Julie Zauzmer Weil @juliezweil

Along with a huge team of @postlocal reporters, I spent the day at the polls in Virginia.

I was in western Prince William. Most people I met voted for Youngkin.

I just got home & I'm going through my notebook, so here's a thread of voters' quotes about why they picked Youngkin.

Julie Zauzmer Weil @juliezweil ·

1h A Latina mom who plans on sending her 4-year-old to private school to avoid public school education about race, which she believes motivates bullying: "Parents don’t really have a choice.... They are adding new things to history that children her age don’t really need to know."

Julie Zauzmer Weil @juliezweil · 1h A Black dad who's homeschooling two of his kids said his older son recently brought home an assignment on Abraham Lincoln that troubled him, though he couldn't say why. "I'd like to not vote for the guy who said it's not the parents' responsibility to take care of their kids."

Julie Zauzmer Weil @juliezweil ·

1h One man supported Youngkin's anti-abortion stance, saying he once conceived a child with a woman who chose an abortion. "I don’t know what my first child would have looked like because of a woman's right to choose.... I want to be able to go to court & say 'I want that baby.'"

Julie Zauzmer Weil @juliezweil ·

1h Another voter said he opposes mask and vaccine requirements. "I'm forced to vote Republican, grudgingly. I don’t even like this guy," he said, saying he supports abortion rights and finds Youngkin "self-righteous." But: "I'm tired of the mandates."

So the key issues for these voters apparently was critical race theory in schools, abortion, no more mask/vaccine mandates, and Abraham Lincoln assignments in school.  Tell me again that the people in America are intelligent.  This actually shows how good Fox News and right wing conservative radio is at getting their message out to the masses.

“You may be struggling financially, you can’t afford to send your kids to college, your geographic area is being flooded or burning because of the climate but you should forget all of that and be worried that your kids are being taught critical race theory which you have no idea what it is but it is really bad so vote Republican”.

This is my take. It’s a step away from Trumpism and that’s a wonderful thing for the gop and the country.

Youngkin never said anything negative about Trump during his entire campaign and he was perfectly fine having others like Amanda Chase spew Trumpian conspiracy theories during his campaign stops. Stop with this bullshit. Youngkin's win today has only strengthened Trump's influence with the GOP. He ain't Larry Hogan.

Youngkin won because the Democrats put a retread Candidate that the voters didn’t want . He went on record  stating parents shouldn’t be telling schools what they should be teaching.  And while parents shouldn’t be dictating the academic curriculum other than demanding it be as rigorous as possible, they do have the fucking right to protest schools teaching topics (right or wrong) they don’t agree with.

His comment is the typical govt knows best , and you’re just a bunch of rubes shut up and sit down. Fuck that noise.

That I’ll advised and arrogant as fuck  comment alone probably cost him the election.

it wasn’t abortion rights  or trotting out trump.

it was a pendulum swing from Biden and the Democrats because of the current situation people are laying at mr. Biden’s feet.

I have no problem with CRT when kept as a history class topic.  We need an honest accounting of our history.

Posters right here said Mc Auliffe  sucked, but dammit you’re an idiot for not voting for him.. MENSA right there … and typical partisan rhetoric.

EDIT : Sorry if it doesn’t fit your view of the world pen, but not sure you live in the real world anyway.

Actually I think it’s more sinister then that, the Koch and other foundations run focus groups to see what will trigger the ppl and to get them to vote R and blame it on Ds. They do extensive surveys to see how to best get them, the moms and schools with critical race seems to be the topic now. They did it with caravan, terry shivo back in the day.

I posted a whole back here;

Behind the Bastards podcast on Koch Brothers, Robert brought up how the Koch foundation put in a lot $$& on focus groups on how to get the ppl riled up and voting R, they also scared the suburbs voters back to R.

A good listen if you have time to kill, a 2 parter

He's going to claim it as a win and tell them to kiss the ring.  The only way the Dems don't ruin themselves is if Trump somehow splits the Republicans.  Trump will not go peacefully into the night though, or maybe they can pay him to shut up since that's his primary concern.

Dems should look at tonight as the future for 2022 and 2024 (edit: if they don't quickly wise up.) But I could see some of them interpreting tonight as inevitable so they should go further left in legislation just to get something done.

I'm too lazy to look back here who said it here first, but tonight could also be looked at as just as much a rejection of Trump as Biden. Trump will claim victory for himself because that is what he's doing but the GOP should look at this that they really need to do whatever it takes to get Trump out of the picture.

the GOP is also good at taking a complex issue and just creating a simple message about it. Dems either spend 20 minutes explaining why the GOP is wrong about it, or they fail to comprehend that they're turning off the majority of Americans.

Nah. A dem sharpening their rhetoric against AOC in a normal district is not going to win either. You don’t win by pissing off a significant percentage rage of your base. There is no electoral upside in being antagonistic.

Yes, I just made a “both sides” post.   But it doesn’t take a sinister plot to make Americans pissed off at the people in charge.  Everyone focus groups attack messages, and if you don’t understand how lots of people can be troubled in good faith by things like CRT without ascribing it to ignorance or dirty tricks then you’re as much in your bubble as the guy applauding Tucker Carlson every night.

And I’ll preemptively suggest that saying, “Well, actually CRT in its academic form is defined as ______, so you and anyone else using it to describe what actually is happening in practice instead of what it’s supposed to mean must be a stupid racist rube” is not a great counter and campaign slogan.

As always bringing truth. Well said. All of this is good in my opinion

40 always Dems, 40 always GOP, 20 In the middle just wants no one to go too far one way or another and doesn’t want the boat rocked or fundamental change imo.

i'm stealing this from elsewhere because it's on point:

Quote

Well, if Dems talk too tough, then it's "cancel culture." What they really need to is wise up, stop taking the emotional bait, and just call out the bullshit.
For example, trying to explain that CRT wasn't actually being taught in schools only reinforced the false notion that CRT is scary. Instead, Dems should have just fired back with, What's wrong with teaching kids the history of all Americans?
But no, by reacting off-guard and on the defense, they allowed not just an election loss, but for the GOP to move forward with an agenda to indoctrinate kids with BS like blacks preferred being enslaved and Holocaust denialism deserves equal time in the classrooms.
And meanwhile, using cries of being against cancel culture (which is actually just private citizens expressing strong opinions they disagree with), the GOP is also moving forward with legislation to ban books and restrict free speech.
My suggestion is that Dems stop reacting emotionally and especially with the fucking namecalling. Instead, focus on legitimate and thoughtful critiques of what the GOP is actually doing, and please use the strongest words possible (they do).
And finally, always remember that while "the base" consists of people who would rather lose their jobs and/or take horse dewormer with no proven efficacy than a proven vaccine, the con artists who pull their strings are in no way stupid. That's a common mistake people make about con artists in general... that they must be stupid because you'd have to be stupid to believe them. When in fact the con artists are counting on your offended responses in order to convince their chumps to double down.

Dems blew it with CRT. The correct response from national Dem leaders should have been that no child was going to be taught a complex issue like CRT under their watch. No ifs, ands or buts. They allowed the GOP to run with a non-issue and rile up a crowd that is absolutely afraid of their children being taught far-left, evil, liberal ideas.

Someone may reply that that is exactly what some Dem leaders did say. And perhaps they did but I also bet that they either took 30 minutes to say that, or they were just dismissive of it that it was just a Fox News lie.

While I usually agree, nobody practices critical race theory at the level parents are debating.  That's not a real issue unless American History is a problem. And again, minority parents should go to the meetings and ask for input into their children's education and see what happens.

Wokeness isn't crushing anything--it can't even establish fair voting rights for everybody.  And cancel culture isn't nearly canceling as the Right, which controls states with a 40% vote.  Women can't even get freedom of choice, which seems like a right they should have, or involve outing the male and making him compensate for his dick half.

Wokeness, Cancel Culture, Critical Race Theory, Planned Parenthood, etc, can all be bottled and floated down it doesn't make a shit river because most of is created distortion.  Black Lives Matter is a real concern that got diluted by All Lives Matter, Blue Lives Matter, Wokeness, and other names.  Meanwhile Kyle Rittenhouse is standing trial in front of a jackass judge that insists on making a show of it while we debate Cancel Culture and Critical Race Theory.  It's not even close to being both sides.

You're wanting me to agree with and accept your straw man CRT fears. None of your concerns are founded in reality, and when we talk about specifics and not general feelings and rhetoric it's consistently boiled down to "well I didn't know about Emmit Till!" or some other fundamental lack of knowledge on your part. Or conversely, your fears and concerns are NOT what CRT is about, and your fabrication of an alternate set of facts preempts any possible discussion.

It's just pure fucking propoganda. Should we start talking about how the nazis really weren't all that bad and the Holocaust didn't actually happen, like Texas school districts are starting to under new laws? Where does the rejection of reality end?
