Another perspective.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/2021/11/03/left-coalition-says-mcauliffe-campaign-was-controlled-experiment-what-not-do-2022

"As corporate Democrats rushed to baselessly pin McAuliffe's loss on progressives in Congress, the Battle Born Collective, Justice Democrats, the Sunrise Movement, and United We Dream Action argued in a joint statement that the former Virginia governor's campaign for his old post was "designed to fail."

"What happened in Virginia is what happens when Democrats fail to take on the GOP's divide-and-conquer racism and motivate people to turn out," the progressive coalition said. "The McAuliffe campaign had no comprehensive pro-worker economic message against a literal private equity magnate."

Far from offering Virginians a clear policy agenda and a positive vision for the future, McAuliffe—who previously served as chair of the Democratic National Committee—"ran the milquetoast campaign he wanted to run," the groups continued. "Every other word he uttered was 'Donald Trump' instead of focusing on the issues voters cared about the most."

"This was a controlled experiment for what NOT to do in 2022," the coalition added. "This is what it looks like when Democrats get caught flat-footed and let Republicans dictate the terms of the debate by manufacturing a fake 'education crisis.' It does not have to be this way. There is still time to adopt an inclusive economic message that crowds out racist dog whistles... This should be a wake-up call for Democrats: Give people something to vote for or watch yourselves become the very thing they resoundingly vote against."

The implication would be  the former given she got the ballot first, I'm guessing the middle thing is maybe what happened and they misunderstood.

I completely agree that the shambolic Democratic Congress hurt their state level candidates; and if they had managed to accomplish something it would have boosted their chances by association.

That said, the Governor of Virginia has shit to do with any of that legislation. He does have a lot to do with education in Virginia and unsurprisingly, the GOP seized on it, turned it into an emotional issue, and then cackled as their opponent told the parents of Virginia to stay the hell out of their own kids’ schools.

This column is the lowest form of political argument. A progressive coalition says more progressive politics are the answer, story at 10. They offer almost no data, and you have to realize that regardless of the outcome, this coalition would write the same gotdamn column: “the results of this election night show that our policies are the way forward.” It’s PR and not any sort of analysis.

Disagree. It defines the teams, of which there are three primary players presently - trumpers, neoliberal "centrists" and progressives.

The left (where DEI/CRT has backing) has zero power in this equation, because progressives occupy the lanes where the left might make inroads and progressives are not as hip on identity politics (one reason why the left hates progressives).

The neoliberal centrists hold the most power, with the trumpers in a close second.

In many ways, the 2021 VA Gov. election was a scaled down 2016 presidential election: A centrist neoliberal plugged into the Establishment and locked into the status quo v. an self-proclaimed outsider using culture war tactics. We know how those elections turn out (like they did in Virginia last night).

A candidate must stand for something other than "I am not Donald Trump."

2020 was a remarkable show of unity to beat Donald Trump. I am afraid that unity grows weaker each day.

Wow, do you have any idea as to the irony of your view? You’ve just called anyone that doesn’t agree with your progressive view point a political idiot.  That statement alone demonstrates more idiocy than many of the people you are complaining about.

There’s a reason 55-60%+ of this country doesn’t embrace all of the ideas of progressives and it isn’t because they are all idiots. Far from it. If it wasn’t for moderates in this country we’d have such extreme policies from each party that the country couldn’t even function.

Also the exact argument made against Pol Pot.   I guess it depends on whether the thing in question is actually so unjust and in need of change, and whether the proposed radical change is actually a good idea?

Like, maybe Jim Crow was worse than 2021 America?  And maybe the Civil Rights Act was a better idea than defunding the police?

A quick look at social and economic statistics illustrates quite convincingly that structural racism in the United States is unjust and in need of change. But at least it's better than the Jim Crow era.

No, you didn’t, actually.  You don’t think America was healthier between say ‘92 thru ‘16?  What significant advancements have been made from ‘16 thru present?

Expand

Well, no advancements happened between January 1, 2017 and January 1, 2021 because of the party of no and their orange god.  We took a massive step back post 9/11 thanks to the Patriot Act.  Citizens United also fucked all sorts of shit up.

There were improvements that both W and Obama tried to make (W with immigration, Obama with the ACA) that either failed miserably due to the right of his own party or was written poorly because lobbyists for the insurance industry wrote the damn thing.

However, the US really started going downhill with Nixon in the 70's.  Real wages stagnated, and still have never caught up.  Meanwhile, with the advent of trickle down economics, the wealth gap gets bigger and bigger.

I used to be like you.  But one thing that is apparent in NYC. I am well off, but I am nowhere near the ultra-rich here.  I may be white, but I am also a woman.  I have clawed my way in a male dominated industry, generally being paid 25-30% less than my male counterparts who do not have the experience or quite frankly the talent that I do.  So while I may not know what it is like to be a minority, I absolutely know what is like to not be taken seriously because of what isn't between my legs.

You arguments tell me all I need to know about you.

Um, no.  What I said, and I will type slowly since reading comprehension isn’t something you are good at, is that I am not going to PAY to fly to Amarillo, Texas to jump the line to get a shot since I am a New York State and city resident, and my tax dollars have gone to making sure that the vaccine is free for everyone.  Yeah, it sucked that appointments were that fucking backed up, but it was what it was.  Completely different argument, then again, you are a disingenuous asshole, so par for the course.

I refuse to step foot in the State of Texas since you all have decided to force women to carry children to term and allow any asshole to carry a gun.  Why the fuck would I ever contribute economically to that state?  My parents are aware of my stance.  Pretty fucking sure I am not alone in this either.  But you be you.
