I remember similar things being said when A'Shawn Robinson chose Bama.  Can't fault these guys wanting to be winners and get drafted early.  Herman hasn't done his part so we are going to miss on guys like this.

A'Shawn Robinson was also heinous. IIRC, our DT corch was Bo Davis at the time. The story goes Robinson and his mother asked Davis with help filling out his NLI to Bama.

EDIT: It just so happened that Bo Davis went back to Bama and ended up coaching A'Shawn. <sigh>

Texas has recruited well under Herman, but Farrell is not wrong, at some point Texas needs to land the "can't miss" guys in Texas.

Like Ewers next year, there is another recruit Texas needs to land, but won't because we're not there yet.

It took butterteeth 7 years to win a MNC. So, I don't get the Herman hasn't done his part. Mack might have missed on AP, but he got his fair share, enough to win a MNC with average coaching. Whatever the reason, Texas needs to do better in state and land guys like Little and Brock - they help Herman "do his part".

I’m not saying the odds a high but it would be quite hilarious is somehow Texas won a NC with Luke on the team and the other Brocks were on their 3rd o line coach at Bama with no NC.  Bama’s road is going to be much more treacherous with the Pirate and Kiffy coming on board.  It is usually funny how things work out.

Care to pass along your dealer's contact info?  I want some of this good shit.

Since 2015 we've signed 16 Texas Top-10 composite recruits. So a little more than 1/4 of the top 10 players in the state. And seven of those came in 2018, which means that for all other years we were signing only 18% of top-10 players in the state.

For in-state five-star players its even worse. We've signed 4 of 25 Texas five-stars. Just 16% of Texas five-stars over the last 6 classes.

That ain't gonna cut it. We need to be landing a higher percentage of both categories.

Aggie War Room: A&M locked in battles for pair of 2021 targets
ANDREW HATTERSLEY

While a dead period has prevented the Texas A&M staff being able to get out on the road and evaluate prospects in the class of 2022, the staff has been busy establishing some early relationships in that class while also focusing on closing out the 2021 cycle in strong fashion with some major targets left on the board.

In this week’s addition of the Aggie War Room, we give you the latest on a pair of key 2021 targets, as well as where things stand with a handful of prospects in the class of 2022.

2021 NOTES

(Photo: Twitter/@KendalDaniels__)

-Beggs (OK) safety Kendal Daniels announced last week he will announce his decision on Aug. 1. With just under two weeks to go until the four-star safety announces his decision, A&M remains locked in a battle with Oklahoma and Clemson for the nation’s No. 140 overall prospect, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. As of Sunday, there is not a clear indication of which way he is leaning, but A&M certainly remains strongly in the mix.

It would not be surprising to see this recruitment continue to go back and forth between now and when he makes a decision with all three schools selling him on different roles.

(Photo: Mike Roach, 247Sports)
- The Aggies also remain locked in a battle for DeSoto four-star defensive end Shemar Turner. After talking with a source close to Turner’s recruitment on Sunday, A&M, Texas and Alabama are the three schools who sit in the best position right now with LSU and Georgia remaining in the picture as well. I was told defensive ends coach Terry Price has continued to do a good job in Turner’s recruitment connecting with not only Turner but members of his family.

Defensive line coach Elijah Robinson has been involved to some extent as well but with the relationship Turner has already established with Price, he has led the charge in this recruitment. With how close things are among his top schools, Turner still wants to wait to see if he will be able to take visits later this fall before making a decision.

2022 NOTES

(Photo: Nick Harris, 247Sports)
- A virtual visit with A&M earlier this month caught the eye of Houston Cy Park outside linebacker Harold Perkins. The Aggies are one of a few schools standing early on with Perkins, along with Baylor, Florida, Texas and LSU. Perkins’ recruitment continues to remain open as he waits to get out and take a few visits before making any sort of decision. In the meantime, he has also done virtual visits with LSU, Oregon, Florida and has a few more coming up.

(Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports)
- A&M remains in frequent contact as well with a trio of 2022 lineman including Atascocita offensive tackle Kam Dewberry, Frisco offensive guard Cole Hutson and Deer Creek (OK) offensive tackle Jacob Sexton. Dewberry said Sunday he has been in frequent contact with A&M, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, and Georgia. The four-star offensive tackle still has plenty of time to go in the recruiting process and is currently not close to making a decision.

A&M offensive line coach Josh Henson has also built a strong early relationship with Hutson, who added the two talk just about every week right now. Hutson maintained his recruitment is wide open with his focus primarily on trying to build relationships with all the schools that have extended an offer to him.

In addition to the schools that have extended an offer already, Hudson said he has also talked with Penn State and Missouri. Henson also remains in frequent contact with Sexton, who said he tries to call every school that has offered him at least every week or two. The four-star offensive tackle first met Henson in 2018 and the two have continued to build a good relationship since then. The Deer Creek offensive lineman is in no hurry to make a decision and said he does not plan to cut down his list until before his senior year with a decision coming sometime after that.

(Photo: Jesse Tovar)
- El Paso Burges running back Tavorus Jones saw his recruitment take off this spring with Texas becoming the first school to offer Jones on April 20. Texas A&M was among those to extend an offer in mid-May and he has begun to build a relationship with Tommie Robinson. Once the dead period is lifted, Jones said he would likely visit Texas first since the Longhorns were the first school to offer him but has a busy slate of trips ahead with other trips planned to Florida, Alabama, Baylor and potentially a few other spots as well including Aggieland.

(Photo: Gabe Brooks, 247Sports)
- Texas A&M extended an offer to Denton Ryan cornerback Austin Jordan earlier this spring and the top-100 prospect has built a good early relationship with defensive backs coach TJ Rushing. The Aggies coaching staff has been pushing for Jordan to take a visit to Aggieland once the dead period is lifted and that is something, he has interest in doing as well. In addition to the Aggies, Jordan has been in contact with Texas and Oklahoma.

-Texas A&M has extended a handful of offers in the class of 2022 and are keeping an eye on a pair of Aggie legacies as well in Austin Westlake Cade Klubnik and Flower Mound’s Nick Evers. A&M likes both prospects and will be keeping an eye on both heading into this year. Klubnik was part of a trio of quarterbacks that saw extensive playing time for Westlake in the regular season, but an injury caused him to miss the run to the state championship. He is back healthy and is a name to keep an eye on. It’s a similar situation for Evers, who has had a strong summer but is somewhat of an unknown at the moment without a lot of film for coaches to evaluate but that should change this year. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound quarterback should see his recruitment begin to pick up over the next couple of months.

Did a little more digging. From 2000 - 2013, Mack Brown landed 59 top-ten Texas players out of 140 for an average of 42%. He landed the exact same number of in-state five-stars - 28 of 66. Only once in 14 years did Mack fail to land an in-state five-star and that was in 2008. We've failed to land an in-state five-star in four of the last seven years.

Not gonna cut it.

Nick Harris: Jalen Milroe talks commitment status and his recruiting efforts

Quote

CARROLLTON, Texas — Katy Tompkins' Texas commit Jalen Milroe was back in action this past weekend at Dallas' Pylon 7v7 tournament playing with the Houston-based KFA team. He helped lead them to the semifinals of the tournament before falling in overtime to the eventual champions Team Zap out of San Antonio.

Horns247 caught up with Milroe following his outing where he showed great improvement from his already impressive junior season. There had been rumors that he was more open to flipping to Alabama following the commitments of the Brockermeyer twins, but in talking to sources around him, it seems that those are just rumors at this point and he remains solid in his commitment to Texas.

"I'm loving the class right now," Milroe said. "We're really flexible with our offensive and defensive commits, but we're just steadily trying to build the up the class. We're trying to get some offensive linemen and receivers like Jaden Alexis, Bryce Foster and Savion Byrd."

Milroe has been hard on recruiting Alexis for the better part of the last three months as he works to land the second out-of-state receiver in the 2021 class. "Honestly right now just building a relationship with him, getting to know him," Milroe said. "He's out in Florida so we're just trying to get that relationship right now by telling him why I committed to Texas and hearing any questions he has because he could be leaving the state."

Milroe has stayed in constant communication with Texas by hopping on the phone or on Zoom multiple times a week with head coach Tom Herman and offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. "Right now, I'm just building that relationship since I wasn't able to get up there for spring ball," he said. "We're just steady in communication and just talking about what they're doing." In the meantime, Milroe has been working during the pandemic with his quarterback trainer and with his KFA team to get better for his senior season. "I'm always trying to get one-percent better every day," Milroe said. "The work I put in today is not for today, it's for tomorrow and the work I put in tomorrow is for the next day."

There is reason for concern any time a commit remains in contact with another school, especially with it being Alabama, but Milroe has not given any indication that his commitment to Texas is unsteady. He remains solid with the Longhorns and is actively working on the recruiting trail to help build the 2021 class. At 6-foot-1.5, 192 pounds, Milroe is the No. 83 recruit in the country for the class of 2021, according to 247Sports Composite. He is the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the country and the No. 10 recruit in the state of Texas.

Having the Damn aggys go to sec opened the door wider for state of Texas recruits to leave...

Even Buttertooth couldn't get 42% in-state in Texas now...

(Also aggy was bad during that stretch where "The Orange Slice Boogaloo" was dominating in-store recruiting in Texas)

Ranking college football's best QB rooms
BARTON SIMMONS

In a typical college football season, the backup quarterback is a big deal — at least it should be if you want to contend for championships of any kind.

During the 2018 season, Clemson rode its freshman backup Trevor Lawrence into the playoffs and Alabama needed backup heroics out of Jalen Hurts to sneak in. In 2017, a backup true freshman Tua Tagovailoa saved the day at halftime for Alabama to beat former backup Jake Fromm of Georgia. One year earlier in 2016 it was Hurts that entered the season as a backup at Alabama only to quickly take the starting job and lead the Tide to the playoffs. In 2014, Ohio State went all the way to third-string quarterback Cardale Jones to pull out a title run.

History tells us that any 2020 playoff is more likely than not to feature at least one quarterback that started the season as a backup. But that’s just a typical 2020 season and we are in a very atypical year. Given the challenges of the COVID-19 virus, this season will look different in a multitude of ways, including the possibility that outbreaks within the team could force rosters to dig deep into the bench at every position, including quarterback. So while an elite backup could be enough in most years to get to championship contention, this may be the year that third- and even fourth-string quarterbacks have an outsized impact.

With that in mind, we took a look at the top 25 quarterback rooms in college football. A quality starter is the minimum requirement to get on this list. We wanted to identify the healthiest rooms to absorb injury and adversity in the 2020 season as well as the programs that look well-suited to have quarterback success beyond 2020 and into 2021 and 2022.

1. CLEMSON
Trevor Lawrence
(Photo: Streeter Lecka, Getty)
Projected starter: Trevor Lawrence (Jr.)

Depth: D.J. Uiagalelei (Fr.), Taisun Phommachanh (rFr.)

Lawrence may be the most talented quarterback in the country and Uiagelelei may be the most talented backup in the country. Phommachahn was raw upon his arrival at Clemson but he was still a talented four-star prospect in his own right. Clemson can go three deep to win games and probably at least two deep to win national championships.

2. OHIO STATE

(Photo: Jamie Sabau, Getty)
Projected starter: Justin Fields (Jr.)

Depth: Gunnar Hoak (Grad), CJ Stroud (Fr.), Jack Miller (Fr.)

Last year one of the few weaknesses of Ohio State was a backup to Fields. That’s been addressed. If Fields goes down, there are three options this season and next year the job will pass on to Stroud or Miller. Whether this year or next, our belief is that Stroud is a special talent that will be ready when his number is called.

3. ALABAMA

(Bryce Young; Photo: Robert Hanashiro, USA TODAY Sports)
Projected starter: Jr Mac Jones (Jr.)

Depth: Bryce Young (Fr.), Paul Tyson (rFr.)

Jones is already battle-tested and proven. If he goes the distance as the starter for Alabama that is a great indicator as to Alabama’s success and his ability because there’s a stud nipping at his heels in Young, 247Sports’ top-ranked player in 2020.

4. TEXAS

(Hudson Card; Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)
Projected starter: Sr Sam Ehlinger (Sr.)

Depth: Casey Thompson (Soph.), Hudson Card (Fr.), Ja’Quinden Jackson (Fr.)

You know about Ehlinger. He's as experienced as any quarterback in college football, but Texas added two Top 100 talents behind him in the 2020 class in Card and Jackson. The youth, diversity of skillset and talent set up Texas to absorb some hits this fall and there’s confidence that at least one of those guys emerges as another top-tier talent beyond 2020.

5. GEORGIA
Jamie Newman
(Jamie Newman; Photo: Thomas Shea, USA TODAY Sports)
Projected starter: Jamie Newman (Sr.)

Depth: JT Daniels, (rSoph.), Stetson Bennett (Jr.), Dwan Mathis (rFr.), Carson Beck (Fr.)

Newman is an NFL talent. Daniels, who received immediate eligibility after his transfer from USC, is as well. Between Bennett, Mathis and Beck, Georgia has a lot of bodies that are capable of stepping in and performing.

6. FLORIDA

(Anthony Richardson; Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)
Projected starter: Kyle Trask (Sr.)

Depth: Emory Jones (Soph.), Anthony Richardson (Fr.)

Trask is proven and we’ve even seen Jones have some success in spot duty, but Florida gets a lofty ranking largely because of its third-string option. Richardson is a tremendous athlete who can win games under Dan Mullen even as a freshman if called upon, much the way Keytaon Thompson made Mississippi State competitive as a backup back in 2017.

7. STANFORD

(Davis Mills; Photo: Kirby Lee, USA TODAY Sports)
Projected starter: Davis Mills (Jr.)

Depth: Tanner McKee (Fr.), Jack West (rSoph.)

Now that he’s healthy, the talent that made Mills the top rated quarterback in the same class that boasted Tua Tagovailoa is starting to peak through. McKee was the No. 3 pro-style QB in the class of 2018, ranked behind only Trevor Lawrence and JT Daniels, and is off an LDS Mission to add a significant talent boost to the room.

8. NORTH CAROLINA

(Jacolby Criswell; Photo: Jim Hawkins/Inside Carolina)
Projected starter: Sam Howell (Soph.)

Depth: Jace Ruder (rSoph.), Jacolby Criswell (Fr.)

When Mack Brown secured the commitment of Criswell in the 2020 class despite pushes from other SEC powers, that was a huge development for security and depth this season and beyond. Howell is emerging into a star but Criswell is talented, too, and Ruder is a high-upside, athletic quarterback in his own right.

9. MINNESOTA

(Morgan; Photo: Dan Owen, 247Sports)
Projected starter: Tanner Morgan (rJr.)

Depth: Zach Annexstad (Soph.), Cole Kramer (rFr.), Jacob Clark (rFr.)

Morgan looked like one of the best quarterbacks in college football last fall and only one year earlier he lost the battle for the starting job to Annexstad. So that gives Minnesota two starter-caliber talents at quarterback and some young talent in the room as well.

10. IOWA STATE
Hunter Dekkers
(Dekkers; Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)
Projected starter: Brock Purdy (Jr.)

Depth: Hunter Dekkers (Fr.), Aidan Bouman (Fr.)

As Purdy enters perhaps his final season at Iowa State, Matt Campbell found some reinforcements just in time. Dekkers in particular looks like the next in line to continue some high quality quarterback play in Ames.

11. MISSISSIPPI STATE

Projected starter: KJ Costello (Sr.)

Depth: Garrett Shrader (Soph.), Jalen Mayden (rSoph.), Will Rogers (Fr.)

In 2018 at Stanford, Costello was one of the top quarterbacks in the country and he’ll have a chance to regain that form after an injury-plagued 2019 under Mike Leach. Behind him there is talent but Shrader isn’t a great fit for a Leach offense. Freshman Will Rogers is though and Mayden may be the backup most equipped to help right now.

12. WASHINGTON

Projected starter: Kevin Thomson (GRAD)

Depth: Jacob Sirmon (rSoph.), Dylan Morris (rFr.), Ethan Garbers (Fr.)

On the surface, Washington is recruiting at the quarterback position as well as anyone. There is consistent depth of formerly highly recruited players. This year Thomson, one of the top players in FCS in 2019, is looking like the starter while three former four-stars back him up. Garbers could be the arm of the future.

13. PENN STATE

Projected starter: Sean Clifford (Sr.)

Depth: Will Levis (Jr.), Tyquon Robertson (Soph.), Micah Bowens (Fr.)

Clifford is a capable starter but Penn State also has the peace of mind that Levis can step in and be effective. He’s big, athletic with a strong arm and it wasn’t until Levis entered the game against Ohio State that the Nittany Lions really threatened. He’s starter quality.

14. OLE MISS

Projected starter: John Rhys Plumlee (Soph.)

Depth: Matt Corral (rSoph.), Grant Tisdale (rFr.), Kade Renfro (Fr.)

The Ole Miss spring practices were among the most highly anticipated because of what it might have revealed about Lane Kiffin’s plans to utilize a quarterback room with two disparately talented quarterbacks in Corral and Plumlee. Renfro was also a quality addition to the room in the 2020 class as a highly recruited prospect late in the cycle.

15. SOUTHERN CAL

Projected starter: Kedon Slovis (Soph.)

Depth: Matt Fink (Sr.), Mo Hasan (Sr.)

Slovis is one of the top quarterbacks in college football but think about everything that's depleted USC's QB room in the last year. Bryce Young flipped his USC commitment to Alabama in the 2020 cycle, Jack Sears transferred to Boise State and JT Daniels transferred out to Georgia. Matt Fink had a win as a backup against Utah in 2020 and Vanderbilt transfer Mo Hasan has some athleticism but USC needs to hope Slovis stays on the field.

16. OKLAHOMA

Projected starter: Spencer Rattler (rFr.)

Depth: Tanner Mordecai (rSoph.), Chandler Morris (Fr.)

The unknown here is what’s holding the Sooners back. We expect Rattler to be really good when he hits the field and Mordecai and Morris both present promising options as backups but collectively the room has only attempted 41 college pass attempts.

(Graham Mertz; Photo: Brad Fedie, 247Sports)
17. WISCONSIN

Projected starter:  Jack Coan (Sr.)

Depth: Graham Mertz (Soph.), Chase Wolf (rSoph.)

It’s not a flashy room but Coan was extremely consistent and reliable in his first year as a starter last fall and that was after all the preseason buzz was around the freshman Mertz. In Coan and Mertz, Wisconsin can boast two quality arms.

1
COMMENTS
18. BAYLOR

Projected starter: Sr Charlie Brewer (Sr.)

Depth: Gerry Bohannon (Soph.), Jacob Zeno (rFr.), Blake Shapen (Fr.)

Brewer is a steady starter who has played a lot of football but behind him are a couple intriguing young talents, which is good because Brewer has had some trouble staying healthy throughout his career. Bohannon is a big lumbering athletic option while Zeno flashed a lot of ability as a freshman in the Big 12 Championship Game in relief last fall. There are at least three quarterbacks that Baylor appears comfortable with.

19. TEXAS A&M

Projected starter: Kellen Mond (Sr.)

Depth: Zach Calzada (rFr.), James Foster (Soph.), Haynes King (Fr.), Connor Blumrick (Jr.)

Texas A&M has a lot of arms at its disposal, and a lot of big arms at that. Calzada and Foster have cannons and Haynes King was a highly touted recruit in the 2020 class. But all of the backups are unknowns and Mond is an adventure as the starter.

20. VIRGINIA TECH

Projected starter: rJr Hendon Hooker (rJr.)

Depth: Quincy Patterson (rSoph.), Braxton Burmeister (rJr.), Knox Kadum (rFr.)

Justin Fuente built a high-upside quarterback room when he started taking commits like Hooker and Patterson. It was a play for the long game, because those guys weren’t ready early in their career. Last fall, the returns started to arrive with Hooker’s success and a lot of upside is still untapped in Patterson as well. This room should continue to evolve and improve.

21. OREGON

Projected starter: Tyler Shough (rSoph.)

Depth: Anthony Brown (GRAD), Cale Millen (rFr.), Jay Butterfield (Fr.)

The addition of Boston College graduate transfer Brown was huge for Oregon. Best case scenario is the four-star with three years of eligibility remaining in Shough wins the job but if not, Brown, an experienced starter is a strong option. The third and fourth stringers are young former four-stars.

22. MICHIGAN

Projected starter: Dylan McCaffrey (rJr.)

Depth: Joe Milton (rSoph.), Cade McNamara (rFr.), Dan Villari (Fr.)

Michigan has two quality starter candidates at quarterback in McCaffrey and Milton but neither is entirely proven at this point. It’s a bonus that McCaffrey and Milton offer up varying skillsets and there is some quality depth behind them as well.

23. NEBRASKA

Projected starter: Adrian Martinez (Jr.)

Depth: Luke McCaffrey (rFr.), Logan Smothers (Fr.)

Adrian Martinez looked like a budding star as a freshman but his sophomore season stalled some due in part to some nagging injuries. McCaffrey, during a redshirt campaign, was promising. There is significant upside in the room but a lot still to prove.

24. OKLAHOMA STATE

Projected starter: Spencer Sanders (rSoph.)

Depth: Shane Illingworth (Fr.), Peyton Thompson (Fr.)

Sanders had a bit of a breakout year last fall as a redshirt freshman. If he can take care of the football, he could be due for a big step forward in year two. Behind him, Oklahoma State recruited two quality freshmen, including Illingworth, the 247Sports Composite No. 6 pro-style passer in 2020.

25. ARKANSAS

Projected starter: Feleipe Franks (Sr.)

Depth: KJ Jefferson (rFr.), John Stephen Jones (rSoph.), Malik Hornsby (Fr.)

Franks isn’t perfect as a quarterback but he is very talented and has played in some big games. More importantly for Arkansas is that beyond Franks, Jefferson has shown a lot of promise, Jones can get you by in a pinch and Hornsby has a chance to be a national name in college football if things hit right.

Not saying I disagree, necessarily, but I don't think the playing field is set the way it was then. The SEC has busted the doors down thanks mostly to aggy, obviously. But then I just think with social media etc... it's so easy for these guys to stay super connected with so many more universities than before, through players, other commits and coaches etc...

BDF members Texas, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Baylor ahead of QB whisperer Jimbo!

How can that be??

Lulz.

(Jimbo the whisperer 6th in the SEC, 4th in the SECW.  Should feel right at home.)

I kinda think that's bullshit. The doors have always been open. Before Mack, top tier talent in state was regularly going to places like Miami, Florida State, Tennessee, Colorado, etc.  Hell, Ohio State has been killing it in Texas and they sure as shit aren't in the SEC. If Texas is winning and has a competent to great recruiter, the recruits are going to come. Of course, it's a bit of a chicken and egg thing if you need to win to get recruits, and need to get recruits to win.

That said, the perception of the conference was definitely hurt by defections of Nebraska, CU, MU and A&M. That has definitely done more damage to recruiting than specifically aggy joining the SEC and "opening up the doors to the state". And really, losing Nebraska was the much bigger deal. The conference becoming more regional (notwithstanding West Virginia), has not been a good thing.

Scoop - Nahlin/Wells

Quote

Texas is "hosting" a highly-sought after tight end today and lots of notes from the ESPN 300 Elite Underclassmen Camp from Durant, OK. Let's Scoop.

Gunnar Helm.. the three-star tight end from Cherry Creek HS in Englewood, CO will be in Austin today for his unofficial visit. Remember the dead period rules apply so he won’t be meeting with coaches. He'll make his way through town and probably campus. The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder with 28 offers, including Auburn, Georgia, Iowa, and Wisconsin, likes the Longhorns and the word on the street is he's close to a decision. UT wants another tight end in this class, and with the in-state crop down, going out-of-state looks to be the move.

Tavrous Jones... One of the top priorities for Texas in the class of 2022, the four-star from El Paso Burges is buying the Horns sales pitch today. At 6-foot, 190, Jones holds 11 offers, including Alabama, Florida, Mississippi State, Arizona State, and Baylor. But the two schools that are separating themselves today are UT are UF.

"Coach (Stan) Drayton is great," said Jones. "He's a great coach, great man, and like a father figure to me. His personality suits me well and he's determined to push me to a higher standard and improve. I talk to Texas all the time and Drayton is the real deal."

And the Gators?

"Another staff I have a great relationship with," Jones said. "I want to visit Gainsville and learn more about the program."

Jones was one of the top prospects in Durant, OK on Sunday. He's tallied over 1,800 total yards and 22 touchdowns for Burges before taking a junior snap. Take him and Jaydon Blue and be happy as a puppy with two peckers on NSD 2022.

Anthony Hill Jr... One of the 2023 participants, the Denton Ryan linebacker is legit. Alabama, LSU, and Michigan are his latest offers, and there's already a sense he might be SEC bound. Texas loves Hill and will pursue through the whistle. At 6-foot-2, 210, he'll start as a true sophomore for the Raiders.

Harold Perkins.... is ridiculous. At 6-foot-2, 190, the Cypress Park junior linebacker is rated as a four-star, but that might not stick. He's elite in every fashion and the top linebacker in Texas for his cycle. Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas A&M are on him hard and heavy. Let Coleman Hutzler ink a solid 2021 linebacking class and go all-in on Perkins. He's a freak amongst the freaks.

Jacob Sexton...The 6-foot-5, 285-pound four-star from Deer Creek HS in Edmond, OK is a load. With 17 offers, including OU, which I believe holds the early lead, this kid can move for his size. Texas and Herb Hand continue to build with Sexton, and he's eager to visit Austin when possible.

"Texas is doing a lot," said Sexton. "They are making me a priority and I can tell. Coach Hand is a wealth of knowledge."

Cole Hutson... Frisco's young offensive lineman with double-digit offers and impressive bloodlines came to compete. At 6-foot-5, 300, Hutson holds offers from Texas, TCU, OU, Oklahoma State, and Arizona State, where his father played collegiate baseball. Hutson is a self-motivated prospect that might look like a guard, but could probably play all three spots - C, G, T. Another relationship Herb Hand continues to work on and I think might actually be a soft leader.

"I always learn stuff when I speak with coach Hand," said Hutson. "He's big on the details and that's what really helps you at the next level."

Kam Dewberry... From the lineage of Humble Atascocita offensive linemen, the 2022 ball of clay looks better than his industry standard rating. After dropping in the rankings, the 6-foot-4, 310-pound four-star with 27 offers is on a mission. Ohio State, Georgia, and Texas are on him the hardest, and he not only loves Herb Hand, he listens to former Atascocita OL and future NFL draft pick Sam Cosmi when he tells Dewberry that UT develops o-linemen.

"It motivates me, no question," said Dewberry of the recent drop. "But that's why I'm here; to work and compete."

Jaiden Robertson... There's no substitute for speed, and that's what the 2022 Spring Dekaney defensive back wakes up saying each morning. He still doesn't hold an offer, but after yesterday's unofficial 4.25 40, his phone was hot last night. Texas, LSU, Texas A&M, and Baylor all reached out, and he's got the Horns on his mind.

Bear Alexander.. The former Terrell and Dallas Skyline interior defender is currently enrolling at Denton Ryan after his father took a job on the staff. Talk about the rich getting richer. At 6-foot-3, 310, Alexander has lost almost 30 pounds during the pandemic. He's eating better, running every morning, and looking for an edge each day. LSU, Georgia, UF, and Alabama are usually on his phone, and you can add Texas to the mix. Coach Giles and coach Herman check on Alexander regularly and make him feel like a priority. Maybe a season with Ja'Tavion Sanders and Billy Bowman can help the Horns.

I caught up with the ESPN camp organizer, Gerry Hamilton to get his take on the day. These events are hard enough to cover when you’re also not ensuring things are running smoothly, but Gerry has access to the scuttle from the position coaches. So he had eyes and ears all over the place. He offered a lot of good nuggets.

Inside Texas: You know the market Gerry, what did you learn today that UT fans would find interesting?

Gerry Hamilton: I’m big on JJ Henry and I talked to his dad for a while. I get the feeling Texas is right there. He mentioned Andre Coleman has done a good job of recruiting his kid. I think Texas, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M are the ones to watch there. I also talked to Coach De La Torre from Denton Ryan, that’s Aaron, not Alex, and he mentioned that Ja’Tavion Sanders’ body has exploded. He’s seen some ridiculous growth. He also mentioned what stood about Sanders is, when they needed him to make a play, he did. The more they ask of him the more they get. Those two, Sanders and Billy Bowman are solid, by the way. Not sure if there’s concern on your board.

IT: Like I said, you know the market. It seems there’s always some concern on the boards no matter how solid a kid is. Sticking with Denton Ryan, what’s the word on defensive back Austin Jordan? I think he’s going to be a safety rather than corner.

GH: Coach De La Torre spoke highly of him too. He didn’t say he’s Jeff Okudah but he said there are some similarities. He said he’s a no-brainer Power 5 kid and can absolutely play at Texas.

IT: UT is high on him for sure. And one more from Ryan. Anthony Hill Jr.

GH: Anthony Hill. Nathan O'Neal, the defensive line coach who has worked with countless defensive linemen including the Bosas, mentioned how natural hill was running the arc, and how natural of a pass rusher he is. Not as natural in space but really good playing downhill. He’ll play the position Joseph Ossai does, who O’Neal has also worked with.

IT: UT really needs to build a Denton Ryan pipeline. Two guys who stole the show were Harold Perkins and Dasan McCullough from Kansas City.

GH: Harold Perkins is a freak. He’s raw and didn’t really know how to line up, or where to place his feet or hands to explode, but he has a ton of potential. Ran a 4.49, his movement skills, ball skills, hand-eye is all off the charts. He’s a guy you want in the Big 12. I bet he ends up top 50 in the class, maybe top 20.

IT: And McCullough?

GH: 6-4, 225, ran a 6.98 L-cone. Absurd for his age. Can cover in space or drop in coverage and rush the passer. He’s going to be a 250 pound outside linebacker.

IT: Hard to believe he’s a 2023 prospect. You posted a clip of Bryce Anderson looking quite fluid.

GH: He’s committed to LSU but he showed up with a Texas backpack he got from his cousin PJ Locke. He reminds me of Quandre Diggs in a way. Obviously entirely different bodies, but they both played wherever they were needed and played well. You look at Anderson’s build and you just know he’s a safety or nickel. He impressed the coaches. I think he impacts winning. He’s intelligent. He can call a defense. Really good feet, he can open up his hips, has physicality to his game. Just a really good player.

IT: I was interested on length numbers for a few guys like Kelvin Banks and Kam Dewberry. Did you get those?

GH: We have those but they’re not downloaded into the system so I don’t have them quite yet. I‘ll let you know. Banks is probably an 80 to 82” wingspan guy. He was very coachable. Underdeveloped upper body which adds to his upside. Good feet, good bend.

IT: Both Justin and I like Cole Hutson.

GH: Broad shoulders, you just know he’s going to be a guard. Long arms, good feet. Schools are going to battle for him, they won’t just let him get away without a fight.

IT: Yeah, I saw a picture of him and it immediately screamed guard. Good size and real upside in pass pro at the position, though. You guys had some good running backs in attendance. Who stood out?

GH: Jadarian Price from Denison ran a 4.54. I didn’t hear the coaches say much about him but he tested well and showed good feet in agility drills. Jamarion Miller is one to know. He had a good testing day, running a 4.56. He caught the ball well in running back drills. He also said his brother Damion was going to join the Marines.

IT: Oh man, good for Damion. Jamarion has looked like an eventual offer to me since his freshman year. Tons of burst. What about Tavorus Jones. The El Paso back made the long trip.

GH: He was clearly not used to the combine setting but he got much more comfortable over the second part of the day. He moves well and looks the part. A 2023 from San Antonio is one to watch, Carson Green from San Antonio Reagan. No relation to Aaron, I checked on that, but he impressed the coaches. I’d say he’s 5-10, 185 with some lower body trunk. Both running back coaches commented on his hands and feet. Another 2023 in attendance who is more well known is Rueben Owens from El Campo.

IT: BLACK UNICORN!

GH: That’s him! The coaches said what impressed them is they would tell him something in drills that hey would take to the field on the very first rep. He was very coachable.

IT: Great to hear. Seems like a nice kid. Seemed like there were some really fast times. What’s your guys’ method for testing?

GH: We’re laser laser, so laser on the start, laser on the finish. We did subtract a tenth since we had them running on real grass which is a slower surface. The difference works out to about a tenth.

IT: Got it. Thanks for your time. We should talk more often.

GH: Anytime!

Having the Damn aggys go to sec opened the door wider for state of Texas recruits to leave...

Even Buttertooth couldn't get 42% in-state in Texas now...

No doubt. But the numbers are what they are. And it's a fact that we're not landing enough elite, difference-maker players. The staff has done an excellent job scouting, evaluating and developing players like Cosmi. But we need to land more difference makers. We get a lot of dudes that COULD be starts. We need more dudes that WILL be stars. We can't depend on having to coach all these dudes up.

Quote

(Also aggy was bad during that stretch where "The Orange Slice Boogaloo" was dominating in-store recruiting in Texas)

My immediate reaction was "that's not necessarily true. They always land a few five stars like Reggie McNeil or Christine Michael or Mike Goodson." But holy shit those dudes were anomalies. They absolutely sucked. - From 01-13 they landed 14 Texas top-ten recruits. That's just a little more than one per year! At least 8 of those 14 were five stars for an average of 14% of five stars over that period of time. Wow.

To win a NC you have to be at least two of these three:

- Willing to cheat at least to level of rivals

- An elite in game coach

- A great salesman.

Herman is none.

Herman has matched wits with 3 defensive minded coaching staffs in the bowl games, and blew out every single one of them. All as a 2 score underdog. He can be elite when he wants to be, the problem is that the game to game consistency is not there through 3 seasons at Texas. I would say he is an elite in game coach, when he's actually calling plays, but he doesn't want to do it. He finally hired a guy that is also an elite OC, the first he's had in 5 seasons. He also has a very good DC.

Texas will sell itself when you win, we will see if Herman's off season lead him to address many things about how he approaches the team and players.

Mack won a MNC while only being a great salesman, and really how good of a salesmen do you have to be if you are cheating your ass off?

That said, the perception of the conference was definitely hurt by defections of Nebraska, CU, MU and A&M. That has definitely done more damage to recruiting than specifically aggy joining the SEC and "opening up the doors to the state". And really, losing Nebraska was the much bigger deal. The conference becoming more regional (notwithstanding West Virginia), has not been a good thing.

Yah well I kinda think THAT'S bullshit!!!!!@#$@#$@#$

It took butterteeth 7 years to win a MNC. So, I don't get the Herman hasn't done his part. Mack might have missed on AP, but he got his fair share, enough to win a MNC with average coaching. Whatever the reason, Texas needs to do better in state and land guys like Little and Brock - they help Herman "do his part".

There’s a definite chicken/egg issue with recruiting/performance.
which means a coach either has to be able to win more than he should with the recruits he lands, or be able to land better recruits than he should based on his winning.
very few (if any) can do both. I’m not sure that herman has shown the ability to do either consistently.

Who was the last overall number 1 recruit that was from Texas?

any other overall number 1 recruits at qb in Texas since VY?

VY was it for the trackable modern era (ie. post-2000)

Kindle was 4 overall. Jeffcoat was 5. Gray and Wright were 6. BJ Johnson was 7.

Look, I can tell you right now that it has nothing to do with Brock being a fucking Luddite that is surprised to find that Texas alums are aware of how this played out and his role in the recruiting process. Nothing. Not one bit. Right? Didn't some 9.95 try to shit on surly and say that?

this is exactly like Boomers caught on camera acting like complete assholes that are surprised to find that the entire world saw them showing their ass at Piggly Wiggly.

IT reporting that Jamier Johnson is eligible for early enrollment now. He's exploring options now that California has postponed their hsfb season to the Spring. “But we’ll just have to see how things play out.”

Kobe Boyce's retirement leaves an open spot on the 85 man limit. Also have room against the 25 man counter.

He's looking at enrolling early, not reclassifying, so no effect on the 85
