The U.S. Department of Education opened a civil rights investigation into allegations of discrimination in Southlake schools, district and federal officials confirmed.

The department’s Office for Civil Rights last week informed the Carroll school district -- which has been at the center of an ongoing firestorm on how to handle diversity and inclusion -- that it opened three investigations.

NBC News first reported the news of a federal probe.

An education department spokeswoman confirmed that the investigation is looking into “allegations related to discrimination based on race, color, national origin, or sex.”

Karen Fitzgerald, a spokeswoman for Carroll ISD, wrote in a statement that the district is “fully cooperating with this process and diligently pulling all documents requested.“

She declined to share more information on the specifics of the requests, citing student privacy law.

“Our focus will always be what is best for our students as we prepare them for their next steps in their educational journey,” she wrote.

The affluent, mostly white district -- the subject of a six-part NBC podcast -- has become a symbol for what backlash against “critical race theory” looks like.

The district recently attracted national attention after an administrator advised educators to teach students about the Holocaust from “opposing” perspectives, according to an audio recording obtained by NBC News.

Trustees also voted to reprimand a teacher who gave one of her students a book about anti-racism entitled This Book is Anti-Racist: 20 Lessons on How to Wake Up, Take Action, and Do the Work by Tiffany Jewell. The book is a New York Times best seller.

Last week in a video message to parents and students, Superintendent Lane Ledbetter vowed to shift his focus from uniting the city to uniting the school district. Ledbetter has been in his role less than a year.

“My job is to take care of our staff and to ensure that we’re providing a world-class education in a safe environment for our kids and our staff,” Ledbetter said in the video. “And I apologize that I’ve been distracted.”

Ledebtter’s first year as superintendent has been embroiled in controversy over the district’s proposed diversity and inclusion plan, called the Cultural Competence Action Plan. The plan -- intended to make the district more inclusive for students of color -- was drafted by a council of more than 60 parents, students and staff after videos of Carroll students chanting the n-word went viral in 2018 and 2019.

The DMN Education Lab deepens the coverage and conversation about urgent education issues critical to the future of North Texas.

Williams Family Foundation. The Dallas Morning News retains full editorial control of the Education Lab’s journalism.

I hope he's getting paid well, because holy shit that's a helluva shitstorm to deal with his first year.

Edit: I'm aware it happened before he signed on, but he's having to play the part of cleaner.

I don't live in DFW, have never lived in DFW, and will (likely) never live in DFW.  Is this overblown or sound about right for that community?  In other words, is this driven by a handful of racist idiots or should that area be avoided like the plague?

Those of us who live within Dallas proper would prefer that we not be lumped in with the surrounding suburbs.

Something something your mom lumped in.

Also does that mean we can include Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Leander in Austin?

There have been accusations for a few years, but does not seem like it has been a major story (but I do not watch the local news religiously).

The district is about 60% White. Lots is Asians have recently moved there. Lots of out of state transplants too. Place is more like new money snobbery and more than subtle, casual racism.

Yeah, I think the "nouveauness" leaves a lot of the -ism on top or near the surface.

Whereas, in some of the older whitey burbs, like the Park Cities, noblesse oblige sublimates a lot of the -ism.

Have a friend with kids there.  A couple of years ago he told me if there was a way to short sell SLC athletic programs he would do it and not think twice about it.  The demographics are changing and Karen isn’t happy about it.

Pretty much everything but football and baseball are going or have already gone to shit.  Those two they still do more than enough crooting to hold the line but my son's grade level (9th) routinely beats the shit out of them in just about everything the last few years in MS and now HS so yea it's changing.  3-4 years behind his age level, yea it's really over.

Baseball will always be good because that is where most of the Rangers live and they tend to produce kids who are good at baseball.  The Cowboys moving their practice facility to Frisco probably hurts football long term, because Southlake was a pretty nice place to live somewhat adjacent to Valley Ranch.

Eh the Rangers kind of spread out. Some here in Keller, others in Southlake, Colleyville etc. Josh Hamilton still owns this big spread in Keller about .5 mile from my house.

Football for sure. Used to always run into Demarcus Ware in Central Market. Hella nice guy. Physical freak. He had the tiniest waist (seriously looked like a runway model waist) and it just V’d up into massive upper body. Would see Roy Williams (the good one) driving a sweet burnt orange McClaren around over there etc etc. That has all dried up now.

Tommie Harris actually lives in Keller. Wont let his kid play tackle until 9th grade.

One thing besides straight up recruiting SLC does is they have a grandparent rule. Something about if your grandparents live in the district you can go there. Know a few football players who have left Keller to take advantage of that.

Oh and I sure aint throwing stones as my district just had some board meeting with a big group there hysterical about some comic book somebody found in the districts library database (not even the actual book itself) that they believe to be pornographic. BUT those Southlake people are a whole nother level of noveau rich snottiness, one upsmanship and yea…a little racist.

Southlake is worst name for a suburb north of Dallas and Fort Worth. Was it shortened from "kind of south of Grapevine Lake"?

And why is Lake Dallas a town next to Lake Lewsiville, and not in Dallas?

I never liked that area of the Metroplex. The Von Erich wrestling clan from those parts looked tough.

Lake Dallas was a precursor to Lewisville Lake. It was originally impounded to provide water to the city of Dallas.

And now you know….

Southlake is directly south of Lake Grapevine.
