The family of a Fort Lee woman killed by police during a mental health crisis last month says the 25-year-old was holding a plastic water bottle, not a knife, when cops broke through her apartment door and shot her.

As Victoria Lee was bleeding on the floor, receiving chest compressions, her mother stood nearby asking “why the police would shoot someone holding a water bottle instead of a knife,” according to a statement released Thursday by the Lee family.

The state Attorney General’s office, which is investigating the incident, previously said police were called to the high-rise apartment building by family members who said Lee was having a mental health crisis and holding a knife.

The Attorney General’s office statement about the incident released last month said a knife was found nearby after Lee was shot. But, the statement did not say if police saw her holding the knife when they entered the apartment.

The family alleged by the time police forced their way into the apartment, Lee had dropped the pocketknife and picked up a large 5-gallon Poland Spring water bottle.

“The pain and grief our family is experiencing are beyond words. Victoria was a bright and loving individual with a promising future, and her untimely death has left a void that can never be filled,” the statement said.

The family is “working closely with legal representatives to ensure that the full and accurate details of this tragic incident are brought to light,” according to the statement.

The state Attorney General’s Office, which investigates any death that occurs during an encounter with police, said its investigation into the incident was continuing Friday.

“No further information is being released at this time,” the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.

Fort Lee police previously referred all questions about the incident to the Attorney General’s Office.

Police responded to seventh floor of The Pinnacle apartments on Main Street in Fort Lee at about 1:25 a.m. on July 28 after a 911 caller reported a family member was having a mental health crisis, the Attorney General’s office previously said in a statement.

The 911 caller was Chris, Lee’s brother, who made the call because their mother was concerned about Lee’s condition, according to the family.

After speaking to Chris in the hallway, officers attempted to enter the apartment, officials said.

Lee told the officer not to come in and shut the door, the Attorney General’s Office said. Officers forced the door open.

Officer Tony Pickens Jr. of the Fort Lee Police Department fired a single shot, which struck Lee in the chest, authorities said. Police attempted medical aid on the scene before she was brought to Englewood Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m.

Lee’s family said they called 911 that day because she was holding the pocketknife and exhibiting other unusual behavior, including rolling on the bed, briefly shouting, and lightly tapping her head against the wall.

Lee was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2017 and faced other challenges, her family said. She withdrew from college in 2021. Since then, she managed her mental health condition through work, travel and music, her family said.

Chris, Lee’s brother, called 911 twice on July 28, according to the family’s statement.

At 1:15 a.m., Chris made the first call to 911, “specifically requesting an ambulance to take Victoria to Valley Hospital, where she had received treatment at its sister facility, Ramapo Mental Hospital, in the past,” the family said.

He was informed police would also accompany the ambulance because that is standard procedure for mental health calls.

Fort Lee is not one of the more than 40 cities and towns in New Jersey partnered with the ARRIVE Together program, which pairs a certified mental health specialist and a plainclothes policeman trained in crisis intervention to respond to 911 calls involving people in a mental health crisis.

After hearing both an ambulance and police were coming, Lee became agitated and picked up a pocketknife, refusing to go to the hospital, according to the Lee family.

Lee was not holding the knife as a weapon, the family argues.

She “was not, and had never been, a violent individual, even during previous episodes,” according to the family.

Concerned by recent news of police shootings, Chris called 911 again at approximately 1:20 a.m. “to provide additional information and prevent any potential misunderstanding or unnecessary escalation with the police,” the family said.

Chris also asked that police not enter the apartment, but was told that the police were required to respond for mental health cases, the family said.

To try and de-escalate the situation, Chris met police outside the door of the apartment, while Lee and her mother remained inside the unit.

An officer asked Chris for a key to the apartment, which he didn’t have, the family said.

The officer then pushed Chris aside and started to kick the door, the family alleged.

Inside the apartment, Lee’s mother “noticed with relief” that her daughter had dropped the pocketknife, the family’s statement said. Unnerved by the banging on the door, Lee picked up a 5-gallon Poland Spring plastic water bottle and clutched it.

Moments later, the door burst open, “and almost immediately, a gunshot was fired,” the Lee family’s statement said.

Relatives never saw an ambulance arrive for Lee. She was carried out of the apartment by several officers without a stretcher, according to the family.

The family is requesting the Attorney General’s Office conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

Lee’s death follows other recent fatal encounters between police and individuals believed to be experiencing mental health crises, including Andrew Washington in Jersey City and Najee Seabrooks in Paterson last year.

“These killings, like too many others, make all too clear how vulnerable people of color are during confrontations with law enforcement,” AAPI New Jersey, a statewide group that advocates for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, said in a statement Thursday.

“We are committed to working with communities and other groups to reduce unnecessary law enforcement involvement and prevent these incidents from occurring. We also call on greater investment in mental health services and community-based programs that are culturally responsive and linguistically diverse,” the group said.

Cops are nothing but rabid animals and it's hard to imagine any arguments at this point why they shouldn't all be imprisoned for the protection of ordinary Americans.

this video is about as rage-inducing as they come. guy tries to kill himself in the back of a squad car, so the cop pulls over and beats the shit around him, slams the door on his head, and leaves him there to die, before eventually resuscitating him by repeatedly jabbing the man in the chest with his baton:

the video of the cop is infuriating enough, but then you follow it up with people who normally worship the police being “shocked” that this everyday occurrence happened and you just throw roll your eyes, throw your hands, and wonder what world they’ve been living in.

She was held on $125,000 bond and had to spend 5 nights in jail before the charges were dropped. That’s criminal in itself.

A teenager on a field trip to see a Detroit court ended up in jail clothes and handcuffs because a judge said he didn't like her attitude.

Judge Kenneth King even asked other kids in the courtroom Tuesday whether the 16-year-old girl should be taken to juvenile detention, WXYZ-TV reported.

King, who works at 36th District Court, defended his actions.

“I wanted this to look and feel very real to her, even though there’s probably no real chance of me putting her in jail. That was my own version of ‘Scared Straight,’” King said, referring to a documentary about teen offenders in New Jersey.

The teen was seeing King's court as part of a visit organized by The Greening of Detroit, a nonprofit environmental group. During the visit, King noticed the girl falling asleep, WXYZ reported.

“You fall asleep in my courtroom one more time, I’m gonna put you in back, understood?” the judge said, according to video of his remarks.

King then had the girl change into jail clothes and wear handcuffs.

"It was her whole attitude and her whole disposition that disturbed me,” the judge told WXYZ. “I wanted to get through to her, show how serious this is and how you are to conduct yourself inside of a courtroom.”

King also threatened her with time in juvenile detention before releasing her.

“I’ll do whatever needs to be done to reach these kids and make sure that they don’t end up in front of me,” the judge said.

The Greening of Detroit released a statement, saying the “young lady was traumatized.”

“Although the judge was trying to teach a lesson of respect, his methods were unacceptable,” chairperson Marissa Ebersole Wood said. “The group of students should have been simply asked to leave the courtroom if he thought they were disrespectful.”

Judge Aliyah Sabree, who has the No. 2 leadership post at the court, released a statement Wednesday night, saying King's conduct “does not reflect the standards we uphold at 36th District Court.”

“I am committed to addressing this matter with the utmost diligence,” Sabree said.

There was no immediate response to a message seeking comment Wednesday from King. The court’s chief judge, William McConico, was away and unavailable for comment, his office said.

“There were so many other ways in which to have helped that young girl learn,” said Larry Dubin, a professor at the University of Detroit Mercy law school.

King told WXYZ that he spoke to the girl's parents and offered to be a mentor.

36th District Court Judge William McConico removed King from his docket late last week, saying King would not return until after undergoing training. King will still receive pay during his time away from the bench.

So he needs training to not be a power tripping dickhead?  Why is he still getting paid?

Sure, they got away with it this time, but four cars and about 20 cops to arrest one Beach Bro is taking your life into your own hands. Probably should've brought in some K9s and SWAT. They were lucky to make it home to their families that night.

This definitely requires taking a deep breath before reading. He groomed her as a 12-year old in a youth program, began having sex with her when she was 15, got her pregnant when she was 20, someone then called the PD to report his sexual involvement with her, another cop tipped him off, he then murdered the pregnant woman and staged it as a suicide. 2 other cops and his brother also had sex with her when she was a teen. The PD then covered up the murder and his involvement with the girl for 4 years until the FBI investigated.

Any LEO or family of on here? I used to believe the 80-10-10 adage. Supposedly 80 percent of LEOs were good, 10 percent were bent, and 10 percent were indifferent to the bad acts of their colleagues. It seems closer to 50/50, or less, now.

Your math is off.  100% of them are bad.  There are only two types of cops: 1) those who will do all manner of bad shit, and 2) those who will cover for and protect group 1).

That's it.  Stop overthinking it.  Cops are a criminal enterprise.

I don't agree that 80% are "good".  But even the "good" ones cover up for the bad ones.  That means they're as big a piece of shit as the "bad" ones.

They can all go fuck themselves.

That was tough to watch, especially the death leg kick at the end.

Taser? Dog was semi aggressive but my poodle mix would do the same barking and charging and then lick the shit out of the cop. But, in his defense, he doesn’t know that. I guess. Still sad.

A tazer changes a dogs attitude real quick without killing them. Let them ride the lightning, legs straightened out stiff and falling over sideways like an unbalanced taxidermy piece. Once the ride is over the fear causes them to GTFO. Dog risk is gone and it's still alive.  That cop had plenty of time to use that option.

The body cam footage somehow makes it look even worse. The dog was clearly playing. No aggression, no growling, no showing teeth. Just bouncing back and forth like dogs do when they’re excited and playing. Also, what a cowardly response from the police department. Just fucking pathetic. I shouldn’t have watched that video
