Stopped at Kolacny's Bar-B-Q House in Halletville yesterday on the way to El Campo.  This is a place listed in the 2021 TM BBQ Honorable mention and receives good reviews throughout those who like obscure, old-school barbecue - like the podcasters on Tales From the Pits.  We got there around 1:00 following quite a rush.  The original owners, Ervin and Carolyn, were manning the shop because the son and daughter-in-law, who now run the joint, were catering for a funeral.  I really wanted to try the pork steak, but unfortunately Ervin said that the only thing they had left was two rings of sausage.  Of course I got those two sausage rings and they were great.  Course ground with a perfect snap.  I'm looking forward to finishing the sausage this afternoon with a stack of saltines.

Although its out of the way for almost anyone, I will go back (probably paired with a trip to Shiner).  If Halletsville is on your way somewhere, its worth the stop.

Even if all meats were available, I probably would have only bought pork steak, sausage, and a half chicken.  I don't go to places like this for brisket, which many places have perfected.  I go for the simple food cooked in a manner that it has been cooked since the 1800s.  The same reason I grab a sausage ring from Smitty's when I'm in Lockhart.

I heard they pay $2.50 down in Halletsville, $3, maybe more...

@Pdawg88 congrats on your son signing to play football.

Although it is a good reminder to being grateful for the real Texas barbecue available to most of us, there are at least two other threads dedicated to non-Texas or other state's barbecue.  There actually might be some other recommendations for your son in and around OK.

I do apologize, I wasn’t  aware there were other BBQ threads. This is the only one I’ve ever seen. I live here in OKC and there are only two places that I have been to that are even close to a Texas style bbq. One is actually a couple guys from Austin, called Edgecraft. It is really good. And my favorite one in Oklahoma is about 30 minutes northeast in a town called Wellston. And it’s  Butcher BBQ. That place is amazing.

Without having to go back through, can anyone give me anywhere worth hitting while I’m driving from Laredo to Houston? Will be spending a night in Laredo, Victoria, and Sinton if there’s anything in those towns particularly.

Lavaca BBQ in Port Lavaca was on TX Monthly most recent top 50. Doesn’t look too far out of the way.

Truth, in Houston, is pretty good supposedly.  Toward the end of your drive though.  Safe travels.

Check out Edge Craft next time (if in OKC). Good enough to stand up with a top tier Texas place.

one other possibility, a place i've stopped at 100's of times, it's not top 50 or anything but hinze's in Wharton. the og off 59 burned down and they opened a smaller spot in town. bbq chicken, great sides and pies. i've never had the brisket there

Reese Bros is near the Alamodome and is easily one of the top two places in San Antonio, probably number one.

Yeah I live here, I eat there a couple times a month. They got in trouble a couple weeks ago. The owner was keeping all of the tips, he owed a bunch of employees over $60k. Still has great food.

Flying in so was hoping for something nearby.

Curry Bros green curry with brisket is one of my top 5 meals in Texas. If you want something different. Also in a great neighborhood that has a tone of bars and restaurants.
Owned by some badass Longhorn grads.

old man rant here - back in my hs days, victoria had A&B bbq off pleasant green rd. they were part of the mumford family. black couple older than dirt. open 3 days a week, just something to keep them busy.

Ill die on this hill - at the time, it was a top 3 place in the state. better than anything in lockhart.

their property / fence line was full of dewberries. she'd go out and pick them early for her cobbler. but the bbq was the show. spot on perfect, every time. he used the the fast and hot method, and that brisket was perfection. ribs and sausage were spot on. scoop of potato salad and beans. i'm probably the only poster here that ate there

A one-minute drive but a 21-minute walk to go .4 miles?

It's a weird Google maps thing where I told it the alamodome and it picked some arbitrary locstion within that area

Either way, I would NOT recommend that walk. Just Uber.

I-44 not I-40. Wellston is off the Turner turnpike

That's probably the walk back, dragging ass due to overindulgence on delicious BBQ.

Mum Foods and Smokehouse for lunch today.  Two meat plate with pork rib, moist brisket, coleslaw, and collard greens.

20250207_121540.thumb.jpg.e8d225110b86fc6999c8b4c1580f2252.jpg

The brisket was great with a solid, flavorful bark.  Although it had a well seasoned bark, the pork rib was dry.  Both sides were good.

Took home a pound of pastrami - which was the reason for going in the first place.

In hindsight, I should have eaten lunch at KG BBQ and grabbed the pastrami from Mum.

In San Antonio, the only reason I’m passing by bill miller without stopping is because I’m already on my way to Fred’s fish.

Was it dry because you didn’t let them put on the finishing sauce?

No.  It was dry and they put the finishing sauce.  I asked the guy when I ordered of they did that and he said no, but it was clearly on there.

I'm not getting ribs at mum's anymore.
