl - I teared up as soon as I realized the song choice.  By the end I was laughing because Miley is so fucking dramatic.

Loved Sandler's song too.

She sounded like shit in the other skit she was in. Like had me wondering if that was part of the joke, her not being able to sing on key.

It absolutely was. Her voice is on point.

Pregnant Cecily Strong would get it.

I mean, she did. Obviously. But I'd give it to her some more.

Really enjoyed pretty much everything.

"This isn't my Captain America!" Caused me to fall off my couch.

I don't know whether anyone else noticed Chris Kattan in the audience, but he looked like a lobotomized zombie.

I noticed that too and looked up what was going on with him exactly. Apparently he broke his neck on the show in 2001 and has had a bunch of back and neck surgeries since. Makes that segment on his and other cast members doing prat falls a bit awkward.

Actual footage from when he broke his neck on the show...

Bro this is the 3rd sketch along these lines...first with Ariande, then Charlie X or whatever her name is, and then this one...all based on her Expresso song.  It's a long running bit now.

Wow - thanks for sharing. I also looked it up and couldn't find anything dispositive. I do specifically remember being disgusted by the abject uselessness of Google's search results though.

Variety has a piece on the notable absences:

- Carvey : flu

- Hader : “longstanding scheduling conflict”

- Aykroyd: “prior commitments,” but a lot of speculation he wasn’t given a big enough role in the special. Also he hates Chevy just as much as Bill Murray.

- Quinn: scheduled stand up performance in Raleigh, NC

- Dennis Miller: no reason given

Yeah, Eddie's imitation of Tracy Morgan standing next to Tracy Morgan was next level.

He sounded exactly like him.  It was a great show all around.

just finished with the concert special. absolutely fantastic. i can't believe i watched the entire thing.

i.fucking.LOVE.Jack.White.

For the most part I couldn't stand The White Stripes and his dime store approach to gear and tone, but I had definitely heard some pretty hooky songs from him over the years.  Then my daughter's band opened for him last November, and we got to watch from stage right maybe 10 feet away.  Holy shit he has a monster band full of great players, and it was really enjoyable.  Changed my mind about Jack for sure.

All in all this was an excellent weekend for long time SNL alums, hosts and fans. I've rewatched several of the parts of the concert and Sandler's 50 years song and just thoroughly enjoyed all of it. Makes me sad seeing some of our legends getting really old now. Murray balling at the end. Lorne obviously touched and somewhat speechless. I found and bought the 25th anniversary dvd just so I have it and can watch it. It made me think of and remember the weekends I would spend watching SNL when my cast was on there in middle school and high school in the early and mid-90s and talk about the big sketches in school on monday after rewatching them over and over again on VHS tapes with my brother and sister. It was honestly one of the best episodes of SNL ever and I'm glad they leaned in on a lot of the newer cast members and writers while acknowledging those from before them. I may go back and watch Robyn and David Byrne a few more times tonight when I get home.

Kattan's fiance is a fucking smoke-show but I think her politics would be problematic for me. Oh well ...

"My" favorite SNL was the group consisting of Hartman, Carvey, Hooks, Jackson, Lovitz, Nealon, Miller and then easing in with Myers and then Sandler/Farley/Spade.

I'm going to have to go back and watch all the ones with Ferrell because I wasn't really a fan of his until Old School. I know I missed a lot of great SNL during his years.

One of my all-time favorites with him. Takes a bit but so worth the payoff.

I died. It made me think back to 1983 when Eddie “showed” Stevie Wonder how to sing like Stevie Wonder.

I thought she and Brittany killed it on nothing compares. I was actually kind of expecting Miley to hold up a pic of Sinead.

Eddie could really sing. An album might not have worked, but he would have been good singing in movies.

Eddie put out three music albums. His first gave us this hit:

Was that Scared Straight skit the first with both Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell? I could make a good case they are 1 and 2 all time.

Hartman should be in the discussion.

I was making dinner at the time and couldn't see the tv, but could hear it.  Love me some unhinged Tracy Morgan so I took a break and wandered into the living room.  Instantly started cracking up without another word even being said, just seeing that Eddie was playing Tracy so clearly perfectly.

I think those would probably be my top three.

I mean if we're ranking them like we rank pro athletes. Norm will always be my personal favorite.

This was a singularly terrible song.  But Eddie was so big at the time, it didn't tank his career like it might have for a lesser person.

Written and produced by Rick James, no less…
