It's been mentioned here before, bears repeating. It's a shame that Jordan and Olajuwon didn't cross paths more often.

This was one memorable encounter.

I was at that game. It is indeed a shame we never got Jordan v Olajuwon but the real tragedy was we didn't get Jordan & Olajuwon.  People often forget that the Rockets went 5-1 against the Bulls during their first 3 peat.  They didn't have an answer for Olajuwon (other than Cartwright's elbow and hence Hakeem wearing the goggles) and Mad Max was able to get under Jordan's skin like few other players.

People always bring up 1997 but I'm still more pissed about 1993 vs the Sonics.

these aren't analogous situations. AI was the one player on his team who wasn't a complete spare, and he took a beating night in and night out trying to will his team to victory. The Sixers didn't need to get more guys involved, they needed to get the ball to Allen. AI was 100% right when he said what he said here.

The first part of your post, sure. The team around AI really was garbage. But my god, how much did Larry Brown harp on him to "play the right way." That's all you ever heard from him. And the whole practice thing... if I'm not mistaken, that was taken out of context and AI's best friend was killed earlier that year and the murder trial had just started. If you look at it through that lens, it takes on a whole different meaning so I give him a pass on that one. But let's not confuse AI with being in the same boat as any of the greats when it comes to being a winner or leader who made his teammates better and did all he could to win. And his supporting cast isn't 100% to blame for that. Even later in his career, he had the chance to take a smaller role on some decent teams but couldn't or wouldn't adapt. I love Iverson for what he was and what he represented, but I never felt like he truly "got it" about making his teammates better.

Rodman was his own player and as long as they won, MJ respected it.  Rodman was probably more akin to Francis Bacon--booze all night, grind the next day.  Or I could just be sleep deprived.

There is a lot of revisionist history on Rodman. His behavior with the Spurs was despicable. Maybe the Spurs didn't give him enough rope and maybe he never respected Bob Hiill and/or David Robinson. Well, actually I know he didn't respect Bob Hill. People used to call Bob "Bo". Rodman would refer to him "ner", as in Bo-ner.

Regardless, I think the Spurs would have put up with his shit if he actually performed on the court and had been a good teammate, which he 100% was not. He was completely selfish, would forsake team defense for getting in position to rebound, get technical fouls at horrible times, and generally do his own thing on the court. None of that shit would fly nowadays. Could you imagine a player on a championship team taking a few days out in the middle of the season to go on a Vegas bender? It would be the biggest story in the NBA in years. NBA Twitter would fucking explode.

Watching that clip, the most apt comparison I can think of for a modern day player is Dirk. Dirk is obviously bigger, but I see a lot of similarities in their shooting style and ability to hit from just about anywhere.

Other than being big, white and able to shoot with range, I don't see a lot of similarities. No disrespect to Dirk, but Bird was a better all around player. Bird was a next level passer, a great rebounder and when he was young, a plus defender.

I'm a little younger, so I never really saw Bird play other than highlights (obviously, not saying Dirk was as good.  Bird of course was definitely better).  The "shoot with range" part that you mentioned was really what I saw in that clip of Bird that led me to make that comparison.  That post-up turn around fade away, reverse lay ups, ability to hit from anywhere, I thought it looked pretty similar.  To your point, I can't compare the rest of their game, but shooting wise at least, that's all I was going for.

Bird is just next fucking level, and every time someone is surprised that this contradiction of an NBA player is considered one of the greatest to ever lace up a pair of sneakers, it makes me smile. YouTube videos of him and Magic passing is better than porn. Bird, Magic, and Michael, the holy trinity.

Also, this doc has made me pine for NBC's coverage of the NBA. It's been almost 20 years since the Mouse took over and it's sucked every step of the way.

Amazed how Rodman could party like a rock star and still play his ass off. Dude was a physical freak.

And fuck Isiah Thomas. And China.

It probably happens more than we know. Hell, Harden lives at the strip club and that doesn't stop him from traveling his way across the court to insane numbers. Didn't Dwight Howard eat the equivalent of Verne Troyer in candy bars a day? Some of the stories had Mike staying up until 4 am in the casinos. These guys truly are superheros. Imagine having a buffet of beautiful groupies to satisfy your every desire night after night. It's a wonder they get any sleep at all.

But not yet willing to break from his North Carolina discipline of accepting organization first. Jordan broke his foot three games into that 1985-86 season and would be replaced in the lineup by Gervin, who later fell into a drug problem in what would be his final NBA season.

That was Jordan's second season. He was talking about his rookie season. Orlando was on the team his rookie season.

A few months ago I made one of the college kids at the office watch some highlight videos of Magic and Bird after he made the claim to me that no one in the past could match NBA players of today. He quickly admitted he was wrong. He was dumbfounded by the passes those guys could make.

Read some of the stories about Michael Irvin, it's amazing what he put his body through and was still the hardest worker on the team.

Two things seem to never change....

1) Old players swear they could dominate the current generation

2) Young kids seem to think old players couldn't play today

indeed:

"What separated Jordan from all of us was he was the first one to three-peat. But he didn't three-peat against Magic, Larry and Dr. J."

Crazy that MJ ended the reign of Detroit, prevented the Celtics and the Lakers from winning again, denied Utah, Suns and Portland from getting rings, and stopped Ewing, Barkley, Malone and other hall of famers from ever getting a ring.  And yet, Isiah doles out this nugget of garbage. Thomas and the Pistons got retired by the Bulls.

He's a bitter little bitch that has changed his story a million times and contradicts himself over and over again. Anything that comes out of his mouth should just be ignored.

There are some who just transcend the fuck out of timelines.

Jim Brown could fucking play in any era. . Baseball players galore could play in any era.

Magic/ Bird/ Jordan would be elite mega stars regardless of era.  Just watching highlights from the 80's/ 90's even of the teams who didn't win it all like Utah, Portland, Cleveland, or Indiana were going to beat the living fuck out of you. Players were way the fuck tougher.

Hell, now we have players who need to sit out because (gasp)  they have a midweek back-2-back on the schedule.

Starts with Isiah being a bitch and then Pippen and McGrady debate GOAT between Jordan and James.  The next video is Scottie talking about why he felt like they could have won another two championships.  I don't know that they could have, can't guess but he makes some interesting points.  In the end, Scottie needed to get paid and did which doesn't get mentioned.  Both are interesting, short interviews.

Pippen's time with the Rockets made Krauss look a little more justified.  a little.

He was also playing in a system that did not maximize his talents. That offense was "dump it in to Hakeem or Chuck and let them work."

Dennis Rodman also said the same of Bird, yet somehow came out comparatively scot-free.

IMO it's because despite Rodmans shortcomings, he was real and not trying to hold himself up as something he wasn't.

Still baffles me they planned on letting a championship caliber coach go before the season started and were openly saying it was his last season with them.

Owners want to prove it's all them. See Jerry Jones.

Comparing Mohamed Ali's political activism and Jordan's is a bit incongruous.  Ali faced imprisonment and lost his license to compete, albeit temporarily.

That's worlds apart from simply endorsing someone at home. I don't think MJ has any regrets on what he did or didn't do.  He called his shots, but it is an incredible leap to compare the 2 in that realm.

Seemed like a bunch of other folks, even his own mom; are the ones who wanted to leverage his aura  in politics.

Its really strange to me that Elgin Baylor isn't mentioned more as top 10

2 guys averaged 27 points and 13 boards for a career.  Elgin Baylor and....

Wilt Chamberlain

It is really fucking hard to average 27 points a game in the NBA for a career.  I don't care what era it is.

Kinda ended the illusion for me....

It only added to the illusion.  He was pathological in his desire to win and that massive chip on his shoulder never left - it's the only reason he was able to win like he did.  Winning makes people soft.  Not that MF.  He will go to the grave feeling slighted.  Even as the undisputed GOAT.

Yep, but I was referring to 94 and 95; had MJ never retired, people think it would have been a slam dunk to win 8. I didn’t think so without a solid center and mental fatigue. We were on fumes at the end of 93 as well.

Starting to comment because I finally caught up.  As an absolute Bulls junkie, It has lived up to the hype.

I agree with above, I don't think there's any way in hell they win 8.  Jordan was mentally rejuvenated with the baseball hiatus and the loss to the Magic in his shortened season really lit a fire under his ass.  If he never retires, Houston likely takes one and then maybe the Jazz?

Also, remember he came back with a deal of sorts between himself and the media to give him some space.  And that was huge for him mentally.
