Why would I care that this guy has a whip, is a Longhorn legacy and wanted to come here? We’re landing Preston Fucking Stone, bro.

Putting aside your Preston Stone fixation for a moment, is it all that surprising that Herman would prefer a top dual threat QB over a top pro style passer?

Let's not freak out yet. At least it's not pressed in stone.

2021 PLEASANT GROVE DUO

After Texas swung through PG twice in the last few weeks to check out the Hawks’ Landon Jackson, Marcus Burris, and the 4A State runner-ups, the pair of elite 2021 defensive lineman took a road trip to Austin and College Station last weekend.

For Jackson, he’s lost count of the amount of times he’s seen UT’s campus. He’s vocally fond of the Longhorns and coaches Derek Warehime and Oscar Giles.

At 6-foot-6, and still a still growing 245 pounds, the defensive end/OLB with double-digit offers is really enjoying the recruiting process. He doesn’t stress about the ever-increasing contact from college coaches and reporters as he readies to enter his junior year.

“On this trip, I had a lot more fun at both places (Austin and College Station)," said Jackson. "It wasn’t a bunch of people there this time, and I got to spend a lot of time with the coaches, one-on-one,” said Jackson.

Texas has made it clear how much of a priority that Jackson is and how'd they use in him on the 40 Acres.

"They really want me and would just love for me to play at UT," Jackson said. "We spoke a lot about how I'd be used. Mostly as a stand up DE/outside LB type. It would be a great fit."

As for his 6-foot-5, 265-pound teammate Burris, it was the third time in 2019 he's been to Austin. He thoroughly enjoyed this visit too, as the staff was similar in showing Burris how he's a fit for Orlando's hit squad. He left without an offer, but was assured one could happen at anytime.

With Alabama, Miami, and Texas A&M having already extended an offer to Burris, it shouldn't take much longer for the UT staff to pull the trigger. This was likely the final interview before the offer.

Both Jackson and Burris talk about playing together at the next level, and while "package" deals rarely come to fruition in college football recruiting, if a school could convince both four stars they're the best place to be, a dual-commitment is possible.

Luckily for the 2021 pair, that decision is a long ways down the road. I'll have more from Burris this evening or in the AM.

2021 QB BEHREN MORTON

As his sister was competing for a state title in track and field, the Eastland three-star QB decided to walk over to Moncrief and catch up with the Texas staff.

“It was just awesome,” said Morton. "We really had a great time. I really like Texas."

At almost 6-foot-2, 175, Morton holds offers from USC, Wisconsin, Texas Tech, and Tulsa, and wants to camp around the state this summer. The Horns message to the West Texas signal-caller was simple; we like you.

“They really like me and want to keep evaluating,” Morton explained. "I am in the top 2-3 QB targets in the class of 2021, which is awesome. The future is looking really bright for the Longhorns.”

With Texas Romancing the Preston Stone, UT's big board for 2021 has a clear leader, but the coaches are always looking for contingencies. It might be a one-QB class in the next cycle so if Stone, strong UT lean, starts looking around (we don't expect that), Morton is on the short list for a call. And in the day and age of the portal, you never know when you might have to take two quarterbacks.

2021 DL MARCUS BURRIS

Along with Landon Jackson, Burris forms as formidable of a set of defensive ends as you'll find in the high school ranks. The big swing lineman didn't receive an offer this past weekend but he's still in line for one and enjoyed his trip to Austin.

What was different about these visits to Texas and A&M compared to the other trips?

“Knowing that I am able to stay in Texas, close to home. Knowing I have a chance to play at one of the top schools, which makes both schools seem better. And both facilities are nicer than the out-of-state schools I have seen.”

What is one thing different about each school (UT/A&M) you love?

At Texas, I’d have to say it’s the environment and culture. Everyone is happy and in a awesome mood, and they love and care for the players. At A&M, it would definitely have to be the coaching staff. I love the way they coach and care for the players too.”

Any visits/camps coming up?

“We (Landon) might visit LSU and Arkansas. We’ll both be back in Austin this summer.”

Burris is a great fit for the Texas defensive line because of his versatility and coach-ability. He only gets more coordinated to his body every time I see him. He likes the idea of playing with Jackson in college, but both realize things would have to line up just right.

IT: 2021 Denton Ryan duo discusses spring ball, recruiting

By: @josephcook

Cook continues making the rounds. He’ll be at Duncanville tonight but before that he gives us the latest on two studs from Denton Ryan.

JA’TAVION SANDERS

In the football-only facility at Denton Ryan there’s a wall of pictures of players who have gone on to the next level from the Raider football program. 2021 ATH Ja’Tavion Sanders will likely join his cousin, former Florida Gator defensive end Jarvis Moss, on that wall someday.

Sanders’ film shows his 6-foot-3.5, 220-pound frame making explosive plays on both sides of the ball. He currently possesses a five-star ranking (per 247), one of six 2021 prospects in a loaded Texas class.

At practice Tuesday, Sanders only participated in WR drills during Ryan’s skill session. His athleticism will lead to success on the offensive side of the ball for the Raiders, and he told Inside Texas he can’t wait to catch fades in the end zone, but his position at the next level is likely similar to the one his cousin had – playing on the edge of the defensive line.

“Our whole defense is some dogs,” Sanders said. “I’m definitely one of the leaders on the team.”

Sanders received a Texas offer in February following his Junior Day visit. Since then, he’s received offers from LSU, Florida State, Florida, Ohio State, and TCU. “It’s like a dream come true,” Sanders said.

As one of the few 2021 offers issued by the Longhorns, Texas is standing out for Sanders. He plans to camp in Austin this summer in addition to other college visits he plans on taking, like Notre Dame.

He communicates regularly with Texas defensive line coach Oscar Giles. Sanders spoke highly of Giles and mentioned the two “just click.”

Sanders is a prospect who noticed the season Texas had. The ability to play for titles was one of the things he noted as important in his recruitment.

“They made it that far,” Sanders said of the Longhorns’ season. “All the good things, the bowl game they won this year, they’re definitely capable of winning a national championship. All their players are dogs. They’re just a good team.”

There’s some Longhorn influence in Denton as former Texas FB Alex De La Torre is on staff at Ryan, and former Longhorn and Kansas City Chiefs d-lineman Derek Lokey’s jersey is enshrined next to Moss’ Denver Broncos jersey in the Raider facility.

To get to that level, or even just to Division I, Sanders knows he needs to be a leader for his team.

“I’ve got to get everybody right,” he said. “Especially the young guys.”

BILLY BOWMAN

After running the third leg on Denton Ryan’s 41.74 4x100m relay in the 5A state finals, 2021 ATH Billy Bowman Jr. is glad to be back on the football field.

“We went all the way to state this year and last year,” Bowman said Tuesday. “This is my first week back in football. Getting back in the weight room and stuff like that, it feels good to be back out here.”

Ryan Raider football is more than just a game for Bowman, it’s a family affair. His father, Billy Sr., serves as WR coach at Ryan. As a result, Billy Jr. is excited to do his part to help Ryan go on another deep playoff run.

“We’re definitely looking forward to getting back to where we were last year in the playoffs and even going further,” Bowman said. “We just want that ring, but my main focus on this team is I’ve got to do my part, make sure everybody has their part, and we’re going to be solid.”

One thing evident in Bowman’s film is the combination of speed and quickness with football instincts. It translates to both sides of the ball, as Bowman not only tallied 553 receiving yards and 8 touchdown catches, but also 32 total tackles and 5 interceptions over 15 games.

He wasn’t a scoring threat on offense only. Bowman brought one fumble, one kickoff, and three interceptions back for touchdowns last season according to MaxPreps.

Bowman has attention from teams all over the country. Washington State sent a coach to see him Tuesday, and promptly offered the 5-foot-10, 175-pound athlete. Like Sanders, Bowman plans to take a visit to Notre Dame this summer.

He hasn’t received an offer from Texas yet, but he’s familiar with the program. He told Inside Texas he visited UT’s facilities on his off-day during UIL state track weekend.

“They just said they’re definitely keeping an eye on me, a real close eye,” Bowman said. “I’m going to be back up there this summer. I definitely love what Texas has to offer.”

Defensive coordinator Todd Orlando interacted with him on his visit, and spoke with Bowman mostly about playing safety at Texas.

What position Bowman plays isn’t as important as simply having the ability to play as early as possible.

“I just want to go to whatever school I can get on the field the fastest,” Bowman said. “I’ll play offense or defense, or return specialist. I just want to have the ball in my hands.”
