Speaking of great bbq in that area, has anyone tried Black Gold yet?

I went a few months ago.  it was good but I doubt it sticks around.  they're trying to be fancy and bbq isn't fancy.

OK - it's been a LOOOOOOoooooonnnnnnnngggggg time since I ate beef ribs at Iron Works.

I honestly had forgotten about them. And then I remembered many stained dress shirts in the mid 80's.  Do they stack up anymore?   Lord I cannot even remember the last time I ordered a beef rib, and I know when I did it was at Iron Works.   Please tell me it's at least good enough to get my nostalgia on to make it worth the parking.

The great thing about Austin and the surrounding area, is you can't make a living long with sub-par BBQ. But at $20+ a pound... it better be good!

Anyhow appreciate feedback on if should check out iron Works again. or tell me where else to get a beef rib plate?

I was in there a couple years ago.  it's fine for a chopped beef sandwich and some nostalgia.  do not get a beef rib plate.  it's pretty similar to county line beef rib quality, and after the scene changed it simply is not worth it to ever pay for that crap again.

This.  Plus, if you serve it on a plate, it sucks the heat right out of it.  The tray with butcher paper isn't just aesthetics.

Patillo's rib and brisket sausage plate in Beaumont. Some of the best ribs I've had.

I enjoyed Panther City BBQ as well.  Its been a few years, so I'll defer to @GreenspointTexas if there has been a decline.

I have to drive from Austin to San Antonio Sunday afternoon. If I roll into Seguin around 3 or 4:00, will there be anything left at Burnt Bean or are they one of those places that run out of meat by 1:00?

I wouldn't expect anything that late, but that is just a guess.  I say FAFO and report back.

I quit on Panther City when they were shut down by the health dept. For a rat infestation.

add

Terry Blacks Ft Worth

Smoke n Ash (Michelin recognized Tex-Ethiopian barbecue in Arlington. I enjoy it and you won’t find it anywhere else in the world)

Hit InterStellar BBQ today.   Arrive around 9:35 and was roughly 25th in line.

About 10:15 the line was considerably longer.

This was my first time since the Michelin Star.  Not sure if this is the new normal or its a product of SXSW.  Lots of groups.

Most of my order was to go, so no pictures.  I like to try the specials which today is the piri piri chicken which was amazing.

Brisket, pork ribs, mac & cheese, jalapeño slaw, free charro beans, and peach tea glazed pork belly for dinner.  Also grabbed a couple links of the 1963 polish sausage to eat on a future date with saurkraut.

One of the guys in front of me literally ordered everything on the menu and not just a taste of everything.  Two beef ribs with chimichurri, brisket, all three sausages, . . . pints of all sides and every dessert.  I thought he was meeting ten other people, but it was all for him.  Obviously he didn't eat it all, but he was trying a few bites of everything.

so I’ve only been to louie mueller’s in taylor once and it was 20 years ago in college and I was probably drunk and/or high.  y’all are saying it’s not that good outside of the beef rib?

Yes.   And there are plenty of better places doing beef ribs now.

it’s still nice to go on the hill and enjoy the view and eat a lot of chopped beef and sausage and bread covered in sauce.

I like just going there for a drink and sitting outside. Should have done that this evening!

Yup, back ribs at CL.  I haven't bothered with them since maybe 1991.  The bread is tasty though.

In college, my buddies and I once saved up for a mid-week AYCE feast at CL. Didn't eat dinner the night before, didn't eat that day.  We went.  We gorged.  One of my buddies weighed himself before and after.  He gained 9 lbs at dinner.  Now, some of that was iced tea weight, but still....man, when we were 19-20, we could put the grub away something serious.  And we thought it was the best shit ever.

BBQ in Texas, and in Austin in particular, has come a LONG way in 30 years.
