30 For 30 On Michael Jordan: The Last Dance

This series has led me down a rabbit hole on what made MJ MJ. Here's a good vid of his trainer detailing their workouts.

Interesting story starting @ 8:16 about starting the "Breakfast Club" which became a morning workout with MJ, Ron Harper and Pip. The trainer goes on to say that Ron and Pip didn't miss workouts because MJ would give them shit about it. Was he an asshole, sure? Was he leading by example and holding others accountable. Damn right.

The more details that come out about MJ, the more amazed I am about his absolute dedication to his craft. Dude was pyscho about putting in the work.

I think if you wanna call MJ an asshole above and beyond the call of duty, you could try to compare him to Tom Brady maybe. What's the line on his training/ practice persona ?

What about other GOAT candidates ?

Gretzky

Trout

Neither one of them had the 'asshole' tag on their clubhouse personna.  the Astros are still Altuve's team and he clowns with the best of em; although Lance McCullers found out not to fuck around the wrong way and show up a teammate.

aren't those Air Jordans in your Avatar?

(honestly, I can't tell...I've never been a shoe guy)

LOL.   They were a gift from a young female worker where I was a QC at, always teased about her shoes and she bought me a pair of my own.  That may have been the only time I wore them was for the pic.

Gretzky is a GOAT probably.

Trout a GOAT ? hardly.  Did Gretzky have the championships like MJ ?  Can't say I follow hockey.

Gretzky is even less debatable than Jordan as to his position as GOAT in his sport.  Google alltime hockey stats...

4 Stanley Cups and the Conn Smythe in all 4 of them.

He won the Hart Trophy(MVP) from 1980 to 87 and again in 89.

Here's the records Gratzky holds:

Records update[edit]

Since Wayne Gretzky’s retirement, two of his records have fallen and he has gained one record, leaving him with a new total of 60 official records.

Broken Records[edit]

  • Gretzky’s record of 15 regular season overtime assists has now been passed by three players. They are Nicklas Lidstrom (16), Adam Oates (17), and Mark Messier (18).
  • Joe Sakic (16), Mark Messier (14), and Ray Bourque (13) have passed Gretzky’s record (12) for most All-Star game assists.

New Records[edit]

  • Wayne Gretzky finished his career with a 1.921 points per game average. Mario Lemieux originally held the record when Gretzky retired with 2.005 points per game, but after Lemieux came back to the NHL from 2000 to 2005, his points per game average fell to 1.883, falling to second behind Gretzky.

Unofficial records[edit]

Along with his numerous official records, Wayne Gretzky also has many "unofficial" records. These other records - though not recognized by the NHL Official Guide and Record Book - are still significant records.

NHL scoring records[edit]

  • Youngest player to score 50 goals in a season (19 years, two months)
  • Most points by an NHL player in his first year: 137. Because of Gretzky's season played in the WHA, he was not considered a rookie in his first year, so the rookie record belongs to Teemu Selanne with 132
  • Most assists by an NHL player in his first year: 86. The rookie record is held jointly by Peter Stastny and Joe Juneau with 70 assists. Note that the record book gives Gretzky the record for most assists and points in a game as a first year player, but not the season totals
  • Most 200-or-more point seasons: 4. Gretzky owns the official record for most 100 point seasons. He is the only player to reach 200 points in a season
  • Most consecutive 200 point seasons: 3
  • Most 70-or-more goal seasons: 4. The NHL has a record for most 60 goal seasons, but not 70. Eight players have achieved 70 goals, and Brett Hull did so three times.

  • Most 90-or-more goal seasons: 1. Gretzky is the only player to achieve this

The NHL has an official record for the most goals in first 50 games, but not the fastest 50 goals
  • Fastest 100 points: 34 games in 1983–84
  • Most seasons averaging at least 1 point per game: 19
  • Most consecutive seasons averaging at least 1 point per game: 19

Sorry, i have no respect for someone who can't give other players their due. Laughing at Gary Payton like he was some scrub was some garbage, tbh.

I'll send him a letter so we  can all rest assured that Pam's grievances were properly aired.  I mean, not even anyone here gives a shit what you think, but this should at least make you feel better as you have clearly been wronged by the GOAT.

  • Most consecutive 70 goal seasons: 4
  • Most 80-or-more goal seasons: 2
  • Most 90-or-more goal seasons: 1. Gretzky is the only player to achieve this
  • Fastest 50 goals from start of season: 50 goals in 39 games. The mark of 50 goals in 50 games is a rare event, achieved by only five players. The quickest, 50 goals in 39 games, is often labelled as the most difficult one to break of all of Gretzky's records.
  • Most seasons averaging at least 2 points per game: 10

I definitely agree with you.  But most say even today Jordan would be GOAT, and he may even be better with the advantages given at the offensive end of the court - no Jordan rules today, would never fly.  Many say Gretzky wouldn't be the same in today's game - I'm not sure, but to me Gretzky is the greatest...

Messier has 6 rings.  Gretzky only 4.  One of em is the GOAT in hockey by a huge ass margin...

This is even more fun of a chart if you put up what the second-place record holder has as a stat. He's ~900 points ahead of second place in all-time points, for example (Jagr).

I understand that, but GOAT status was being compared across sports. I think the 6 rings matter more than all of the records. Gretzky is undoubtably the GOAT in hockey.

9 MVPs in his sport, a sport with more players...

Rings matter, but so does recognition as the best.

My bigger point on Gretzky is the Lady Byng Trophies and the fact that he was recognized for his sportsmanship, repeatedly; along with being the best ever in his sport.

Yeah you can prop up the "his desire to win was so great that it made him be a completely awful being to everyone around him and it made them a better basketball player" narrative all you want. And i'm sure those guys were very motivated to not disappoint MJ. The fact of the matter is MJ didn't win shit until he had Pippen/Phil/a better overall team.

Your stupidity knows no bounds

That was my question how he got there. As one of the guys are a driven asshole.

A shame Lemieux didn't have better luck with his body/health. He's the only one who even lives in Gretzky's pts/gm neighborhood and that's with a decent stint played post-cancer/retirement.

I mean, statistically speaking...there's gotta be some...no?  Particularly with the advent of the ball +1 to the 3 ball gameplan?

Neither one of them had the 'asshole' tag on their clubhouse personna.  the Astros are still Altuve's team and he clowns with the best of em; although Lance McCullers found out not to fuck around the wrong way and show up a teammate.

Trout is a super nice guy. He’ll also never win any game of actual consequence, nor does he elevate/push his teammates to be better themselves. Poor example.

He's the best player in the game today and will be for the era.

Substitute Jose Altuve, if you must.   Much beloved Yankee killer.

I know, but he's better than anyone Helobious roots for, and that was the point.  Baseball's different.  It's an individual sport in a team setting, if you will.

Crazy that Brent is 11 years younger, played for a franchise that didn't exist when his brother was drafted, scored 4 points,  and we still talk about him.

What gives you that idea? Jordan’s leader ship style was abrasive. But he wasn’t ostracized by any means. It’s not like he was some Lonewolf

My son, who is in a constant argument with me about LBJ being the goat, pointed me to some YouTube commentary that basically said the changing of the defensive rules in the early 2000s would make Jordan less effective today.  No more isolation moves that were Jordan's bread and butter and since his career 3 pt % is low compared to the players of today he'd have trouble scoring as much.

My response was do you think for a second if 3s were the most important part of the game he wouldn't spend all summer practicing from long range until he was hitting 50%?  I mean he's watched all 8 episodes with me, has he just not been paying attention?

2 thoughts.

First you have failed as a parent.

Second you need to disavow him to save face.

Let us know when it's done.

I don't know shit about hockey but I live in the middle of hockey country.  People will argue over LBJ/Jordan, Brady/Montana, Trout/Williams and all sorts of goat conversations.  I've never heard a hockey goat discussion.  It's just taken as a given.

Gretzky was probably as good at hockey as Jordan was at basketball.  His problem is that a decent percentage of people in this country give not a single fuck about hockey.  I’m a pretty big sports fan, live in Dallas, and I’m not sure I could name more than 3 or 4 players on the Stars.

This is wrong. Just plain wrong. Gretzky is *easily* a bigger GOAT than Jordan. Easily. Gretzky is so far and away the best hockey player ever that it's not even an argument.
