Dave Matthews Band

Never bought any of his stuff, and I know there are more than a few haters. But I had his version of Gravedigger in my head so just learned it and enjoy it more than expected. I might investigate more, so, what would be the best collection of DMB music?

That’s the hardest question to answer.

I’d start with live at Central Park, live at red rocks, then the gazillion live traxx albums. Just use a Spotify sub.

There’s Dave before he learned how to sing (early 90s), tracks with (sax)LeRoi, tracks with Jeff after LeRoi died, tracks with Boyd (fiddle), tracks after Boyd, tracks with various keyboardists before Buddy Strong, tracks after Buddy joined full time.

And many of the best songs have never been studio released. Example - Break Free, which is one of my favorite songs of all time, got “released” in studio format today. I’m pretty sure a studio version of “Granny” has never been released either.

Every version of every song sounds different, and that’s the hook.

The easiest thing is to turn to SiriusXM channel 30 DMB radio.

Thank you, Bear, for what may have been obvious, just not for me.  I have 12000 songs from my old CD days.  I listen to Spotify lists that my daughter makes for me.  But I haven’t been a big user otherwise.  This is a perfect strategy.

That Gravedigger version was from live show I’d seen a video, just him and Boyd, just single note draw over each chord DM played.

Gravedigger is one of my favorites, and though I’m not chasing any particular songs this weekend I’d love to hear it. Ok I guess I’m also chasing Rooftop and Grace is Gone.

Since I read your post earlier I’ve been humming to myself “Gravedigger, when you dig my grave, could you make it shallow so that I can feel the rain”

We just had dinner at Whiskey Cake with my son’s in laws and I explained how I met his mother at my first DMB show, July 31 1995. Time is a flat circle and how they ended up with this particular son in law.

Son’s FIL is a minister, so I left out the part about how when I met her we shared a J.

when i was trying to get laid in college, "before these crowded streets" was a trusty companion.  it just also happens to be a masterclass drumming album.

but if i had to take one album from their catalog to be part of an all time island selection, it would have to be live at red rocks.  i listened to ever loving shit out of that album from 96-98.

man, i haven't been to a dmb show since probably 2002 or 2003 but thinking about red rocks had me looking through live shows on youtube...it looks like he has really embraced having some stud musicians come in and do features.  gary clark jr. on watchtower and and derek trucks on lie in our graves below are both real nice.

I was at Dallas show and thought it was good. Fiance' and I are going to the Orange Beach show in July too. I just got introduced to Dave about 2 years ago and didn't know much outside of what I had heard on mainstream radio, but man they are fun to watch. Fiance' as seen been to 30+ shows and said he pulled out a few rare ones Saturday.

I saw SMB at the State Fair Bandshell back in ‘95 and someone may have slipped some grass into the homemade cigarette that I may have snuck into the show.
And that may have been a really fun time.

It was July 31st. I met my first wife/former mother of my kids at that show.

I too was stoned to the bone.

I don't listen much these days, but was a huge fan from about '02-'07ish.

This was the set list from my first show.  Neil was not actually on the bill and his appearance was a complete surprise.  I've seen Hilton Coliseum lose it's collective mind many times, but this was right near the top.

I've noticed the same thing over the years, having seen them at lots of venues I suspect it's a woodlands thing. For me it was better last night but I was also 20 feet from the mixing board/sound techs. And I cranked my hearing aids up because Im damned near deaf. The horns sounded great.

I'd have given anything see them at Red Rocks though.

Also that waif in the grey skirt on the right was like a human firedancer for the whole show.

I was left of there and towards the back of the seats. It was the first time I haven’t sat in the lawn in probably 20 shows at the Pavilion. I’ll probably get seats from now as it was a better experience, but previous shows sounded better on the lawn.

I used to go to a lot of DMB shows before Leroi’s passing. Went to a few after that, but I had kids and took a break in traveling to see a lot of bands while they were younger. I haven’t been to any shows or seen any substantial live performance footage of them since Boyd left. I was just looking up to see what they’ve been up to and was surprised to see that it doesn’t appear that they hired a replacement violinist for either recording or touring. Is that correct? If so, does that leave the live shows these days feeing a little empty without that part of the bands sound and the energy he brought onstage? I know this must be ancient news to people who have been going to their shows since then, it just seems wild to not replace that part of their identity.

In 2021, I started following DMB. Boyd's absence from the group has left a hole. Even if the horns have filled the void, you still feel something is missing. The 2024 performances have been excellent. I saw them in Dallas and Colorado this year. 2024 concerts have seemed like conventional 90s and early 2000s set. As a newcomer (I started listening in middle school), you'd expect them to hire someone. In my perspective, Dave respects Boyd and does not wish to occupy that spot. I mean, he was important in shows and stole songs away from the band. But it was still a wonderful show. My father and I try to see DMB every year he is in town.

Buddy Strong on keyboards has filled a lot of Boyd’s space. I can’t wait for the Rock and Roll hall of fame induction in October.

I too miss Boyd, but allegedly he was grooming a guy sexually and got sued. It hasn’t really been revealed what terrible things he did that caused the band to move on without him. Dave has publicly stated that he loves Boyd and hope “he gets the help he needs” whatever that is.

But like Jeff after LeRoi, and Buddy after Boyd, the band goes on.

I listened to the Gorge replay on SiriusXM and Friday night’s set was epic - Two Step followed by Seek Up, that weekend remains a bucket list for me but a huge time and money investment.
