First reaction to finale:  That's it?

Episode was fine (like the series overall), but what a bust for a finale compared to any of the ep 9/10 of GOT S1-4.

Kind of going to miss her random questions on Sunday nights.

Why do you think the random questions will stop? Are you getting divorced?

My gf is from India, and is one of the smartest people I've known.  If you administered any of the commonly used IQ tests, she'd score extremely high.

And she somehow made it through her entire life not knowing that North America is completely surrounded by water.  I know this because she asked me how long it would take if we drove to India.  I explained to her why that's impossible, and told her never, ever let anyone know she'd asked that.  Soon after, I bought a nice globe for the house.

Even when they're smart, they ask nonsensical questions.

Of course, I've seen enough of those "stop random college kids and ask them history/geography questions" videos on YouTube to understand that today's younger generations are the mostly poorly educated about commonplace stuff since the 19th century.

Hate to break it to you, but falling into water from that height is like hitting concrete. You can get fucked up if you land poorly from 10M (about 30 feet). He was above storm cloud level (more than 10,000 feet). He dead.

The show strictly adheres to physical laws. I believe Newton himself hypothesized on bodies falling from dragons into the sea.

I believe that was Galileo, as he mentioned that in a vacuum, a dragon and feather fall at the same rate.

You reminded me of the film of one of our astronauts on the moon holding the hammer and a feather, and he said that one of the reasons we were able to get to the moon was because of some theories by a guy named Galileo.  He then dropped a hammer and a huge feather and they gently landed on the moon at the same time.  Don't know why it struck me like it did but it brought a tear to my eye.

Not to derail, but I thought at some point in recent decades that theory was starting to develop some holes.

Also there’s no social media…how did news of Lucs death reach daemon? There was only 1 witness. Why did aemond spill the beans?

I’m reminded of a sidebar in a Douglas Adams book where he talked about a civilization that invented a spaceship that was powered by bad news because it’s the only thing faster than light. But the ship was always so unwelcome wherever it landed that they scrapped the program.

We don’t really know the time lapse between scenes.   And like I said above “hey Baratheon did my kid swing by?”   “Yep and so did your brother.  He didn’t seem happy about it”

per Rheanyra, Storm's End is a short flight.    Luc is overdue, and from there his mom can connect the dots pretty quickly.

what dots you say?

A raven from Baratheon telling her that her son arrived, gave the message, received a reply, and had to be escorted out of the hall because her brother tried to kill him.  Kid was last seen on his dragon going home, and shortly thereafter, Aemond left on dragonback in the direction of her son.

doesnt take a genious to put those pieces together and know that A) Luc aint coming back, and B) Aemond had something to do with that death esp after challening him to a dual right beforehand.

Yea you right. They will stop until we start a new series. And it take us 1.5 hrs to watch 1 hr episodes.

I think the myth busters did an episode about dragons taking off on treadmills, but I didn’t want to drop that knowledge just yet.

To those asking how Daemon found out about Luke and his dragon getting kilt, I read a tweet yesterday that their bodies washed up on shore three days later.

Reading a tweet? Seems dangerously close to a book. Tread lightly.

My wife has a Masters in Econ from an Ivy and scored 11th overall in her country’s college entrance exam her year. Watching TV with her is like watching TV with a 5-year-old.

The people of Dorne are descended from the Rhoynar, whose queen named Nymeria (after whom Arya named her direwolf) led a bunch of them to Westeros to escape the Valyrians who were conquering Essos a la the Romans.  Once arrived in what would later become Dorne, she ordered all their ships burnt.

It doesn't really apply though.  At this point in Westerosi history, the descendants of the First Men and the invading Andals have indeed been conquered, but Dorne hasn't been brought into the fold yet and is still an independent kingdom.

Watched the episode again.  Enjoyed it even more.  Really well done season finale.

Arrax apparently suffered from some chihuahua-like delusion.  And Vhagar is clearly cranky as fuck in her old age.

He's incorrect anyway.  Two chunks of dragon washed up but Luke's body was never found.  Hope that doesn't violate the bookfag rule since it isn't spoiling anything

lol poor little guys

All that yucky woman stuff and childbirth is so traumatizing!!

It’s almost as if the two main characters that drive the story are women and the theme of the birthing bed being another battlefield was stated explicitly in episode one!

I mean, I was present for the birth of all three of my children.  I realize it's a fact of life.  So is vomiting and poop.  Doesn't mean I need to see the graphic details on screen.

They're the two main characters, but the action in this show isn't driven by them, it's driven by a collection of second-born sons who are greedy and self-interested in pursuit of their ambitions.

Daemon, Otto, Vaemond*, Aemond, Larys Strong, the younger Lannister twin-brother on the small council, etc are the real culprits.

I'm thinking from this point on, it's just good old fashion GOT killings.  Hopefully everybody is too busy killing each other to have sex.  Though I've noticed a few times where the show took one line out of the book and spent 15 minutes of the show on it.  So I've probably forgotten one single line in the book like "As if the 7 kingdoms being at war was not bad enough, this was also what has commonly been known as the Summer of still births."  And S2E3 is all birthing scenes wrapped up with a 2 minute dragon fight at the very end of the episode.

Not a single woman I know wants to see more birthing scenes in this show. They’ve all said there have been too many as well

Yeah, I have 2 female friends who watched and both are like omg can these stop?

I have no problem with scenes of giving birth, it's a natural part of life.  I don't need a graphic one every other episode.

Another perspective to consider is that circumstances of birth outside of one's control (gender and birth order in this instance) throughout history have been given precedence over other considerations. One could say 'thems the breaks,' but Martin adeptly shows how awry that can go. That, to me, is one of the themes he illustrates but to say the action is wholly due to the above mentioned group (and they do play major parts in plot movement) does disservice to the two female lead characters.

W/respect to the birthing scenes, I thought it interesting that in the four depictions (3 episodes because one episode had two) the directors were male and save one episode, male writers. The episode with Vaemond's beheading was written and directed by women.

The first childbirth set in motion both Rhaenyra being the heir and Alicent being the opposition to that. The 2nd scene set the table of Alicent's need to get Aegon named heir and making the audience side with Team Black by making Alicent a massive bitch. Daemon's wife dying during childbirth set in motion the availability of Daemon and Rhaenyra to wed and join the Targ line. The final one helps underscore the tragedy of losing two children so close together. They all had a purpose in this show. Stop being such p's.

Could have had the same plot points without the graphic details. Was the show better for making us cringe through multiple painful, bloody, and ultimately fatal child birth scenes? Not for me but different strokes for different folks. I’m not here to kink shame anyone
