I don't necessarily disagree, especially at public schools, but I do think there needs to be pretty carefully crafted limits.  Not every major/minor needs to be a profit center.

Universities are not trade schools. A review of courses and minors offered is not a bad thing per se. Having the review done by the board alone while ignoring faculty (scholarly) input while focusing on hot political topics is pretty much a bad thing per se.

But there's this:

And then there is this:

The "Black journalist" was an esteemed journalist and educator who was also an Aggie graduate. I wonder which adjective won out.

I agree, but on the other side there are a lot of degrees that are arguably a swindle of young peoples future money. Some degrees just shouldn't exist as they have zero post grad value in reality.

The problem there is the obscenely high cost of public university education. It's criminal robbery of college students no matter what they study.

I'm not disagreeing either, but a university is a collection of groups sharing finite resources and when one department has 50+ students in a graduate course and another department has multiple grad courses with 4 students, that's a big problem.

If those numbers sound kind of specific, it's because our idiot provost at TxSt at the time wouldn't do anything about that situation which is why it grinds my gears.

Oh full on pure monetization of High Ed is a core issue for sure. Hence why I think some measures should be in place to make sure 18 year olds aren't being swindled.

While I agree with you that some faculty engagement is wanted, I think it important to note some of those faculty are straight up in on the grift. Tenured Proffesor JibbaJabba Jones of Far Eastern QFLBGT+/- Music Theory of Engineering dance and psychology is gonna support and defend Tenured Professors BadaBing Smith's Study of Crossfit Economic Theory, every time.

The aggy Battalion student newspaper has a full list of the programs.

https://thebatt.com/center/board-of-regents-to-vote-on-mandating-minor-certificate-eliminations/

It's worth a read, because it goes into what made the process controversial and "unprecedented," being that faculty were not included in the process, which is apparently the norm in these situations.

Adding toppings to fries makes them worse, not better. Toppings should be added on the side, to prevent compromising the structural integrity/crispiness of the fry.

It’s all about perspective. I look at this not as an improvement on fries, but as an improvement on the loaded baked potato.

Counter point/question:  do LGBTQ+ studies profs make the same salaries as business/STEM profs (for example)?  I realize that prof salary isn't the only cost, but it's surely part of the math.

This is a ridiculous statement.  Even if your goal for higher education is 100% financial, there are plenty of studies showing that a college degree is an extremely positive NPV investment, even without controlling for major.

Of course not, but everyone teaching a business class doesn't make the same salaries.  When I taught at UT, I was paid about $20K per class.   Sheridan Titman was getting paid over $300K/year.  And I taught much bigger classes than he did.

As for cheese fries, the best in my book are Snuffers. I got introduced to them when I dated a SMU girl in college. The cheese fries at the OG snuffers on Greenville were amazing. They’re still the best.

The best in Austin were at Bongo's on 24th. RIP

I don't know enough about the upcoming reviews to comment.. but I can't see any value in the debt accumulation for a LGBTQ+ studies major anywhere but... particularly in College Station..

More info on cuts

Well, first it was aggie board of regents that made the choice. It was 38 programs, didn't find a list. Faculty had no input allegedly.

To me this appears to be aggie state reps using their power to "unwoke" aggie academics.

This is ebbing quickly into CR so I'll just note that I don't see Texas board of regents following the same path as aggie board of regents. Then again, I know shit and I'm apt to go full regard.. so..

I strongly believe that those kind of reviews are needed at basically every university.

As I posted in the higher ed thread,

Removing programs/degrees/certificates is more locally done within that department by faculty long with their dean. You get as much data and information as you can and make a determination. If it’s deemed the program/degree/certificates should be deleted or eliminated, then that’s a process that takes a few years because you have to ensure it won’t impact students who are already in the middle of completing that program/degree/certificate.

BoRs and Presidents/Chancellors do not get involved in curriculum. That is overreach.

And as I’ve posted here before, programs get reviewed on a cycle in higher ed.

A faculty member’s salary is determined by several factors but mostly it’s if you’re tenured, tenure track, or lecturer (for 4-years).

Ha!  My father's salary was determined by the fact that he didn't want to do research.  Tenured Civil Engineering prof, I made more than him (~$43K) my first day out of grad school.  He won dozens of "best teacher" awards over his career, which had exactly zero financial impact.

PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS.

looking at all the affected program etc made me think of an aunt of mine. She hold multiple doctorates and masters in many diverse areas, yet has never made a dime off of any of them as she has never worked a day in her life.

As all of the family was incredibly curious,  a couple of us finally got up the courage to ask why.

Turns out she was born to an impoverished family (which we knew) and was always embarrassed by that along with her early lack of education. What none of us knew until then was that she had an insatiable desire to learn, it's what gave her joy in life. Her husband, a '57 UT graduate understood that and let her pursue her passion...learning. Now despite her advanced age, she can talk with anyone about damned near anything. God Bless her and her millionaire husband, and by the way....all of their degrees are from the University of Texas in Austin.

I would agree, but caveat it that while the degree/major may go away, most of the classes should still be available.   I would think that getting a degree in sociology with a minor or focus on gender studies, would provide better future employment options while still having a focus someone desires.   Now honestly, not sure how great employment is for a sociology degree, but with that it has to be better not to be incredibly limited in what the degree says.

But this is just a Dad who has kids going to college who wants them to find a path to success so they can return home to visit and not need to live with us full time.

MOST folks with Sociology degrees go on to be Surly 1%ers that own their own companies.. well.. maybe some.. okay.. I'm not a Surly 1%er but do own my own company. Leave me alone!

On a serious note, Sociology degree with a deeper dive in Social Media Marketing/Management or polling methodology and funding is better applicable post grad training path.

Tying over into social media/business/politics is a better path than diving deeper into a specific niche unless you're planning on grad school with a potential Thesis around that area of specialization/focus.

All the young Surlyites should be getting into nursing school if they can.  Seriously, though. Become anesthesia APNs and get hired starting at minimum 100/hr.

Chemical Engineering UG

Petroleum Engineering UG

Aerospace Engineering UG

Analysis, Design and Management of Energy Conversion Systems UG

Engineering Concepts UG

Maritime Studies UG

PE major but you can't add a Maritime minor?

I saw the list. In fairness, who minors in petroleum engineering? It had never occurred to me that one would minor in engineering at all.

Yeah I'm with Opus on this one. I admit, I dropped out of EE cause it was boring but I can't see having a minor in second engineering degree. In fact, I would submit broadening horizons by business engagement or something more in a "teams building" would be better. Or, "Getting along better with others for Engineering Majors".

We've completely derailed this thread.

Correct. Engineering is a major. In fact it requires so many classes, that there are barely any discretionary electives, so you generally wouldn’t minor in anything. This is the first I’ve ever heard of engineering minors. Maybe it was some watered down aggy program to allow waterheads to claim they have engineering degrees.
