What to hell does a symphony conductor do? I know he stands up front and waves a stick around, and makes SRV faces, supposedly to keep everybody in time. I'm thinking that if you're good enough on your instrument to qualify for a symphony orchestra aren't you good enough to stay in time? Seems like dead wood to me.

He mainly keeps time and make sure the orchestra stays together with his guidance. They don't need him to tell them how to play the music but to make sure they don't start playing at different tempos, causing it to sound off. Within each piece, there are tempo changes and he guides these for the different groups, even how fast or slower they need to go. Also, to play louder or more quiet.

I used to wonder the same thing and had it explained to me.

the conductor does 95% of his work during rehearsals.   And individual musicians cannot hear anything more than the asshole next to him.  The conductor holds it all together.   In a small combo, the "rhythm section" (bass and drummer) are the conductors.

The actual performance, the conductor is nearly irrelevant. But sports analogy, he's the coach, and movie analogy he's the director. The entire interpretation of the piece is his vision.

As an example, check out real musicians trying to follow Bradley Cooper's direction from "Maestro:"

It is the fallout from the Toledo War with Ohio. Way back when Michigan was about to be admitted to the union, the border between Ohio and Michigan was not well defined, and there was a dispute between the states. Since you couldn't be admitting states with undefined borders, eventually the decision was to give the small strip of land near Toledo to Ohio, and as compensation, Michigan was given the UP. At the time, everyone thought the UP was worthless and so Michigan got the bad end of that deal, but then they realized that it was full of iron and copper.

Thank you

This is how you do this thread.  Also, History Channel or somesuch had a series a few years back about the shapes of the states and explained all of this.  Really interesting stuff.

Was there some recent change in law requiring some variation of “new driver” stickers on cars? “Student Driver” has always been a thing for driver’s ed, but I don’t recall seeing the “new driver” ones until pretty recently, and they’re all of a sudden freakin everywhere.

In Norway they have to put a big magnetic “L” in their car. Made it very easy for me to tease my friends’ kids when they were learning.

Is the ‘Frank Stallone’ reply/injection the Surly equivalent of the internet ‘Albert Einstein’ reply/injection?  Just asking.
Frank Stallone was great in Barfly.

It's a Norm McDonald bit from SNL.

Why don’t synthetic things (plastic cups, Tupperware) dry well in the dishwasher?

Dishwashers used to dry with a heating element at the bottom to dry, but that used a ton of power.  Now they use condensation drying which sucks for plastics.  That's why on older dishwashers you couldn't put anything plastic on the bottom rack or it would melt.

What the fuck happens to all the water in the upper part of the greenbelt? There are millions of gallons of water in Lost Creek but just a few miles downstream Sculpture Falls is dry as a bone (or at least it was a few days ago before the rains).

Also, where does the water come from? It has not rained significantly prior to this week, but the water was flowing pretty good at Lost Creek. Is it spring-fed and eventually the water table gets so low that no more water flows?

Farmer types… How long can corn stand in the field? Most fields here were cut a long time ago, but like everywhere along the coast we’ve had a shit ton of rain and there’s a bunch of fields with stuff still standing. I figured it may just be too wet to get in to cut it but it looks like it’s about to rot. Is it just a different variety or are those fields lost?

Slaughter Creek does the same on occasion. I think the water may be hitting a karst(s), and draining down into the aquifer. I’m not a geologist.

Don’t need to be a geologist to know when south austin’s mom goes swimming, there’s a problem.

Are we saying south austin's mom is possibly a karst? Asking because not a geologist...

Is there some internet challenge of sneaking the word demure into everything now?

My teen daughter (no pics) dropped demure on me today.  I asked if that was a new thing, and she said yes.  Videos on the socials where some dude is dressed like a girl and talking about how classy and sophisticated 'she' is.  Drops demure in every one.

So now you know!

Hey, what happened to Lobo? Did he go out in a blaze of glory, or just disappear? I searched but can’t find anything, thus on topic.

Whatever it was it undoubtedly involved important people you will never know…
