LA Times Editorial Board about the financial hole the city has dug for itself:

https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2024-10-18/los-angeles-latest-budget-crisis-is-self-inflicted

Quote

Los Angeles is teetering on the edge of a fiscal emergency, with its finances in “dire” condition and no money to cover unplanned expenses after a series of lawsuit payouts blew a hole in the city’s already-tight budget.

So if you were hoping this would be the year that City Hall, in preparation for the 2028 Olympics, would get moving on smoothing busted sidewalks, fixing burned out street lights, trimming trees or any other public investments to make the city nicer for residents and visitors alike — don’t hold your breath.

L.A. is broke. Mayor Karen Bass and the City Council have to get serious about developing a plan to stabilize the city’s finances this year and for the future.

Quote

It won’t be an easy task. In just the first three months of the fiscal year that started July 1, the city is on the hook for $258 million in liability costs. The largest category of payouts — 40% — is related to police department negligence or use of force.

Quote

Contracts are negotiated in secret, ratified by union members and quickly rubber-stamped by elected officials, many of whom rely on labor unions for campaign contributions. There was little discussion last year of how providing $1 billion in police raises over four years would affect the budget and how other employee unions would expect similarly large increases. Nor was there public discussion on the agreement to let park rangers and some police officers turn their good pensions into great pensions at a one-time cost of $23 million to the general fund; voters will decide on Nov. 5 if that deal goes forward with Charter Amendment FF.

Bar chart showing liability payouts in the City of LA Text says: "THE CITY OF LA HAS SURPASSED ITS $87 MILLION LIABILITY CLAIMS BUDGET: WE'VE SPENT $97 MILLION IN THE FIRST THREE MONTHS OF THE FISCAL YEAR" Bars are higher depending on how the payment amounts are with Police having the tallest bar with $59,391,312 then: Miscellaneous $21,519,428 Street Services $6,110,000 Transportation $5,600,000 Fire $2,126,566 Sanitation $1,136,793 Engineering $846,633 Rec & Parks $250,000

i’m a true crime junkie, and the more i watch the more it gets driven home that when someone is missing and/or might be in danger, the police go-to is, “we can’t enter this house without exigent circumstances”, yet when someone inside the house mihht have a joint on them, or kinda sorta almost fits the description of shoplifting suspect, or looked at a cop the wrong way, THEN they’re getting into that house by any means necessary. it’s so fucking aggravating a)how obvious it is that police are only interested in wielding power over you as opposed to actually serving you/your community, and b)how many dumbfuck neighbors i have who think that these gangsters with badges are heroes.

it is un-fucking-real how much power the police unions now hold.

completely fuck up your job, threaten a basically naked man with a gun because you are too fucking stupid to understand basic communication protocol and you get your job back because the city didnt follow the fire protocol to the fucking letter.

Fuck every union. Heaven forbid you not give someone a counseling for being a shithead before you fire them to make things better on everyone.

Fine.

If police unions wish to bully departments into re-hiring cops who are bad at their jobs and/or abuse the public trust, then find some legal loophole that requires those same unions pay for civil settlements.

turns out even in Canada that cops lie, collude and conspire to convict a guy for Murder 1 of a cop.

video lays out the whole story, but the fuckery starts in 2021  where 2 plainclothed cops completely mistake an innocent  couple being suspects in a stabbing.

The couple are about to head home, in a BMW in a parking garage, suddenly without much comprehendable warning have 2 plainclothed cops, who are wearing covid masks, aggressively running up to both sides of the car and at the same time slamming on both sides of the windows and telling the couple to get out.

The husband assumes they are being carjacked and peels out backwards to get away.

in the process of backing out , the angle of the car hip checks one of the cops, and knocks him down, and the BMW then switches to drive and now cant see the cop on the ground, and runs over the now hidden cops head - killing him instantly

As the couple tries to head for the exit, a unmarked cop van blocks their exit, so they reverse and head to the other garage exit on the other side of the garage, where, 2 innocent cars are also trying to leave the garage via the normal validated ticket machine... and as the BMW gets to the gate, ANOTHER unmarked cop car RAMs the BMW, from behind with enough force to pop the airbags, and then the cops come out with guns drawn . the 2 innocent cars both think they are in the middle of a robbery and run through the gates to escape.

The 3 remaining cops are allowed to write their report on their version of the death of their collegue ALL SITTING AT THE SAME TABLE.

all 3 report that the drive of the bmw mowed down the innocent cop by hitting him dead center of the hood and then over his body.

all 3 reports are identical.  in which all 3 cops confirm that they clearly and obiously IDd themselves as cops and that the evil driver purposely killed the cop.

turns out there was video surveilence of the garage from several angles.  proves that the BMW driver never saw the cop on the ground.  also turns out that a car being put into hard reverse in a concrete driveway leaves hyper obvious skid marks that allwed forensic study to prove all 3 cops entire reports were bullshit.

they were so bullshit the Canada judge literally told the jury if the evidence doesnt match the testimony to consider the possiblity of their being collusion amongst the cops.

cop killer is cleared of all charges.   yet of course no punishment for 3 cops who colluded to try and get a guy arrested for Murder 1.

the full length video of this one is absurd.  the guy in cuffs was relentless in talking shit to her and rightfully so.   one of the youtube comments was spot on in how stupid this was:  "the guy called the cops for someone pointing a gun at him so the cops showed up and pointed a gun at him"

just listening to this cop speak should put the fear of god in this community. the guy looks like he’s about to explode into a ball of tears and rage at any moment, all because his community has the gall to seek accountability for his department being shitty at their jobs. this is america.

All.

Cops.

Are.

Bad.

There is no room for argument or discussion any longer.  They abuse.  They lie.  They commit heinous crimes.  And they all cover for each other.  It has always been that way, and always will be that way, because that is exactly how they want it to be.

He's mentally incapable of remembering FB post and text, but he he gets to keep his gun and badge?

Statements “out of character” my ass. He revealed his true character. He is unfit to serve the public in any capacity.

Which means he’ll stay a cop for life, with zero consequences or accountability. Duh.

I really think that we may be better of with AI robots ala Robocop. Sure, it went on a murderous rampage initially, but nothing a little code tweak won't fix. Its kill count is less than the real thing.

But the police made it home safely right? That’s all that matters.

One day there will be an incident in a large crowd like that where the officers will be trampled/beaten to death

and AI will ID, and arrest everyone within 100 yards of the officers and charge 1500 people with murder 1 of a cop with death penalty attached.

over the last 4 weeks or so, this Nashville TV station has been going full jihad on all the local Nashville PD's that keep arresting and charging completely sober people with DUI because the cops keep insisting that the tests show someone is "obviously" impaired.... and then blood work comes back 5 months later saying, nope, sober.

it started as a few local PD's who had multiple MADD award winning officers with MULTIPLE sober DUI arrests.  The investigations then snowballed from there, and then after getting FIOA responses from the state, they have now identified over 600 Tenn folks who were charged with sober DUI.

Now the station has been showing the impacts its had on peoples lives where they are losing jobs, cars, housing, etc as a result of just getting the DUI charges, and that its taking a half a year for the testing companies to return the blood work  (which also seems punitive)

Interesting that the police version on the day of the incident was "she was aggressive" and "tried to run us over" - but a prosecutor and grand jury thought differently.

Would be great if they would release the video.  Scottie Scheffler ?

I understand that as a general rule the police chief has to stand by their people until investigations tell otherwise.

but fucking telling the news stations officially that " he stands by the decisions made" so far where an under 100lb woman holding a 2 month old and a knife was somehow deemed lethally dangerous to a cop is a special level of stupid.

I dont give a fuck if the knife was a massive chefs knife.... a 100lb woman holding a baby has almost zero ability to hurt you, let alone attempt to kill you if you are more than 2 arms lengths away.

This bullshit 21 foot 'knife is a deadly weapon radius" defense used by cops to kill a person with a knife isnt FUCKING VALID HERE, she cant charge you at full speed... unless she drops the child... which would be a whole other fucking story. Just  BACK THE FUCK UP if she comes towards you.

if you somehow managed to get yourself penned in without an escape point, grab something to get between you and her.

as soon as this officers name becomes public, it would be a real shame if his home was picketed with protestors holding baby killer signs....

Decades too late. He should have been killed by one of his victims defending herself.

Also, he’s not an outlier. Cops using their power to inflict sexual violence on the vulnerable/voiceless is so common that it might as well be taught as a class at the academy.

Judge Dayna Blazey has sentenced Austin police officer Christopher Taylor to two-years in prison in his conduct case. He is out on an appellate bond and not in custody.

In October, a jury found him guilty of deadly conduct in the 2019 police shooting of Mauris DeSilva. Police responded to 911 calls of DeSilva walking around his downtown Austin condo complex with a knife to his throat.

Officers confronted DeSilva outside of an elevator in a common area of the building, told him to drop the knife, and shot and killed him. Taylor and another officer, Karl Krycia, fired guns. Another officer fired a Taser.
