Texas Recruiting Notes 2021

The national TV guys don't know as much about one particular school as average guy that reads the recruiting board from his school.

There are probably 50 guys on this board that know more about Texas recruiting than Galloway,  Herbie or any of the ESPN talking heads.

I'd wager there are 2,500 people on here that know more about Texas recruiting than Galloway.

However, it wasn't a big secret that our 2021 class was underwhelming, and it was national news when Ewers decommitted, and I think Palmer maybe even referenced it.  Even accounting for only those 2 data points gives a pretty good indication of how Texas football is being viewed and that things were not trending well.  It was just an uninformed, terrible opinion that just annoys me more than anything.  If we start off next season 5-0 with a win over OU Galloway will likely be the first to say what a great decision bringing in Sark was.  They get paid to talk.  It is what it is.  But at least Palmer didn't sound like a complete idiot with his head in the sand while discussing the situation.

Thanks. Yeah, I’m of the opinion that, in today’s CFB world, if you’re haven’t gotten it done by year 3, you’re not going to get it done. Might be some exceptions, but I’ll stick with that premise. National guys can talk to people around a program and get a feel. Either Galloway didn’t do his homework before that rant or he didn’t want what he knew getting in the way of a good rundown. Another year of Herman and we’re looking at a two class average of probably 50-ish.

Pretty much. Saban got it done in year 3 and hasn't looked back. when you are at a school like Texas, you don't need 4-5 years to get shit headed in the right direction. Just don't hire your G5 buds and shitty OCs and start the recruiting ball rolling.

Hell  South Florida even realized he had to go after 3 years.    Nice guy.  WAY over his head.   Galloway clearly has no feel for it and is just talking off the top of his head.  Still annoying.

That's a pretty important point IMO.  Well done.

Galloway brings out that take almost every time a coach gets fired. Guys get paid to fill air, he needs to have a take and that’s the easiest one to have without having to research deeply into every single school.

It’s not that deep.

Assumed this was Randy Galloway - wondered why anyone listened to him about anything in 2021.

Guess the "ain't shit" mantle passed from Randy to Joey.

Remember not being able to kick an extra point under Strong? Or defer a coin flip? I member.

Strong did not give a shit about special teams.  Did they even coach it?  I remember wincing at every kick or punt return. But I was also wincing every time a wr cut their routes short of the first down marker.  That was a multi-year coaching cluster fuck.

I remember seeing a Reddit post from someone that was supposedly a punter during the Strong years who said Strong would tell the specialists to go kick on their own on the other field during practice.

Strong was an idoit but that is what all coaches do with kickers/punters.  usually at the end of practice they have a special teams session where the punters and kickers come back to run the cover/return stuff.

Strong didn't devote any practice time to special teams. They only would do walk throughs.

LJ Johnson trending back towards A&M per Gerry.

I by no means would mind Johnson in the RB room but, with the apparent focus on needing a dual threat RB in Sark's offense, Blue in 2022 is the bigger prize imo

I'm not the best at the Google, but looks like classes start on the 19th.  So assuming LJ will be deciding probably by the end of next week since I think he was planning on enrolling early.  Doesn't leave much time for Sark to make an impression.  But I'd assume Urban to the NFL should be settled by then, and likely Drayton as well.

If Sark can get him (or keep him depending on who you are listening to) on board in 4 or so days, that'll be a pretty good sign of potential recruiting prowess moving forward I'd think.  I mean, it is college station and all, but their Running game did look pretty dang solid this year.

Spoiler

— I spoke to a source today who indicated that Texas might be in play for a Michigan signee. Four-star Fresno (Calif.) Central East wide receiver Xavier Worthy chose the Wolverines but flirted with the idea of flipping to Alabama before signing day. I'm told there may be an issue with Worthy enrolling early at Michigan, and he could ask for a release from his letter. If that happens, I'm told Texas is a strong candidate. Steve Sarkisian was his primary recruiter at Alabama and a huge reason he gave the Crimson Tide some consideration down the stretch. There are still a lot of what ifs to take place, but this is an intriguing storyline to watch for the Longhorns.

— It's quite possible Steve Sarkisian could have a huge month of January. As we reported last week, four-star running back LJ Johnson already graduated high school and is planning to enroll at the school of his choice in the next few weeks. One factor big in Johnson's recruitment is Stan Drayton and retaining him on staff would be a huge key for Texas. Johnson is still deciding between his favorites, but we are told that Texas continues to hold an edge. There's a belief that if Texas A&M was really the pick, he would have done it by now and not waited for the coaching situation to shake out, but we are told it's really close. Nick will see him tomorrow so we should have more.

— I'm told that 2021 Texas commit Ishmael Ibraheem had a productive conversation with the new Texas staff. Ibraheem was involved in a legal matter just before the early signing period and put his signing off to resolve the issues. Ibraheem's court date is this week, and it's expected that the charges will be dismissed. Ibraheem's status is still up in the air, but we should gain a little more clarity this week. As for Ibraheem's feelings, I was told he was recruiting several younger prospects to Texas this week.

A top 100 receiver in Sark’s transition class? Yes please.

I hope you guys have your pitchforks sharpened. My understanding is that the guy doing the steering towards ATM is @SydneyCarton’s redass aggie relative on the staff there at LJ’s school and I’m not even joking. Solid work, bud.

any idea on why said redass relative waited this long before trying to influence the recruitment (or why it took this long before such influence was effective)?

Also, wondering if it is being communicated to LJ that Urban would take Drayton with him to Jacksonville if Urban accepts that job (regardless of whether that is true).  Outside of some sort of bag theory that should have been delivered way before January, I can't think of any reason why LJ would have waited this long to pick Aggy if we were keeping Drayton and generally getting a much better staff in place.

There's always a SydneyCarton.

This may be my favorite line for 2021 so far.

fun fact everyone, he is in fact joking.

It is honestly pathetic how much entertainment I derived from this.

Can you shed light on who is the culprit though?
