Wow, a state of Texas raised A&M basketball coach leaves for a basketball school that just had their coach quit because it’s an NIL mess there and a completely uncompetitive program. Buzz telling us he wanted out bad without telling us he wanted out bad.

And Joey Freshwater is a better drinking buddy than Elko.

It truly is not a surprise:

6 years at Marquette

5 years at Virginia Tech

6 years at aggy

Dude basically cycles through a 4 year class, give or take, and then dips out before he has to rebuild the roster.

I thought it was pretty well known (and maybe on record) that Buzz only stays at places for 6 years?

Because his schtick runs out and he doesn't want to rebuild?

I'd heard all year he would be out on the first thing smoking.  But this job certainly puts that to the test.

I wonder if Beard still has a bunch of buddies from his undergrad time here at Texas on a group chat. I bet that is a funny fucking read right now.

Interesting how much Beard's name is coming up for aggy HC opening... guess tech better lock down McCasland.

He wouldn’t leave for aggy. Tech is a better job

Quote

Maryland finalized a six-year deal to hire Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams on Tuesday, forcing the Aggies into a coaching search in the middle of college basketball’s transfer portal season. Williams has reached 11 NCAA tournaments in his career as a head coach, including the last three seasons in College Station.
Williams is 373-228 in his career. Texas A&M athletic director Trev Alberts will now hire his first men’s basketball coach for the Aggies. On3 is breaking down the candidates in the mix to replace Buzz Williams:
Chris Beard, Ole Miss
The former Texas and Texas Tech head coach just wrapped up his second season at Ole Miss, making a Sweet 16 run. Despite how his time with the Longhorns ended, Beard has a track record of winning at universities in Texas. He brought the Red Raiders to the Elite Eight and the national title game. He’s 280–121 as a head coach, and proven he can win quickly.
Chris Jans, Mississippi State
Chris Jans has yet to miss the NCAA Tournament in his three seasons at Mississippi State. The former Bowling Green and New Mexico State head coach has never coached in the state of Texas, but his track record and experience in the SEC will put him in the mix for the Texas A&M job. Over his first two seasons at Mississippi State, Jans guided the Bulldogs to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances; the last time the program made consecutive NCAA Tournament trips was in 2007-08 and 2008-09.
Tony Skinn, George Mason
A former player at George Mason, Tony Skinn was a member of the team that went on the 2006 Final Four run. Skinn led the Patriots to a 27-9 record and Atlantic-10 regular season title this season. He’s previously worked as an assistant at Maryland, Ohio State and Seton Hall. He’s yet to make an NCAA Tournament and has only been a head coach for two seasons, but has won 20 or more games in each year.
TJ Otzelberger, Iowa State
TJ Otzelberger was heavily involved in Indiana’s search before signing a contract extension through 2032. While buying out Otzelberger’s contract might not make financial sense for Texas A&M athletic director Trev Alberts, he’s made the NCAA Tournament all four seasons with the Cyclons. The former South Dakota State and UNLV head coach is 95-45 during his time in Ames and has made the Sweet 16 twice.
Luke Murray, UConn assistant
Luke Murray’s name was in the mix for the Maryland job before the Terrapins turned to Buzz Williams. Dan Hurley’s top assistant and a key piece of UConn’s back-to-back national championships has emerged as one of the top young assistants in the sport. Previously with Chris Mack at Xavier and Louisville, he’s the son of comedy icon Bill Murray. Murray has run point on implementing Hurley’s offense at UConn and worked closely with big men Adama Sanogo and Donovan Clingan.

Why would aggy even want a Longhorn as their coach.

I'm not talking about someone who coached at UT.  I'm talking about an actual Texas grad.

Stick it to us how?  He'd still be our coach if he hadn't caused a PR nightmare for the administration

Sorry, I’m too sane to explain their logic.

Because A&M thinks hiring Beard would mean he would turn their program into what he was Turing the Texas program into and winning like that would show Texas what they could have had if we kept Beard, who is one of us.

A&M athletics hasn’t one a major NC since 1939 because their sole reasoning and operational logic is based on beating or one-upping Texas instead of just focusing on what is best for sustained athletic success.

And they also let TexAgs have influence of the athletic department. That is the other main reason they will never win anything regardless of who is over there.

Let's not be stupid. Beard would be a tremendous hire for aggy and there would be a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth if it happened.  I can't imagine him leaving Ole Miss for aggy tho.  If he leaves it will be to a blue blood IMO.

aggy will complete bankrupting their entire athletic department just to think they stuck it to evil tu, though.

This tweet has now ascended to something even beyond the freezing cold take hall of fame. It should be on a plaque. Right next to the '39 champs hardware.

Hamm’s 0-15 recruiting prediction was pretty damn impressive.  I think that was when we had Charlie Strong too….which makes it even more unbelievable.

There are 3000 kids in the portal. Those previous years of building teams and dipping out for all coaches is gone.

Well…

Vic Schaefer is an Aggie and he is crushing it in Austin and saying “Praise the Lord! Hook’em Horns!” every time he is near a microphone and that has to get annoying after a while.

Beard would be an annoyingly amazing hire for those woolen fucks. I just hope he brings along his fiancée from 2 1/2 years ago.

Would be crazy, but if Buzz goes to Maryland, aggy will likely pursue Beard 🤔

Funny how when I posted this Sunday morning, Surly comments were mostly there is no way Beard to aggy would happen.

And now....  just maybe,  it could happen 😂
