I assume the school isn't accredited?

Last month, the board gave the school permission to start granting degrees by authorizing a two-year certificate. The board can renew the certificate every two years for an eight-year period while the school seeks accreditation from a national accrediting body. The school’s founders believe the standard accreditation process needs reform but acknowledge oversight is necessary so degrees are considered legitimate. Accreditation is also required for students to receive federal Pell grants to cover tuition and fees.

Accreditation takes a long time, hence the eight year period the state gave them. It is also why a lot of for-profit schools just bought failing non-profit schools - so they could be covered by their accreditation and not spend the years required to get it on their own.

I bolded the important part above - accreditation is required in order to get Federal money. Otherwise, why do you need accreditation? If you are against the system and trying to revolutionize it, why do you care that the "failed system" doesn't recognizes you?

I wasn't paying complete attention to the story -- did I hear that it's a no-tuition school or did I dream that?  If that's actually true, the Pell grants would seem to be a non-issue.  I wouldn't begin to know how they'd make that work, though.

The CBS article says that tuition is free - for now, implying that it will not be free in the future:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/uatx-launches-touting-ideological-openness-debate-60-minutes-transcript/

My guess is that this is a way to get students to attend while the school works towards its accreditation, which won't happen until after the first class graduates. It seems to model a tech startup where you give out the product for free or reduced cost and then start charging more once it catches on.

I will be curious to see if it works or if it ends up being an expensive private school that has the same same type, but differently voiced, echo chambers they accuse traditional universities of having.

i mean with the plans for UT is there a legitimate need for a 'differently voiced' alternative? UT is becoming that voice.

i guess having no cost (for now) is a winner.

also this seems very similar to the Sanderfer/Acton university mba program. i think they actually lost their accreditation and ended up outside the US. they should hook up with these guys now lol 🙄

Yep, with UT dismantling the College of Liberal Arts as we know it, there won’t be.

I have little doubt that accreditation will soon be a thing of the past.

Which is not a bad thing, because accrediting agencies have basically ceased denying accreditation because it puts a dent in their revenue.

We take seriously the obligation to deliver this education at an affordable cost. Our graduates are prepared to thrive both professionally and personally, not saddled with heavy debt burdens.

Scrolls down and sees an annual total cost of $58,750.

How does not allowing more accredited institutions keep revenues up? Wouldn’t having more raise more revenue?

I wasn't aware that "UATX" was still a thing. I'm curious if these UATX hours are transferable.

Reciprocal and transferrable with Liberty U, Bob Jones U, Hillsdale College and Texas A&M.

I thought the 60 Minutes piece was very softball and superficial. Didn’t dig into the free tuition claim, and basically named board members with very short bios. More of a human interest piece than journalism. Should have aired on Mo Rocca’s  segment on CBS Sunday Morning.

Posted without much comment, other than interesting to cross reference with the "my kids can't get into UT thread".  With a high achieving sophomore in high school and a couple other behind, this resonates to a certain extent.

A perfect message to persuade gullible, low brow parents.

That's a pretty low brow reaction.

Do you have any kids applying for college in the next couple years and see the apps they are trying to build for schools like UT?

This shit is crazy.

Maybe you do maybe you don't. But your response doesn't particularly suggest to me that you see the current college application system with any contrast to what most of us went through in our own experiences (certainly assumptions baked in here).

I don't think that reduction to standardized testing is the answer.

But the system is very broken man.

I guess there are a couple things to unpack here

1. Of course “UATX” would accept an applicant with those qualifications. I’m also willing to take a principled stand of accepting dates with  all women who look like Alexandra Daddario.

2. It sucks that not all kids can get into all schools. Life is tough and, at times, unfair (or, at least, tough to swallow). It will continue to be so.

A standardized test score like that probably gets you a better than average chance at admission to UC Berkeley. Why the fuck would anyone turn that down to get an unaccredited participation trophy from a cabal of incels?

So I guess we know the answer to the question I posed.

Do you find anything to disagree with in the first four paragraphs of that screen cap?

I have no problem with "sometimes life is hard". To be frank, I am not worried about my "little angles". They will be quite fine and achieve on their own merits and class ranking

I am extremely pro-STEM oriented. What is being undermined by the current academic system is traditional liberal arts education.

Some of yall are apparently too stupid to even recognize it.

Plenty of us see multiple huge problems with the current university admissions and education process.
Not a one of us is stupid enough to think that “the University of Austin” is the answer, though.
We might all agree that there are a lot of problems with assembly line fast food, we’re just not dumb enough to think that a handcrafted shit sandwich is the solution.

Dude. It’s a unaccredited right wing grift. It defines itself as “anti-woke,” it’s yet another outfit that all Elon-like claims that it’s all about “FREE SPEECH” but is a pet project of Harlan Crowe and Bill Ackman and Bari Weiss.
Dude. Just put on your MAGA hat and be done with it. At least you’ve given up on the “both sides” thing, so good for you, I guess.

Just empty rhetoric brisket. Nothing substantive. You are not fooling anyone, except those that want to be fooled.

But you got your key words in. So kudos I guess.

Going to a school that is trying to piggyback off of the UT-Austin name, and that is funded by a Peter Thiel VC tech bro (who also co-founded Palantir), is not the way to fix it.

Go to fucking Texas State, or Texas Tech, or Houston or Aggy or UNT or UTEP because I'm pretty fucking sure that kids who are even half-assed trying can get into those schools.

And most of us have worked alongside grads from those other schools without issue for the most part. Once you get a degree and get an actual job and build up an actual resume, what school you went to starts to matter less and less and it's more about what you've done and who you currently know.

And not everybody is meant to go through the higher education pipeline.

That's a pretty basic take.

If you are seeking STEM you certainly need to go through one of the name schools. Just basic credentialing dictates.

If we are talking liberal arts, I think thats a totally different ball game.

I don't think we are too far off here.

But if you want a traditional liberal arts education, I am not 100% sure that a place like UT Austin would be my first choice.

Lawyering is one of the most dishonest professions. And that is surprising to no one.

Given your love for dishonesty one would think you’d have more respect for lawyers.

Also why do you think I went to K-State?

You are particularly the most dishonest poster on this site.

Figured it was a mascot/year of graduation handle.

You land some, you miss others.

But the fundamental assessment remains.

“Objective truths.” Please continue as to how the university of Harlan Crowe will be the champion of that value.

I gotta say, seeing someone who supports Palestinians so consistently stan for Bari Weiss, who has spent her entire adult life trying to oppress Palestinians, just to disagree with me is fucking depressing. They deserve better.
