A one-minute drive but a 21-minute walk to go .4 miles?

The walk back maybe…

That's probably the walk back, dragging ass due to overindulgence on delicious BBQ.

Damn it…a day late and a dollar short.

Stopped by Micklethwait today.  Got there song 10:50 and there was no line; 10 minutes after opening there were 25 people in line.

Three meat plate with moist brisket, pork rib, poblano ranch sausage, mac & cheese, and green bean salad.

20250209_111057.thumb.jpg.56fb053685cdbb4e7fa3b989873062f5.jpg

Also ordered pork steak with braised greens.

Unlike my visit a month or so ago, everything was great.   Thick cut brisket was moist with a great bark.   Pork rib had a prefect bite and flavor although not overly seasoned.   Sausage was good as were the sides.

Pork steak was great.   Asian inspired seasoning with chili oil, seseme seeds, and other stuff.  The only draw back was the pork steak came from the kitchen and took 10 minutes longer than the other tray.   We'll worth it though.

I’m boys I’ll be back in Dallas tomorrow, Depp Ellum area. Went to Pecan lodge last time after being talked out of Terry Blacks. I’m hell bent on going to Terrys tomorrow. What is the proper order for a gentleman? My normal play is 1/2lb brisket, couple ribs, and a sausage and two sides. But I want to do I right so I am open to options.

That is spot on - Texas Trinity and some sides.

If a place has a specialty, I'll usually try that too.  I only order sausage from places that make their sausage in house.

Yeah, if you opt against sausage, there's always the beef rib.  I tend to opt against it because I can barely stomach anything else afterward, but I've had theirs (from the Dallas location), and it was great.

Anyone been to Snow's lately as to time to get there before selling out etc?

We got there around 5:15 and were 47 and 48 in line. Within 20-30 minutes the line more than doubled in size. They opened the doors at 7:25 and we sat down with our food less than an hour later.

Hate it for them, but the writing was on the wall.  Spent way too much $$ improving an existing B&M building....right when COVID hit.....then never really were able to keep it full.

Steel buildings or cheap fixer upper bombouts are the only thing you need to spend money on for a BBQ joint.

Did not disappoint. Probably some of the BBQ I’ve ever had.

To my point.....for the most part, the delta of "how delicious is this?" among all of the "higher-end" BBQ joints is so small as to not matter at all.  For those of us who remember the days of there being maybe 8-10 really good bbq restaurants in the whole fucking STATE, the fact that there are probably 15 places in Austin alone where you can get a bite of BBQ that would make anyone who is not a deeply experienced BBQ snob say "holy shit, that's fucking amazing" is huge.

Put it another way, get in a time machine, and drop Terry Blacks in Austin 20 years ago.  It would be the most celebrated restaurant, not just bbq restaurant, in town.  For good reason -- it's fucking delicious.

And SO much this.  Because in the end, in spite of how ridiculously snobbified it's become, and how high the prices have soared....it's still fucking BBQ, man.  Find a long-abandoned Dairy Queen, add some second-hand picnic tables outside, and go to town.

I want one of those WWII 1/2 circle hanger buildings with a covered pit room out back and some janky ass Christmas lights strung through the ceiling, with wooden picnic tables and a swamp cooler.   It's BBQ.  Part of the mystique is its utter simplicity.  Having a granite or marble topped bar with Pappy 23 doesn't do shit for me there.  I want a 1958 roll/slide top cooler with the coldest Lone Star 16oz cans you can find and a perfect salt/pepper/garlic bark on my pieces of artery clog.

My man.

The term you're looking for is "Quonset hut," by the way.  And that would be perfect.

I'm a big fan of the joints that are built into old gas stations.

cheap steel building + outside picnic tables = the G Wagon in Little River Academy.  it's best to follow their Facebook page to make sure they are open and not sold out.  10/10, highly recommend

Pretty sure I watched this guy take that pic from a couple tables over. He should have gone with the chocolate chip bread pudding over the banana pudding. That homemade pita with the whipped feta dipping sauce was incredible. I wasn’t a huge fan of the beef koobideh sausage that came with the pita.

I agree overall though that it’s in the running for best in Texas.

But that bar goes so well with $35/lb brisket and $6 sides. Plus, who wants to drive their pristine $100k Ford F-150 to some dumpy looking joint.

Hey where are y'all getting smoking wood in Austin?  I've gone to Harley's at Anderson Mill/183 for over a decade, but last time I was there a couple of months ago he said he was going to be closing up, and I think that's now done.

Specifically I'm looking for pecan, but in general I guess I need to find a new source.

These guys apparently have a south Austin warehouse.  No idea how good their pricing is.  They sell logs, if that works for your smoker.

Thanks.  Yeah I run a large offset.  It's my wedding dowry from my father in law. :)

I guess I should specify I'm ideally looking in NW Austin/CP but for good deals I can certainly travel and just stock up.

Yeah, I actually know Harley's grandson, and he let me know that was coming -- Harley had a set amount of firewood in his home yard left to sell, and when he sold it all, he was shutting things down.  Big bummer.

If you find a new place on the NW side, let us know.

Argh, also looks like they only deliver and I'm "just a bit outside" of the delivery range.

Seems an odd business practice -- "hey I want to buy some pecan, can I come pick it up?"  "No."

Meet them in a parking lot within their delivery zone?

That might work. I'll look for a closer option but beggars can't be choosers.

Thanks, appreciate it.

I'm planning on smoking some yardbird tomorrow so I just wanted it taken care of, so I snagged some pecan from Academy.  It wasn't cheap but hey, BBQ is now an expensive endeavor so what are you gonna do?

Burnt Bean excellent again today. They had a Barbacoa boudin with a special sauce that was a sweet heat that was really fucking good. Tejano brisket taco, bacon ranch taters, street corn pudding all excellent additions to the Trinity. db3ed93b1040f00c95702647f259bda1.jpg

DQ is shutting a shitton of stores in Texas. I expect most will be either bbq joints with a soft serve machine, or taco joints with a soft serve machine.
