November 2nd is the anniversary of the coronation of Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974. His dynasty -- in Amharic "ንጉሠ ነገሥት" or "King of Kings" -- traced its roots to King Solomon and Queen Makeda (aka "Queen of Sheba").

The history of Haile Selassie in exile is worth studying for those interested in the history of weapons of mass destruction -- Benito Mussolini's imperial ambitions included an invasion of Ethiopia in 1934-35 which should have been no problem for a modern army, but it proved so costly to the fascists that they had to resort to chemical weapons.

Selassie's importance does not stop there, however. After World War II Selassie's story was not merely one of geopolitical importance -- he is viewed by members of the Rastafarian religion as the parousia, or "Second Coming". In fact, the very word "Rastafari" is a malapropism. "Ras" is a title of distinction, like "Sir" or "The Honorable" and "Tafari" was Haile Selassie's given name, "Tafari Makonnen". Jah, mon.

Godzilla is released nationally in Japan on this date in 1954. Not premiered nationally. Godzilla premiered October 27, 1954 in Nagoya.

The name of the movie isn't even Godzilla.

See how the movie poster reads

in big red letters?  Gojira.  A combination of  リラ (gorilla) and ジラ (whale). Gorilla whale. From an early concept before the monster we know and love today was settled on.

U.S. reintroduces the income tax. Not  " "introduces" ". As I mentioned, the first income tax was during the Civil War. Whoever you copied that from fucked up.

Production of Chevrolets began in 1913. The company was founded in 1912.

Chevrolet was not intended to compete with Ford as it was more than twice as expensive. Series C Classic Six was $2150 vs the Model T at $850 in 1908 to less than $300 by 1925.

November 4 is widely commemorated as the Yitzhak Rabin Memorial.

On November 4, 1995, Rabin was assassinated by Yigal Amir, an Orthodox Jew who was opposed to the Oslo Accords, the document outlining an agreement for Palestinian authority and self-determination, of which Rabin had played the leading role in making Israel a cosigner in September, 1993.

For his successful negotiations with Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yassir Arafat, Rabin, along with Shimon Peres and Arafat, were awarded the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize. The square where he was assassinated, Kikar Malkhei Yisrael (Kings of Israel Square), was renamed Rabin Square in his honor.

Sadly, his legacy of peace has been tarnished over the past twenty years by the return of the conquest paradigm -- there can be no peace when there are troops in the streets. Or, as Rabin put it in his Nobel Peace Prize lecture, "Military cemeteries in every corner of the world are silent testimony to the failure of national leaders to sanctify human life."

November 5 is Guy Fawkes Night, sometimes referred to as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night, or Firework Night. Observed primarily in Great Britain (though also in New Zealand and in some parts of coastal Canada), this holiday is testament to the human capacity to make a party on the flimsiest (and sometimes most dubious) of excuses.

Guy Fawkes was a member of the "Gunpowder Plot" -- the failed assassination attempt on King James I of England and VI of Scotland by a group of provincial English Catholics. The plan was to blow up the House of Lords with James present, but Sherlock Holmes arrived in the nick of time and... oh, wait, different story.

Anyway, it was an ill-conceived plot, Fawkes was arrested with a bunch of explosives on him (completely undetonated, of course). In the aftermath of the event, numerous protests turned into bonfires, with effigies of famous Catholic figures being burned, and became an annual event, ultimately evolving to include fireworks.

In America, colonial residents observed the holiday and referred to it as "Pope Day", but those traditions died out around the time of the American Revolution, presumably because of the English nature of the holiday, but also one would hope in deference to the large Catholic populations of Maryland and Pennsylvania whose support was essential to the cause.

Nowadays, the religious bigotry of Guy Fawkes Night is a thing of the past, and it's just an excuse to drink cider, shoot off fireworks, and generally carouse.

Well ... there's the part about murdering hundreds of innocent people and Guy Fawkes being sentenced to hanged, drawn, and quartered. In a last minute attempt to escape, he jumped from the steps to the gallows and broke his neck.

That didn't stop them from chopping off his head and parading it around on the end of a pike and displaying in on London Bridge. Party on!

1928. Organized crime leader and gambler Arnold Rothstein dies in Manhattan hospital two days after being shot. Unclear if motivated by Rothstein not paying poker debt incurred during a marathon game in October (roughly $4.7M in 2018 dollars) or as retaliation by Dutch Schultz for the killing of Joey Noel by Rothstein associate Jack "Legs" Diamond. Even though he was dying, he refused to cooperate with the shooting investigation.

Rothstein testified before a Chicago grand jury but not indicted for the Black Sox Scandal.

12zRuPhB_o.jpg

My interest in Rothstein began with F Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Jay Gatsby takes Nick Carraway to lunch and introduces Meyer Wolfsheim as the gambler who fixed the 1919 World Series. A clear allusion to Rothstein. What are Gatsby's ties to Wolfsheim? Is Gatsby's fortune based on bootlegging liquor?

November 6 is Finnish Swedish Heritage Day (Swedish "Svenska dagen", Finnish "Ruotsalaisuuden päivä"), celebrating the Swedish speaking population of Finland, their culture, and the bilinguality of Finland.

Throughout Finland, communities of Swedish-speaking citizens hold small celebrations and sing "Modersmålets sång" -- a sort of unofficial national anthem of Sweden.

The reason for November 6th being chosen to mark this occasion is that it is also Gustavus Adolphus Day in Sweden, the anniversary of the death of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden at the Battle of Lützen in 1632.

As with most multicultural nations, there have been periods of political strife surrounding bilingualism (in Finland, the language strife was at its peak in the 1930s), but for the most part, Swedish culture in Finland is a welcome part of the community at large.

November 7 — 10. Great Lakes Storm of 1913. An extratropical cyclone (blizzard with hurricane-force winds and thirty-five foot waves) called a "November gale".

More than 250 killed, nineteen boats destroyed, nineteen boats stranded. Not all of the boats were freighters. On the lakes, a ship which sails on the freshwater seas called a boat. Ocean-going ships can enter the lakes via the St Lawrence Seaway. Boats are larger than ships and cannot fit through the locks to get to the ocean.

A lesser but same type of storm sank the SS Edmund Fitzgerald on November 10, 1975 ....

November 7, 1837, a pro-slavery mob from Missouri murdered Presbyterian minister, journalist, and newspaper editor Elijah Parish Lovejoy in Alton, Illinois (just across the border from Missouri).

A graduate of Waterville College in his home state of Maine, and having been ordained after attending Princeton Theological Seminary, Lovejoy began his ministry in St. Louis, preaching (and writing editorials in numerous publications) of the radical notion that those of African descent were actually human beings, and holding them in bondage was an affront to any rational conception of God.

In May, 1836, having had his personal printing warehouse vandalized and destroyed for the third time, he set up his fourth printing press in Illinois in early 1837 and began publication of the Alton Observer. On November 7, 1837, he and several of his supporters were surrounded in the building by the criminal mob from Missouri; Lovejoy was shot dead, and became a martyr for abolitionists across the country.

His death encouraged his brother Owen Lovejoy to enter politics, and he became the leader of the Illinois abolitionists, a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, and along with his fellow Illinoisan Abraham Lincoln, became a founder of the Republican Party.

November 8, 1940, marked the end of the Battle of Elaia-Kalamas (Greek "Μάχη Ελαίας-Καλαμά"), during the initial stage of the Greco-Italian War. Those of you who follow my daily slice of history will remember "Ohi Day" from a little over a week ago; in response to Greece's refusal to allow Axis forces to occupy "certain strategic locations" in Greece, Italy felt compelled to invade, on the premise that "we really want to."

The main Italian attack focused on Epirus, with a flanking move through the Pindus mountains; the Greeks were badly outnumbered, but held strong defensive positions. After a week of fighting beginning November 2nd, thanks to brilliant strategic planning on the part of a quick-thinking and independent minded mid-level Greek officer corps, the Italians were forced to retreat, and the Greeks counterattacked, actually occupying territory deep in Albania, until in April of 1941, the Germans finally decided to take matters into their own hands, "assisting" a new Italian offensive which in less than a month resulted in Axis forces occupying all of Greece.

Though the Greeks could not ultimately provide enough manpower to maintain their tenuous hold on their own territory, their initial repulse of the Italians is nevertheless recognized as the first victory by Allied forces in WW II, and Germany's ultimate triumph in April of 1941 can rightly be viewed as a Pyrrhic victory... sort of the 20th century Thermopylae, if you will.

I've always admired and respected the Polish people.  They've dealt with some serious shit over the years but they've always fought with pride and determination and, but all accounts, are a wonderful people.  My German family loves to go there.

I remember the Solidarity movement in the 80's and still see it as the beginning of the end of the Eastern Block.

That's a great message and makes me proud to be an American.  That's not always the case these days, so it's a good reminder of what we have been, are still at times, and should strive to be in the future.

1989- The fall of the Berlin Wall. As an ever present monolith during my childhood, it still makes me tear up remembering that day. It was the literal opposite of 9/11 in my memory.

1888- Mary Kelly, Jack the Rippers final victim is murdered

1965- The great Northeast Blackout of 1965.

1494- The hated Family de Medici is expelled from Florence

1998- capital punishment is completely abolished in the UK

1979- Nuclear False Alarm, after NORAD computers mistakenly informed the high command that the Soviets had launched a massive nuclear attack. After waiting for confirmation from raw satellite data and the USs early warning network the alert was cancelled, however, their decision would have lead to a devastating defeat if the attack in fact had been real.

1967- Rolling Stone is first published

1918- Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates after the German revolution and Germany is declared a Republic. This result blamed on/caused by socialists and Jews is later called “the Great stab in the back” by Hitler.

1872- The great Boston Fire of 1872

1620- Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower sight Cape Cod for the first time.

November 9 is Schicksalstag ("Fateful Day") in German history.

There are five notable events in German history tied to this day:

1) The execution of Robert Blum in 1848. Blum was a leader in the Vienna revolts, seeking the creation of a democratic government in place of the Habsburg monarchy;
2) The end of the monarchies in November 1918, when chancellor Max von Baden forced Kaiser Wilhelm II to abdicate;
3) The Hitler putsch attempt in 1923, known as "The Beer Hall Putsch" when (without sufficient support) Hitler had declared himself the "Leader of Bavaria";
4) The pogroms in 1938, also known as "Kristallnacht" or "Novemberpogrom" when synagogues, homes, businesses, and anything else owned by or associated with Jewish Germans were destroyed, and more than 400 Jews were murdered in a precursor to the Holocaust; and
5) The fall of the Berlin wall on this date in 1989, when the reunification of Germany marked the fall of communism in eastern Europe.

Shortly after World War II, the term "Schicksalstag" was used from time to time in writing about German history, but when the Berlin Wall fell, the concept coalesced in popular usage, as it was no longer purely a day of shame, but was mingled with other forms of significant cultural and political change.

November 9th was originally considered as the date for German Unity Day, but as it is also the anniversary of Kristallnacht, this date was considered as inappropriate for a national holiday.

Given, however, that it is a date on which to commemorate not only tragedy and crime, but also heroic acts and significant positive change, it is appropriate to mark the occasion as solemn and important.

November 9, 1881—137 years ago today—fire destroyed the Texas State Capitol in Austin. Construction of the current Capitol was completed seven years later in 1888 at a cost of about $3.7 million.

Of course all of that cost was borne by the Chicago Syndicate investors who received 3,000,000 acres of Texas Panhandle land from the Legislature. Said land was organized into the famed XIT cattle ranch which operated into the early 20th Century before being sold off piecemeal by the bankrupted syndicate.
