ESPN's Get Up!

I've watched it a little bit.  Most shows like this take time to develop so I'll give them a little bit of time to get it going.

It's miles better than what Mike & Mike devolved into and it's A MILLION miles better than the Golic & Wingo show, which is just complete garbage for the most part.

The Dan Patrick Show remains by far the best national morning sports talk show.

At least there are a TON of commercials.

Jalen is terrible on the radio. Idk what made anyone think he would do better in this format.

Golic n wingo is weak too (too little sports). I wonder if Fox has a morning show.

They do, with Cris Carter and some other guy and it's also awful.

Nick Wright would be the other guy....Total race baiting douche. Matter a fact Nick Wright was the radio guy that Tom Herman got into a piss match with in Houston and declined a lunch date to bury the hatchet.

Down 20% in ratings compared to Sportcenters from same time last year.

While it may be true that Get Up didn’t get the borderline obscene promotion that past ESPN launches like SC6 received, don’t let anyone tell you this was a soft launch. If you watch ESPN every day, you have seen ads for Get Up featuring a talking baby or cup of coffee an agonizing amount of times. Greenberg, Beadle, and Rose are making nearly $15 million combined, the incremental New York studio and union production costs are not inexpensive, a cash cow radio show was broken up to make way for this program, and they are losing nearly a fifth of the viewers from a show that ESPN executives were evidently displeased with the performance of because they deemed that it needed dire upheaval.

Before it launched, the show’s producer Bill Wolff told the New York Times, “We need to try to increase the number of viewers that come to us. That’s measurable. That’s tangible.”

A month in, the decrease has been measurable and tangible.

I like Jalen and Beadle.  They at least have unique points of view.  Mike Greenberg sucks, though.  He’s safe, down-the-middle, and boring.  He says whatever gets a nod of approval from middle America. Mike Greenberg on TV in a cardigan hosting his own show is so risk-averse it’s pathetic.  Glad to hear it’s failing.

Mike Golic JR is the worst. I went to HS with a bunch of guys like him. Rich kids with privileged lives who have one single world view that shapes every argument and take that they make. The kind of guy who would say that Vince was responsible for everything that happened in Tennessee, and that at the end of the day if VY had just kept his head down and worked harder everything would have been okay.

Also I had this Get Up program on innthe bacgkround a couple of mornings ago. It was dumb. There wasn’t enough chemistry there, it’s like everyone is still feeling everybody out, despite having been coworkers in some capacity  for years.

Oh God! Get up is mediocre @ best, but I just don’t know what else u can do with mild mannered Greeny, basketball driven Jalen & a USES TO BE SEXY BEADLE, who usually doesn’t even take the time to do her hair, now that she has hit the “pinnacle” of ESPN shows.

BUT Golic & Wingo & Golic (jr) are far worse! How in the hell did they blatantly let this happen. I saw it coming I guess, when he first started doing guest appearances about 2 years ago under the deception he was still trying out to become a lineman. Anyone could see where this was going. Must b nice having a Dad who cannot only get u a job, but a NICE job at the WORLDWIDE LEADER & bypass dozens of far more deserving people who have been toiling away for such an opportunity

ESPN fucked up...should have renewed/rehired CC and put him on this show with Greeny...their chemistry was always really good on Mike & Mike.  Think that would have been infinitely better.  Beadle and Jalen belong on NBA only broadcasts...neither can offer anything except for NBA opinions.  Heard them the other day talking about hockey and it was just odd.

I used to listen to Mike and Mike, but Golic and Wingo is terrible.  Wingo is a total douche, who's Greenberg impression gets very tired quickly.

Dan Lebatard still has a fun show.  He lucked into the 9am slot, after the CC debacle, but has probably the most entertaining show on ESPN Radio.

LoL McCroskey. Agreed. BTW the only hosts who talked hockey are Steve Levy & the dude who passed away, who did the Sports Reporters (Rest in Peace!). Most shows don’t even attempt it.

They did F up. Greed will get ya every time. Carter MAY have been okay w Greeny, but he is difficult to watch on Fox, now that he is driving the show. VERY VERY arrogant & constantly talks about how great he was (he was above average only). I only tune in now about once a week.

Don’t think there is a way to save it at this point

It’s also awkward having 3 Type A’s on 1 show. At least Golic played at being the big dumb jock & let Greeny pilot the show. It worked.

BUT Golic & Wingo & Golic (jr) are far worse! Wingo is pompous & overrated on EVERY format he appears on.

As for Jr, how in the hell did they blatantly let this nepotism happen?? Wingo just seems like he Is trying to hard. I’ve never really like him for some reason that I can’t explain. ESPN radio used to be awesome when it had Mike&Mike, Cowherd, and The SVP/Rusillo show. I miss those days.

Tony K and DP were the golden years of ESPN radio. SVP and Rusillo were great.

I haven't listened to anything on ESPN radio since Rusillo left. I can't stand Lebatard for some reason.

I honestly don’t understand how anyone can have interest in listening to two strangers talk or debate about sports.  I mean I get listening to something local like UT sports or The Ticket (for Dallas sports), but why would anyone care what some random douche from Boston thinks about Lebron James?  Even if you’re a Cav fan and are interested, do you really sit through 45 other mins of talk about non-local or non-favorite teams?

I don't think you meant your comment this way, but you explained why I liked Mike & Mike.  I have no desire to listen to anyone on the radio talk about my team.  I've got message boards for that.  And I don't want to hear moron callers or moron local hosts talk about the longhorns.  To quote Ron Swanson, "I know more than you."  Mike and Mike was great because it was an inch deep and a mile wide.  Just national guests talking about national topics.  I try to listen to Wingo & Golic because the other Houston options are not great--John and Lance are the best of the bunch, but still don't entertain me a ton, Josh Innes will not get a minute of my time, and I don't care about the Texans, so 610 is out--but it's just not that good.

Will Cain is pretty good.  He reminds me a lot of Cowherd, in that he will take bold stands that are backed by logic and hold true.  He's kind of whiney in his approach, but I get tired of the down the constant down the middle pitches.

I get that and I didn’t mean it as a criticism.  Hell, unlike many, I can listen to random political shows all day.  I guess when it comes to sports, I either want to hear about my team(s) or none at all.  For example, I freaking loved national sports talk shows leading up to the 2005 Rose Bowl.  As it is now,  all my teams suck ass so that could have something to do with it.

This is the exact reason I hate ESPN radio. Everything has to be edgy fucking hot takes. Just have a normal conversation, enough with the made up BS to try and get one side or another pissed off. It's beyond annoying.

lebatard's show is pretty good but...

in 60 minutes they will have at least 40 minutes of commercials. no exaggeration. 12-15 min break then come back to endless live reads.. i cant listen to that shit at all. i pay for fucking satellite radio.

i was trying to listen because they had Dennis Miller on one time. Dan asked Dennis if he could stay through a break. They come back and all Dennis could talk about was how in the fuck does anybody listen when you have a 12 minute commercial?

It’s funny that you hear all the time about how ESPN is suffering because the old sportscenter formula is obsolete, but whenever they try something different like this or SC6 it bombs and does way worse than regular sportscenter.

The truth is they just have too many channels and airtime to fill.  I would say talk shows are probably cheaper ways to fill the time than world’s strongest man and wide world of sports oddball stuff that is actually entertaining, but if they’re paying Rose, Beadle and Greenberg $15 million then that probably isn’t even true.  What a mess.

They overpaid for a lot of their live sports programming, they didn't foresee cord cutting and therefore over baked their growth assumptions, they have too many channels, and didn't foresee sports highlights are more easily consumed online, and now they're scrambling for eyeballs anywhere and everywhere..... Basically they didn't understand or have the vision of what the internet was going to do to their older business model and are out of throwing shit at the wall.... They oversaturate their market with a good idea too.... PTI was great, then they cloned the formula and put it on for 20 hours a day.  Reminds me of that Michael Keaton movie, Multiplicity.  The clones are pale comparisons....

i liked mike and mike because it wasn't two guys giving hot takes for 4 hours a day.  it was just two guys talking sports.  i didn't really care that it wasn't all that in depth, because i have podcasts for the stuff i really care about, but mike and mike was a solid show to have on as background noise.

wingo is just awful though and golic jr. isn't much, if any, better.  it's weird because when people would sub in on mike and mike i never really thought there was much drop off, but you notice the drop off immediately when wingo became a permanent fixture.

get up is kind of meh, but i like it better than golic and wingo.  greenberg doesn't much care about anything but the boring ass nfl and golf though so it's kind of eye rolling when he tries and give informed takes on things like the nba.

I've only seen a few snippets of this show but it seems fairly benign..... I will say the combination seems weird if you're looking for broader appeal.  Yes, Beadle is a woman and for 42/43 looks fine and credibility as a sports commentator, but she and Jalen are basketball centric.  Shit, Jalen really only knows basketball.  Beadle at least knows some about hockey and likes wrestling and pop culture.  Greenberg cut his teeth as the Bulls beat writer so he basketball was his in but he's more of a football guy, although let's face it, he doesn't really know much of anything.  He's a younger, dumber, less funny, pale imitation of Tony Kornheiser, but benign.  I don't know if this was the best lineup.  Beadle and Greenberg seem to bring the same kind of wistful anchor type of personality.  Jalen is a specialist (like Barry Melrose is to hockey or Tim Kurkijan is to baseball) and can't imagine what he'll bring during baseball and football season.  He doesn't know much about pop culture and seems lost half the time..... Greenberg is the star here so he'll stay but they may need to replace Rose and maybe even Beadle eventually although ESPN probably doesn't want to burn the female demo it's not getting..... I don't really care much but I do remember when they announced it and wondered how they would mesh.  Seems they wanted a Neapolitan cast for the mornings....

Man, at some point, you have to blame the audience, not ESPN. They didn't set out to plaster Skip Bayless and other talking heads screaming at each other all over their network. Cold Pizza predates almost all of this. A topical, 2hr (might have even been 3?) morning show with some light sports as the backdrop. Back then, First Take was called 1st and 10, and it was just Skip and Woody going back and forth for a few minutes at a time, spread out throughout Cold Pizza. They were just the sideshow. Then, people decided that they liked the two crazy dudes yelling at each other, and ESPN started compiling their segments and re-airing them in the afternoon on a half hour show. That got better ratings than Cold Pizza, so they started giving 1st and 10 more and more time, until they pretty quickly just gave them the entire show and renamed it First Take. And now, here we are.

The Twitter and YouTube culture (which weren't really even things back then) is just as much to blame for their current programming as ESPN. ESPN did try, but people wanted their steaming hot takes. Hard to blame any network for succumbing to ratings.

Conversely, I find The Jump to be very good (although they bring on a few too many former players who can't put two sentences together...what up, Stephen Jackson) as a much more positive, light-hearted talkshow (with a really good female host, no less!). But it's stuck in the 3pm Eastern Time slot--even during the basketball season--so I can't imagine its ratings are blowing anyone's socks off.

Agree with most of you.  Get Up is terrible.  Most of ESPN sucks.  Used to like Mike & Mike, but also heard Golic and Greenberg had a strained relationship towards the end.  Most sports TV (cable) sucks, especially ESPN.  Really like CBS Sports radio and most of FOX Sports radio.

I followed the Get Up! saga closely from pretty much the moment rumors started circulating about the end of Mike and Mike until now and the disaster with this runs deep.

1) Something that's not getting much talk is just how much internal pressure having a set like the one they have off of Pier 17 in NYC. Nobody and I mean, NOBODY wants to live in Bristol/Hartford. With the salaries ESPN pays up front talent, all of them could afford to live in Manhattan, which is a significant increase in the quality of life factor. So, to see a brand new show get such a plum set, you've had others (namely, Stephen A.) clamoring for a relocation. My understanding is that they do have room for more than one show, so which shows get to go and which will be left behind will also create problems for ESPN.

Nobody wants to miss the last flight out of Saigon.

2) To those mentioning the lack of diversity in knowledge of the hosts, this is not without design. ESPN is going to get out of the NFL business the moment the current Monday night deal expires, so pushing the NBA (and MLB) year round, allows for them to stay topical. Look for ESPN to become  the NBA/MLB network on steroids in the next decade as they bet heavily on the demise of the NFL.

Another factor, all 3 hosts are over-40 and for a network trying to stay relevant to a younger audience, this factor alone surprised me. I thought for sure that Katie Nolan would have been the co-host, but apparently, she doesn't like doing anything live and didn't want to get up that early (they have to be on set every morning by 5AM EST). Still, Jalen Rose has no connection to the players today and he's not funny enough or a large enough personality to be a voice from a bygone era.

Greenberg is even worse than before. Previously, he could be Mr. Switzerland or simply side with the popular opinion and let Golic do the heavy lifting of being contrarian. But in Beadle and Jalen, he has two people who have ZERO interest in saying anything controversial about a major sports figure lest they lose access.

3) Cord cutting is an issue, but live sports still does a solid number on ESPN, so now they are just trying to find ways to fill the empty airtime.

4) And the biggest miss? If you're going to be in NYC, let the city work for you as more than just a great backdrop. Case in point, why did ESPN not have cameras live at the Barclays when Conor McGregor went on his rampage? It was known he was flying in and going to crash the weigh in, why not be there - camera in hand - in the even something crazy goes down. Well, since it did, all we have are crappy phone vids/images instead of high dollar ESPN equipment.

NYC always provides. Here's another one, Matt Harvey thinks he's dating Adrianna Lima until the Met Gala in 2017 when she talks weekend flight Julian Edleman with her to the event. This causes Harvey to flip out, he misses a throwing session, shows up late for a start and his Met death spiral has officially started. Is ESPN willing to report this type of stuff? If so, they can stay relevant, but if not, why be in NYC at all?

tl/dr? They call John Skipper "John Sniffer" for a reason.
