The scuttle before now has been that 'Bama currently leads. Clemson led and told the family the truth about James, and now they seem to be out of it. It doesn't feel like these kids want to come to Texas.

I think they want to come to Texas and their dad wants them to come to Texas. They just feel like Texas is making that a much more difficult decision than it should be.

I'm more of a "shit or get off the pot" guy, but I understand where they're coming from. If they were to commit now, they could join Jalen Milroe in making this a monster class and increasing the possibility of big success on the 40 Acres. There are no sure things in life. As suggested, I doubt even Saban will still be at Bama in 4 or 5 years.

Super K noted in the OP today that TE Landon King has a sister currently attending UT and should be able to land if we push.  He said the staff is probably going to see what happens with Arroyo before pushing for him.

Also, they said that Brandon Campbell is Earl's grandson?  That's the first time I've seen that.

Miami guy says the same

If they announce in June..is that still enough time to recruit for 2021?  BTW are they bell cows?

That's the type of deal that's gunna help change Texas for the better. Whatever you think of Herman or whoever the next wave washes in, a mega class of the best who bet on themselves to make that change would be, as the kids say, dope AF, and hard for any coach to fuck up. Kids who buy into themselves as being the difference makers, and not having to go to an Ohio State or wherever to get put into the NFL early.

It'd be a whole lot quicker and easier, anyway, than waiting for Herman or the next guy to do it themselves, I guess.

still think the answer is going to be Dabo for some hilariously huge number for salary + pool with facility improvements attached to it.

betting the Crimson Tide Foundation or whatever their actual booster fund is has been raising money for years to replace Saban once he decides to leave...

They'll hire Mario Crystal Ball, imo

We are going to have either a good season or a new head coach. Either should help with the brocks?

They're early enrollees. That's not a lot of time for a new coach to work on them, and I think a lot would have to go right for that to work

Also, can someone confirm.  Didn’t they just visit Bama on an unofficial?  Didn’t they skip Texas elite day?  Then their first OV is back to Bama and their last OV is back to Bama (only school they are visiting twice).  That makes 3 visits in just a few months.  If they are making a June decision, seems like the writing is on the wall,

Fridays in the Humidor: 2/21/20

Quote

No real news is good news at this point in the calendar. The team is going through workouts, still getting familiar with the new coaches, and participating in team building activities. Tom Herman makes the the lead up to spring football as competitive as possible. He'll do that during the summer before the season as well. To do that he has the 8 players on the leadership council draft their fellow players. (This alone is a smart move as it lets him know how players are viewed by their teammates)

Competition is as much about accountability and punctuality as it is sports performance. Points are won and lost based on making or missing meals, tutorials, or lifts. Points can also be won by increasing strength or speed. Eventually the scores are tabulated and a winner is determined, but the real point is the life lessons they're learning along the way. You're thinking you're over there caretaking some old guy's house, but really you're learning ka-ra-tay. More standard offseason fare is having a group of Navy SEALs come in and work with the team. This isn't your normal sit and try and and stay awake session, this gets pretty intense and starts early in the morning. The main takeaways are each man doing their job and the importance of communication. I asked some more team questions to satiate the offseason parch.

IT: We've heard good things about Kennedy Lewis from the scout team. Anyone else stand out?

Source: While he was going through his situation, Josh Moore. That's no surprise. Isaiah Hookfin is another one to watch. He's gotten way stronger, he''s dedicated, technique is solid, and he's athletic. You could throw Willie Tyler in there too. He showed up with the ability to move but he's lost a lot of bad weight. He's slimming up. That will help is stamina too.

IT: What about on defense?

Source: Marques Caldwell did good enough on scout to get moved. He won scout team defensive player of the week a couple of times. Jett Bush is another one. He's too big and too fast to be a walk-on. He'll eventually get a scholarship I would bet.

IT: It's easier to find good walk-on linebackers than scholarship ones, apparently.

Source: [laughing] Throw Jake Ehlinger in there. He won player of the week too. Jaquess, Hine, Brockermeyer, Bush, Ehlinger. The walk-ons do a great job. On offense I forgot to mention wide receiver Travis West.

IT: Back to Caldwell. Where do you see him fitting?

Source: Tough to tell at this point. He might stay at corner. They don't need him anywhere else for the time being.

IT: How's David Gbenda doing? He'll be counted on a lot this spring.

Source: They have some guys to work with despite the injuries. Gbenda was the fastest linebacker until they moved Overshown. It might still be close. Gbenda can run and is up to about 230 pounds. It is a big spring for him. With the injuries he'll get a ton of reps.

IT: Can Vaughns hold up on the line of scrimmage? He'll be needed this year behind Ossai.

Source: They need to add weight to him but he’s versatile and can fly to the ball which makes up for some things. Just need to add weight and strength. He’s plenty aggressive.

IT: What's the vibe like in the program with the new coaches?

Source: I think the new energy and new voices is good for the program. Everybody just has their head down working.

STATE OF RECRUITING

The dead period often doesn’t yield many opportunities for momentum, so in the mean time Texas is busy trying to set up visits with prospects for the spring. With all the staff turnover, the recruiting regions will likely take a different turn. Even though certain coaches will have specific areas due to connections and previous familiarity, this cycle might see some staffers attack their particular position irrespective of region. Herman made his hires with teaching as the primary factor and recruiting secondary. He knows they have talent to coach up and if they do so recruiting will be just fine.

If you're a recruit in Ohio, you go to Ohio State. If you're a recruit in Louisiana, you attend LSU if given the opportunity. It might even be law that you do so. Texas is a bit different, especially when UT is down like it has been. Every school from across the country is looking to poach. Relationships within the Texas high school coaching fraternity do matter and the new staff will work hard to build those. Running backs coach Stan Drayton will remain in the Houston area north of I-10, which has technically been his territory. You could say his territory was Tucson last cycle.

Defensive line coach Oscar Giles will continue working the same regions. He'll have the Golden Triangle, West Houston, and Central Texas. This cycle, expect him around Port Arthur for Jordon Thomas and East Texas for Pleasant Grove's Landon Jackson and Marcus Burris. A no-brainer would be Jay Valai in DFW. It’s where he was born and raised. He already has established contacts, plus the personality to assimilate to any area. Also, Ishmael Ibraheem is in South Dallas. The Kimball corner is a priority.

We’ve heard TE coach Jay Boulware’s name mentioned for East Texas. He’s more familiar in DFW (Irving High grad) and Central Texas. One guy that might be a great fit for the Piney Woods region is linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler. Problem is, he doesn’t know anyone there. At least not yet. Hutzler could help in the SEC's footprint too. We think he could become a good recruiter. Wide receivers coach Andre Coleman might be the utility man, because like Valai, he can blend in a lot of places. He wouldn’t be a stranger in Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and parts of Texas. He’s the cool cat of the crew. They already look nationally for receivers. Expect Coleman to rack up the frequent flyer miles.

Offensive line coach Herb Hand hits Houston hard, probably because of his affection for @PinkertonsBBQ. It doesn’t hurt that Tyler Johnson, Isaiah Hookfin, Hayden Conner, and the departed Javonne Shepherd were in the area. Add Bryce Foster, Donovan Jackson, Matthew Wykoff, and Ruben Fatheree, and we could see him stick around. Knowing Hand, he won’t forget DFW when Team Brockermeyer and Savion Byrd are residents. He'll be at All Saints as often as he's allowed. Co-defensive line coach Mark Hagen would seemingly have the Bryan/College Station area because of familiarity and his family still marooned there. We don’t know of many targets in that region, so I’d expect him to be versatile.

Regions for new coordinators Mike Yurcich and Chris Ash have yet to be determined. Yurcich has already hit DFW and North Texas hard. Ash has some national affiliations and has hit Southern California aggressively. Expect Valai to have the in-state defensive backs while Ash looks nationally. Side note: expect a steady stream of the national targets who have been offered in the secondary to visit during the spring. In the end, this cycle might see more of UT’s coaches hitting their specific position but a loose outline appears to be taking some shape. This has been a common subject and will continue to be one in recruiting meetings over the next month.

HOOPS HUMIDOR

A decision looms on the horizon as the Texas Basketball season approaches its stretch run. What do we make of Shaka Smart's future as the Texas men's coach? While that's not some kind of surprising query, that question has seen a fascinating twist thrown at it over the last few days. John Beilein. The recently released Cleveland Cavaliers coach (by way of MIchigan and, before that, West Virginia) is college basketball's most eligible bachelor and many Texas fans want to know just how seriously to take him as a candidate should Shaka's job possibly (probably?) come open.

The answer is a fuzzy, complicated one, but what about coaching searches isn't (even if they are only potential at this point)? Let's first consider some of the roadblocks.

- He's not young. He's 67, to be exact, having just turned so earlier this month. For a program that has aspirations to contend at the highest levels, the prospect of hiring a coach who seems unlikely to still be coaching when we move into the next decade is an interesting one. The reason to hire Beilein right now would be because you believe he is the missing link for this team to win now. Otherwise, his age would seem to suggest that a younger candidate would be a better long-term fit.

- How into it is he? Beilein's run at Michigan was something beyond even what Rick Barnes had rolling here in the 2000s and to walk away from that took a new challenge and the promise of not having to worry about recruiting high schoolers anymore. After an eight month hiatus, will his battery have been recharged enough to take on a job like UT where fan support is inconsistent, tradition is so-so, and football is king? In essence, the question is not only does he want to come to Texas but does he even want to coach in college at all?

- Shaka's still here. Right. Right. For now, But, still, a roadblock at the current time.

How put off you are by any of those four pieces largely depends on you and your perspective, but any single one of them could be a major hang up given the circumstances, so it's important to wrap your brain around what you can. Now, let's consider some of the reasons it makes plenty of sense.

- No buyout. How do you mitigate Shaka's sizeable buyout? By hiring a coach who is literally a free agent with no "current employer" in need of compensation. For a coach of Beilein's pedigree to not only become available but also in a manner which wouldn't require Texas to pony up even more cash before we even start talking about salaries is hard to overstate.

- Luke Yaklich is already here. Beilein handpicked the Texas assistant coach to be his defensive guru at Michigan to rousing success. To have a connection to the program where he can have an "in" with the players, a seasoned eye/voice about the abilities/issues of the players already in Austin and easy access into the workings of the athletic department is pretty damn unique and legitimizes the notion that Beilein would be able to come in ready to rock.

- Texas would probably be the best available job. If you're going to go up for the hottest available name, it helps to be the most attractive suitor. That's likely going to be the case as Texas has a solid core of returning players, a widely respected AD and a shiny new arena on the way. All things that would likely be enticing to Beilein.

- Michigan shares some similarities to Texas, academically. And Beilein was able to navigate that and still put together one of the winningest programs of the decade. It's simply not the same at Texas as it is at a place like LSU or Nebraska or Clemson. Beilein's history at a school where academics are pretty important is a box checked.

- He fits CDC's history of coaching hires. CDC wants veteran coaches who are at the top of their profession and, crucially, have proven so at a P5 school. Beilein fits that pretty perfectly. He's also an offensive minded coach for a program/fanbase who has been craving one for some time. It just seems like Beilein is CDC's type - the dude can coach. Here's the run at UM since 2013: national title game, Elite Eight, no tourney berth, round of 32, Sweet Sixteen, national title game, Sweet Sixteen. That all sounds...pretty great.

Some logistics (or as many as we can give out right now). CDC's public support of Shaka is as essential as it is truthful. CDC is good at his job. Vetting is already happening and CDC will be ready to start in earnest should the opportunity call for it. Has contact already been established/feelers sent out to Beilein? Not going to touch that at the current moment, but there's a reason betting sites are talking about Texas being a possible destination. Now watch this all be much ado about nothing, I suppose, but we'll be keeping about as close an eye on this development as we can over the next month.

LSU can be ignored in this recruitment. LSU mouthbreathers on this board and covering their program will intimate otherwise. They'll be wrong the whole way through.

I get it, they had everything come together last year in a perfect succession of quality coaching and QB play. All of that is gone, but Orgeron is still a moron. Very similar to Auburn with Gus and Newton.

It's been Texas/Bama since the Clemson fallout and without the mom having taken any POV. I'll continue to bet Texas even with a complete fucking idiot running the program. Also, Saban retaining Sarkisian when he allegedly had the offer from CU has a tinge of "you could be the guy here before too long" to it. Saban has absolute shit for a succession plan and his age/health can't simply be ignored forever. He turns 69 in 8 months. He hasn't taken the last 2 years well at all, allegedly.

Health?

Did a quick search and got something on hip surgery. Talking about this or maybe something else?

Is that coming from his camp or from his twitter and 995(I would not rely on twitter or 995)?

It's 995 and Twitter. He's posting his offers, and he posted this:

It is unlikely that we offered. He'll be at blOU 3/1 with McCutchin

Hutzler is very, very white. Might just fit in at a Klan rally in this historically racist recruiting area, doesn't know anyone there yet, but he's white and has a history with historically racist recruiting areas, so he'll make friends right quick. Coleman, much like Valai, is a black-skinned person. He's got versatility, namely his blackness with other blacks. Can blend in well. Wouldn't be a stranger in alot of places, provided there are blacks there for him to blend in with. Real cool cat!
