Texas BBQ

Wanted to do a Texas BBQ dinner for friends in Germany. Had the boy pick up a whole brisket from Suzy’s in Frankfurt.

Dude…it was legit. For real. We made potato salad…and Kraft Mac and cheese, because America, as sides. It was all a big hit. When the German gal said “I don’t want any sides, I’d rather just eat brisket,” we knew we had a winner.

So, if you’re ever in Frankfurt and desperate for bbq, there’s a real option.

Went to Leroy & Lewis yesterday.  Never knew this place existed.  They definitely put alot of care into their presentation.  I am worried that their location on Stassney may be troublesome in the long-run.  Would think they'd get better traffic if they were somewhere off Manchaca (like Valentina's was).  Hope they dont get over their heads on the financial side.  But whatever, that's why I don't run my own business.

Down to the brass tax.  Brisket was good.  Mild in flavor, but a good cut of meat.  Jalapeño cheese chorizo was the bomb.  Tender & dry, which is liked.  The Texas red chili frito pie was orgasmic.  And again, the 3 beers didn't hurt either.

Would visit again.

Absolutely trust Evan, Sawyer and co on the transition to B&M. Know they put in a TON of work on it before the move. They also just got a star a few weeks ago!

Sent this spot to my expat buddy over there, he said a place called Smoke BBQ in Dusseldorf is also excellent depending on where you are located in country

Burnt Bean is outstanding.

Reese Bros in San Antonio would be great as well.  I don't remember if they have inside seating, though ‐ so that would be a consideration depending on the weather.

What’s necessary arrival time for Reese? I know for brunt bean I’ll need to get there around 1030 or so.

I lived in Darmstadt as a kid, so this hits close to home.

Micklethwait Barbecue recently moved from the trailer they've been serving out of for over a decade to a brick and mortar (actually an old wood church).  A buddy and I stopped by Sunday afternoon after a morning of fishing on the Guadalupe.  I failed to take any meaningful pictures, so I almost didn't do a post.  However, I thought it was worth noting the new location and the report on the barbecue.

Got there about 1:00 and there were probably a half dozen people in line ahead of us.  Mainly east Austin hipsters.  Like the previous location, you order and wait for them to call your name.  Unlike the previous location, it was pretty efficient and only about a 3-4 minute wait for food.  This new location has inside seating and a nice, large outdoor eating space.

Right before we got to order, they crossed out one of the daily specials - vegetarian tamales (see note about hipsters above).  We both ordered 2 meat plates with moist brisket and pork ribs.  Four sides were green chile grits, mac & cheese, braised greens, and green bean salad.   My buddy, from New Mexico, said the grits were great (I didn't ask about the mac & cheese).  Greens were good and the green bean salad, which consisted of roasted whole green beans tossed with everything bagel spices and chilled, was really good.  Even though we both ordered the same two meats, he got two pork ribs and I only got one.  Giving them the benefit of the doubt that the weight was close, though.  Ribs were cooked perfectly and well seasoned with salt and pepper or possibly SPG.  I was not impressed with the brisket - one very thick slice per plate.  Micklethwait knows how to cook brisket and the thick slice was easy to pull apart and eat with a great bark.  Although, the end of my slice was a little dry.

Back in 2017 and for a few years after, Micklethwait was probably my favorite Austin barbecue joint.  Its not so much that Micklethwait has dropped as so many others have entered the chat - LeRoy & Lewis, Interstellar, KG BBQ, Mum . . .

It's worth checking out if you haven't been and I'll definitely go back.

Welp, I thought it was early aughts, but looking at their website, it appears I may have the wrong business.  Now I'm curious as to who it was...

There was a BBQ outfit that was in the old ass building next to Bongo's and they had to move out when the building was to be demolished for the apartments there now (24th/San Gabriel).  They were pretty proud of their cue (higher than avg prices) and it was pretty hipster, w/ a craft cocktail menu as well.

Anyone remember that spot and who it was?  Could have sworn it was Micklethwait, but I'm sure it won't be the last time I'm wrong.

Freedmen's.  It was actually quite good, I had it many many tiers higher than Mickelthwait which was quite disappointing the 2 times I gave them a chance. Their messed up ordering system resulted in extremely long waits, for cold food.  It was bizarre and I never went back.
