To me the NFL is a much better gig at this point but I suppose that's personal preference.

I actually don't think Sark would be a particularly good NFL HC. Much of his success here has simply been an effect of the roster he's built; which of course he gets a ton of credit for as a college coach, but it would not work like that in the NFL. His track record in games where the other side has something approaching a similar talent level isn't great and he was a mediocre NFL OC.

I'm not real worried about him leaving because he seems like a pretty self aware guy and probably knows that. And he's put so much into Texas and is now so close, with Arch fucking Manning about to take the keys, I have a hard time seeing him walk away from that.

Especially to work for NFL aggy lol.

Yeah, the Mannings say hi.

Why would anyone go scuba diving in Saba?

Call it hindsight, I guess, but do you think different ideas were thrown around once our coaches realized we had a 3rd quarter problem? And we had plenty of great reps from Arch, in the games early in the season.  All we had to do was have Arch come out and run the first series of the 2nd half in two or three games in a row, it seems to me.  This was so much easier to handle than the stupid 2009 situation, I think, when Mack fucked up by refusing to let GG pass when he was allowed to go in and mop up.   Doesn't QE improve his focus, etc. when he sees Arch moving the ball in the 3rd quarter? Got to look at Saban.  Remember he sat whichever starting QB it was and went to the backup in the 3rd or 4th quarter?  Wasn't it the final game?  Unbelievable.  Is Saban the only coach with the balls to do that?

Have you watched us the last 3 years? The third quarter issue isn't new. And I doubt it is going away next year.

We have a third quarter with Arch against MSU where we fumbled on the first play we ran; Arch botching a 4th and short throw (to be fair I didn't love the play call, he was asked to make a very Ewers-esque throw in terms of touch and ball placement); MSU getting inside the Texas 40 down 14-6 before a penalty killed their drive; at least two OL procedural penalties; and Texas taking three plays to score on the worst defense they played all year from 1st and goal at the 1.

We also went long stretches without scoring on UTSA or ULM in the third quarter with Arch at QB. I'm not going to scrutinize those too much because they're scrimmages, but they're another data point that inserting Arch does not magically fix the third quarter.

It's insane to me that this sport has an aspect of the game kicking/punting evolve so that insanely specialized players are the only ones capable.  Special teams coaches are responsible for coaching the other 10 players on the field, but just cross their fingers with the most important.  They should have just phased kicking out of the game 30+ years ago.

No kicking in

No doubt QB sneak is back on the table. As mentioned, we ran it with ease for Arch vs. Colorado St, but had some issues with it later on. Sark was chewing Arch out when it took multiple attempts vs. Miss St.

Feel pretty comfortable we will get that sorted out this offseason.

Sark is on record that he was chewing Arch out because he felt like he got in on the first two attempts but Arch got up too quickly before the ref could make it to the pile and see where he was, so no touchdown.

I swear to this day that when Arch ran for that 1st down. TV was looking to review for a possible fumble and the whole time I was hollering at my TV that they should’ve been looking for Targeting! His hit was helmet to helmet behind the ear hole. When he stood up, his steps were staggered, so I knew he was concussed (potentially) at that time. Never saw the field again. Man could we’d have used him at 1st and Goal.

I think the evidence is pretty damning that while Quinn’s physical capabilities might have been a part of it, and Arch might be able to offset those some with his skills etc that the real issues with our 3rd quarter isn't with the QB. Neither was Quinn the issue nor Arch the fix.

Sark's halftime adjustments, in short, are absolutely shit. It's getting worse not better. Doesn't matter the QB.

This discussion doesn't really belong in the Arch thread, but I fear Arch might get some of the hate for a failure that absolutely rests on the shoulders of our HC. It's a problem and anyone that doesn't see it by this point.. fuck man, I dunno what to tell them that will.

Sark clearly can make adjustments.  Klatt is talking about one such adjustment in the national champ game preview.  It's not like he is incapable of it, but, strangely, the 3Q was such a clusterfuck.  Is he better when he makes quick decisive adjustments (the one Klatt is talking about was clearly made in game during the 1H) and outhinks himself when he and the staff have 20 minutes?

I feel like people underrate the difficulty of being a full-time OC in game while also being head coach. As a standalone OC, you can spend every timeout and defensive possession reviewing clips, thinking about the next drive, talking to players, etc. As HC, you spend that time focused on the defense, special teams and time mgmt. You don't have "free time" to look at clips from previous drives or think about what the offense will do next.

Point being - I'm pretty sure Sark can make adjustments as an OC, but does he have the time to figure out what those adjustments should be while also doing HC duties? Probably not. Maybe that's why a playcaller hasn't won a championship in so long..

I love Sark and what he’s done for the program. I really think it’s time for him to interpret the “game plan” to an officially named OC and let them run with it. Sark just needs to be a Sideline Coach and motivator, which he is already good at. That and the recruiting and public PR which he so excels at is at a premium and priceless.

It likely nothing more than semantics, but Sark isn't the OC.  Kyle Flood is, and AJ Milwee is co-OC.  I have no idea what input Flood/Milwee have during game prep, but it's pretty clear Sark is calling most of the plays.

Likely? It's nothing but.

"Co-" anything is theoretically justification for a higher salary.

The actual OC is the one who decides whether to run or pass and which run or pass concept to use. The co-OCs are tasked with making the choice from their implementation. This is true regardless of whether we're talking practice or game.

In game, the OC is focused on how the game plan is working and what changes might be needed to fix a problem or take advantage of opportunities.

It just is not - or at least seems to be not - possible to oversee both the whole game as HC, and also the offense as OC. I lean toward "not possible".

Almost possible, or we wouldn't be getting to the Final Four, despite our talent advantages. Not quite is nevertheless "not".

Would it make your semantic problem better if we call the position HOC, for Head Offensive Coordinator?

What exactly would an offensive minded HC like sark discuss with the defense? This is a serious question. I can think of a ton of shit to discuss with the shitty special teams coach.
