Where will Texas A&M football turn after losing Husan Longstreet to Lincoln Riley and USC?
The first big recruiting loss for Texas A&M football under Mike Elko has arrived under unexpected circumstances. The 8-2 Aggies are having a great season, showcasing an improved offense and still controlling their own destiny for the SEC championship—and, therefore, the playoff as well.

And yet, now is the time that five-star QB Husan Longstreet out of Corona, CA, chose to flip to the USC Trojans, who currently sit at 5-5 in a very disappointing year. Longstreet had been committed to the Aggies since April, when A&M turned up the heat for the then-four-star.

As I say, the timing here may be the biggest head-scratcher. USC is currently lacking in fan support, flagging in several on-field areas, and Lincoln Riley might just be on the hot seat. In contrast, the Aggies have an arrow firmly pointed up.

The most likely contributor is probably the shifted depth chart for the Aggies. Previously, it seemed that Conner Weigman was the no-doubt starter for the Ags until he headed to the NFL, at which point it would be an open competition. Now, it looks like the younger Marcel Reed has entrenched himself as A&M's starter.

So where do the Aggies look to replace Longstreet? A five-star substitute would be Keelon Russell out of Duncanville, currently committed to Alabama. That is pretty unlikely, though, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Ags put on the full court press if possible.

If not him, then I expect them to take a look at some guys around the state committed to smaller programs like Baylor or TCU. They have a bit of a longer timeline now with Marcel Reed as the guy—and I did like what we saw out of Miles O'Neill last night—but you'd still like to take a guy who's not a total project. There are several of those players out there who are gettable for the Aggies, but they'll have to move fast.

“Smaller programs,” like Baylor and TCU. Both of which have significantly more success this century than TAMU. If they would just accept that they’re Mississippi State, they’d be much happier. But they insist they’re Bama. That’s (one reason) why they’re so unhappy.

Smaller programs?  You mean with a Championship game appearance in the last 4 years by one and a couple of conference titles each THIS century?

Sure… “smaller”

As always is the case. Just don’t know who there are.

Impossible to do except right at the source; i.e., an equivalent speaker array polling their noise and negating it with the out of phase equivalent.

How about the fact that a kid would rather go where a coach is on the "hot seat" then the storied and revered Texas Aggie Fighting Texan Bulldogs? That's the opposite of good bull.

Crazy that moving to SEC is what it took for aggy to finally have a SOS higher than Texas.

I won't even try to dig into Sagarin's algorithm, but he does have ND at #6 whereas Michigan is #36.  Our other noncon opponents are CSU #83, UTSA #82, and ULM #127.  A&M's are McNeese State #177, Bowling Green #91, and New Mexico State #174.

So, their noncon crap is worse than our noncon crap, and by a bigger margin than the best noncon opponents each team played.

They already did that against LSU.

Doing it again seems like overkill, but it’s A&M. I told a friend a few weeks ago, there are several things in our (Texas) favor going into this game, and one of them is just the amount of pressure A&M is putting on themselves to win this game and win it big.

agree overkill, but is it 25th anniversary of the ultimate in aggy tradition stupidity so there is that.

and in their mind with the new playoff the coaster is back to a height it would not have been at normally at this time.  discounting the covid year anomaly it has been over a decade.

If it's the 6:30 kick, we should just drive over in the morning.  I'm sure that's a non-starter, but I'm still pissed at the fiasco those jackasses created.  Major got food poisoning, the hotel mysteriously failed to provide breakfast, a whole bunch of our players were harassed by phone during the night.

And yet our band still went out and set a bar for class those dipshits could never match.

we tried to be cool and respectful even though it was their complete dipshittery that caused it all and they couldn't even take that with grace.  the cult is absolutely real.

After that game, the team started staying further out of town, in places like Brenham, to try and avoid their bullshit.

I mean the Mississippi State team stayed out in Round Rock which with I-35 traffic is probably about the same length of time to drive in despite being lower mileage.

I for one welcome the team staying in Brenham ;-)

Personally, I'd like them to breeze past Auburn this coming weekend.  Increase their overconfidence.  Raise that roller coaster to new heights.   I refuse to be overly confident about this game like I was with UGA, but I have seen aggy choke so many times when they get into games like this, and it always seems they went into each of those games feeling they had "this one, this year" locked down.  Only to be dashed on the rocks again.

Wonder if listeater's kid was in that ticket pull line.
